Our GM probably would have had the Bard get consumed by the ooze or fall in a pit.
The poor player is the newest to the idea of an RPG. He loves music and really wanted to be a bard because of that connection, but he tends to be very quiet in non-combat situations and therefore abdicated the role of face, to the extent he ever wanted it, to me. Which was fine because Del is built for it and I love to do it, but then in combat the player didn't have a great grasp of all the things he could do in a support role, so mostly he ran up to the front to stab things with his rapier, and do very little damage. And then things would hit him, and he would take a beating.

This was much better. My brother had been working him over for a long time to get him to switch, and finally it happened. Good news all around, as I said. He can make a huge difference by running to the front and cutting things up, and he can sit back while I talk to the local head of the Clasp. Win/win.
