That means that readers don't necessarily have to sympathize with the goal, just whoever is trying to complete that goal. I would not have thought that.

Well, that's sort of in the same vein as a villain with motives we can empathize with. We see the goal, but we know he's still evil. Same with someone good unintentionally creating something terrible, like the John Hammond in Jurassic Park.
