Re: The Book of Onslaught (Waiting on Initial)
C3G STANDARD PLAYTEST FEEDBACK FORM
NAME OF THE PLAYTEST UNIT: Onslaught
Army Test
Map: Custom
Units: Onslaught @8 Life, 1200 points, Sentinel x5 (2000) vs Professor X, Sage, Angel (Warren), Jean Grey, Nightcrawler (II), Armor, Jubilee, Beast, Cable, Deadpool, Storm (I) (2000)
Spoiler Alert!
Onslaught led out with the Sentinels, then followed up by storming the X-Men himself. The Sentinels chipped away at a few Mutants, but didn't do a ton of damage themselves. Onslaught, meanwhile, absolutely unleashed on the X-Men, killing their two biggest guns (Cable and Deadpool) in a couple turns. His rolls cooled off a bit after that and the X-Men eventually wore him down, but he definitely felt pretty nasty on offense here.
I do think he could use a hair more Life, but also that he might have stayed alive longer if he had gotten in the mix sooner instead of spending so much time attacking with the Sentinels.
Unit Summary: - Damage Done (Normal Attack): 4 wounds to Deadpool in 2 attacks (destroyed), 2 wounds to Cable in 1 attack (destroyed), 0 wounds to Beast in 1 attack, 3 wounds to Sage in 4 attacks (destroyed)
- Corrupted Mind Link: used for OM management throughout
- Magnetic Onslaught: 14 rolls, 7 successes. 1 wound on Cable, 2 wounds on Deadpool, 3 wounds on Nightcrawler, 1 wound on Sage
- Reality Manipulation X: ignored 6 wounds. Inflicted 2 on Cable, 1 on Angel, 2 on Professor X
- Damage Taken: 1 wound from Deadpool in 2 attacks, 1 wound from Cable in 3 attacks (reduced from 3 by RMX), 2 wounds from Nightcrawler in 5 attacks (reduced from 4 by RMX), 0 wounds from Beast in 2 attacks (reduced from 2 by RMX), 3 wounds from Armor in 3 attacks
Who won? List figures remaining in the winning army (include life remaining for heroes): Nightcrawler with 1 Life, Beast with 3 Life; Armor and Storm at full Life

Units: Onslaught @14 Life, 1200 points, Sentinel x5 (2000) vs Professor X, Sage, Angel (Warren), Jean Grey, Nightcrawler (II), Armor, Jubilee, Beast, Cable, Deadpool, Storm (I) (2000)
Spoiler Alert!
Okay, maybe the first game was kind of a fluke with the lower life, because Onslaught got absolutely demolished in this one. The dice were just generally against him, but still, he dropped pretty hard and fast. Cable and Deadpool claimed height early and Onslaught tried to pull them to low ground and engage them with Sentinels. This worked fine on Cable (who was almost dead anyway), but he couldn't make a second roll to get Deadpool down, and the Sage-boosted Wade really put a hurt on him.
Unit Summary: - Damage Done (Normal Attack): 2 wounds to Cable in 2 attacks (destroyed), 0 wounds to Jean in 1 attack
- Corrupted Mind Link: used for OM management throughout

Units: Onslaught @20 Life, 1200 points, Sentinel x5 (2000) vs Professor X, Sage, Angel (Warren), Jean Grey, Nightcrawler (II), Armor, Jubilee, Beast, Cable, Deadpool, Storm (I) (2000)
Spoiler Alert!
And here's the big win. Same basic strategy for both teams as last time, but Onslaught:
a) focused on Deadpool first instead of Cable first
b) had way better luck on his d20 rolls
b was really the big difference-maker. With his d20 hot, he was able to make the X-Men fight the Sentinels before dealing with him, which worked wonders for his longevity.
Unit Summary: - Damage Done (Normal Attack): 1 wound to Jean in 1 attack (destroyed), 3 wounds to Deadpool in 2 attacks, 2 wounds to Cable in 2 attacks (destroyed), 0 wounds to Storm in 1 attack, 5 wounds to Beast in 2 attacks (destroyed), 2 wounds to Jubilee in 3 attacks (destroyed) (1 blocked by Psychic Defense X), 3 wounds to Armor in 2 attacks (destroyed)
- Corrupted Mind Link: used for OM management throughout
- Magnetic Onslaught: 26 rolls, 18 successes. Inflicted 1 wound on a Sentinel, 3 wounds on Cable, 1 wound on Deadpool, 2 wounds on Nightcrawler, 2 wounds on Storm (destroyed), 1 wound on Sage, 4 wounds on Professor X (destroyed), 2 wounds on Angel, 2 wounds on Jubilee
- Reality Manipulation X: ignored 10 wounds. Inflicted 3 on Deadpool (destroyed), 2 on Storm, 2 on Nightcrawler (destroyed), 2 on Angel (destroyed)
- Damage Taken: 0 wounds from Deadpool in 2 attacks, 2 wounds from Cable in 5 attacks (reduced by 4 by RMX), 0 wounds from Nightcrawler in 3 attacks, 1 wound from Storm in 1 attack, 2 wounds from Beast in 3 attacks (reduced by 4 by RMX), 1 wound from Sage in 3 attacks, 1 wound from Armor in 2 attacks, 2 wounds from Jubilee in 3 special attacks (reduced by 2 by RMX), 0 wounds from Angel in 1 attack

Units: Onslaught @15 Life, 1200 points, Sentinel x5 (2000) vs Star-Lord, Bug, Rocket Raccoon (II), Groot (Baby), Cosmo, Drax (II), Gamora (II), Mantis, Nebula (2000)
Spoiler Alert!
Onslaught dropped pretty fast in this one, but he took Gamora, Rocket and Drax with him, and moved a couple Sentinels up into prime position... the Guardians were able to bypass the Sentinels and go right after Onslaught, thanks largely to the Sentinels not moving up as fast against Mutants. (And Onslaught, despite pretty average d20 rolls overall, missed a couple key ones to get Gamora off his back)
When Onslaught went down, all five Sentinels were still on the field. They actually managed to do well for themselves on the strength of raw stats, and because they managed to luck out and polish off Bug and Nebula pretty quickly. The endgame took a while to play out, but eventually Star-Lord and Mantis polished off the last couple Sentinels.
Unit Summary: - Damage Done (Normal Attack): 4 wounds to Drax in 2 attacks, 2 wounds to Rocket in 2 attacks (destroyed), 1 wound to Gamora in 3 attacks, 0 wounds to Mantis in 1 attack (1 blocked by Psychic Defense X)
- Corrupted Mind Link: used for OM management throughout
- Magnetic Onslaught: 14 rolls, 7 successes. Inflicted 2 wounds on Sentinels, 1 wound on Gamora, 1 wound on Dtax, 1 wound on Bug, 2 wounds on Rocket
- Reality Manipulation X: Ignored 6 wounds. Inflicted 1 on Drax (destroyed), 3 on Gamora (destroyed)
- Damage Taken: 2 wounds from Rocket Raccoon in 2 attacks, 2 wounds from Star-Lord in 1 attack, 7 wounds from Gamora in 5 attacks (reduced by 4 by RMX), 4 wounds from Bug in 2 attacks (reduced by 2 by RMX) (destroyed)
Who won? List figures remaining in the winning army (include life remaining for heroes): Star-Lord with 2 Life, Mantis with 2 Life
THOUGHTS ON THE TESTED UNIT'S COST, BALANCE, & DRAFTABILITY: Initial in progress here. Putting the first game up, I'll fill in the rest over the weekend as I play. Feel pretty good after the first game - he could use a bit more Life, but he's got kind of a monster offense. I'd like to keep the offense intact and just bump the Life up enough until he gets the right "glass cannon" feel relative to his crazy point level.
I have some Mutant and some non-Mutant games planned... might end up playing around with that plan a little to make sure he feels good against Mutant-full and Mutant-less armies, since the Sentinels are inherently a counter-draft. They aren't more offensively effective against mutants, of course, but they can blitz against mutants in a way that feels helpful for Onslaught, since I think he'll mainly want to use them as screens.
EDIT: After three games, I think our sweet spot might be in the mid teens? Definitely lives and dies by the d20 a bit.
