Re: davidlhsl's Battles - Oh, Snap!
Slums of Rio Scenario - This was played during playtest phase. Final product may differ.
David: “We’re slumming it here in Rio, Sports Fans! Trying to get that awful O’Snap out of my head is me, David! Sitting next to me humming that awful tune to pay me back for all the times I’ve teased him is my use-to-be good friend, Bob. Bob, haven’t I suffered enough?”
Bob: “That’ll depend on you, David. It’s great to be here in Rio. It’s a lovely city with lots of elevation changes. Sort of like San Francisco.”
David: “Yeah, but without the Rice-a-Roni! We’re watching a C3G scenario being playtested, and we’ve provided our viewers with a view of the action. This is split into two parts. Sock Puppet, please come in!”
Sock Puppet: “Ready to assist! I’m down in the streets, and I’ve already seen Bruce Banner pass by to take his position in the street next to Ant-Man and two Fire Ant Swarms. Lurking in the city is Black Widow and three squads of crack S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents. Four have taken positions on the high side of the street near an alley, while the rest are deployed down in the lower level.”
Bob: “Yikes! What does S.H.I.E.L.D. want with Bruce Banner, anyway?”
Sock Puppet: “It seems Bruce Banner is searching for two bottles that have his blood samples. There are six possible locations in the city where they might be. Black Widow wants at least one of those bottles to take back with her.”
David: “Why?”
Sock Puppet: “You know what happens when Bruce Banner gets angry, don’t you?”
David: “Yeah, he tells Bob’s wife to fetch him another beer!”
Bob (sings): “O’Snap! O’Snap! I do my little dance!”
David: “Aaaaagh!!! Ok, ok! Bruce turns into the Incredible Hulk, right?”
Sock Puppet: “That’s right! So we’ll see whether Bruce or his green alter-ego can locate the bottles before Black Widow can obtain the goods.”
Bob: “Sounds like an interesting situation, David.”
David: “Thanks, Sock Puppet. Bob, you’re right! This should prove to be fun. Everybody seems to have taken their place, so let’s get the action underway!”
Bob: “And don’t forget our sponsor, David. The other four possible locations contain bottles of Burt’s Beer! It’s the beer you’ll swear is contaminated.”
David: “It’s the beer that goes down like sandpaper!”
Bob: “It’s the beer I live for!”
David: “Ok, let’s go!”
Off-camera announcer: “This special 2-part scenario is brought to you by the good folks at Burt’s Beer. Burt’s Beer: Now with 50% more Bruce Banner blood in every broken bottle!”
Slums of Rio Scenario - Part 1 - First Game
Spoiler Alert!
Round 1
Bob: “SHIELD has the first move, which triggers Black Widow to advance 5 spaces before her side’s first turn begins. She climbs up the stairs, and is near one of the possible bottle locations. Now the SHIELD Agents go. Three Agents on the upper level of the city position themselves to fire at Bruce Banner (or Hulk) if they approach one of the upper-level locations. This city is ripe with Kill Box spots, so Bruce needs to be careful. One of the Agents takes down one of the two Fire Ants (1 left).”
David: “They won’t be able to fire at Ant-Man, because he has Tiny Stealth. Ant-Man is first, and he strikes at Bruce! 1sk vs 1sh is blocked. Hey, you don’t think he’s trying to make Bruce angry, do you?”
Bob: “Makes sense, because Hulk’s Super Leap will allow him to cover the city pretty quickly. Black Widow approaches one of the bottle locations, and the bottle doesn’t contain any blood samples. 5 more locations to search!”
David: “Ant-Man takes another strike at Bruce: 2 sk vs 1sh = 1w (1 left). That did the trick, and now Bruce turns into Hulk!”
Bob: “Three SHIELD Agents spring into action to respond to this threat and open fire with their Kill Box! 4sk vs 3sh = 1w (6 left). That won’t bring on Hulk’s Rage.”
David: “Hulk has the third turn, and he Super Leaps to the roof of one of the lower-level buildings out of harm’s way. He inspects the bottles and fails to locate his blood. Four more locations to go! And with the end of the Round, Hulk returns to Bruce Banner’s form.”
(Error: Hulk should've healed the 1 wound when he changed back to Bruce Banner.)
Round 2
Bob: “Black Widow uses her Espionage ability to climb to the roof of the other building next to where Bruce is. She then takes her turn and inspects the bottles. She finds a blood sample! All she needs to do now is move to the edge of the map, and she’ll escape!”
David: “Yikes! Bruce jumps off the roof and rolls for falling damage: 1 skull = 1w (0 left), and he permanently changes to Hulk form! Can they reach Black Widow in time?”
Bob: “Not yet, because the Agents are next. One moves next to the final Ant and tries to stamp him out, but 1sk vs 1sh is blocked. Two others on the lower part of the city position themselves in the shadows, and they open fire on Hulk. 2sk vs 4sh. 1sk vs 3sh.”
David: “Ant-Man is next. He Mighty Leaps to one of the unchecked bottles and comes up empty.”
Bob: “And it appears Black Widow didn’t expect to find her sample so early, as the SHIELDS get the last turn! Will her team’s Order Marker placement wreck their plans? The Agents at the lower level can’t quite set up the Kill Box, as only two get height. 2sk vs 3sh. 2sk vs 2sh. 3sk vs 1sh = 2w (4 left), and Hulk is in Rage Mode!”
David: “Hulk Super Leaps next to Black Widow and tries to punch her blood sample out of her hands. He gets +3 for the Rage, but -3 for the Super Leap. 3sk vs 2sh+1sh (Close Combat Expert)/2 sk = 0w. Edge of map prevents knockback.”
Round 3
Bob: “SHIELD have initiative on their side in this battle, and Black Widow uses her Espionage move to break away from Hulk. She foolishly considered jumping off the roof the way Bruce did, but that would allow the Blood Sample to pop out of her hand an near Hulk. She wisely moves towards the ladder, then uses her turn to head off the roof. She finds some short drops to jump off to reach the lower level, and she’s one move away from the exit.”
David: “Not if Hulk can stop her first! His Super Strength allows him to drop to the street and engage Black Widow. He gets his full +3 Rage! 4sk vs 1sh+1sh/1sk = 2w +1w for knockback = 3w (2 left). The blood sample squirts out of her hands and lands on the roof above.”
Bob: “Black Widow climbs up the ladder to gain height on Hulk and strikes down, using her Close Combat bonus. It’s a nasty blow: 4sk+1sk! Even with Hulk’s +3 Rage defense, he gets 4sh and takes another wound (3 left).”
David: “Hulk is currently engaged with 3 figures. If he Super Leaps, he’s still vulnerable to engagement strikes from the three figures. He decides to exploit his Rage and take down Black Widow: 5sk vs 2sh+1sh = 2w = KO! Let’s see what would’ve happened if he had broken engagement instead: 1sk. He missed an opportunity.”
Bob: “The two Agents next to Hulk break engagement to attempt a Kill Box, knowing they could be taken down by engagement strikes. Hulk smashes both (7 remaining). Another shakes and fires down. 2sk vs 3sh.”
David: “Hulk considers engaging to maintain his Rage, but remembers the blood sample on the roof. He Super Leaps away and eliminates it.”
Round 4
David: “Hulk soothes.”
Bob: “Even though Black Widow can no longer accomplish her mission, the SHIELD can still win if they take down Hulk’s team before Hulk finds the other sample and escapes. Two fire up at Hulk. 2sk vs 1sh = 1w (2 left). The other decides to hold his fire, as an enraged Hulk will simply be impossible to take down.”
David: “Hulk Super Leaps across the city to the upper level to inspect the bottles. He finds his other blood sample! He destroys it, and he now must escape to any edge unengaged for the win.”
Bob: “The Agents must stop this at all costs! Three engage Hulk to make Leaping very risky, as they can’t quite set up a Kill Box. One has height, and they open fire. 0sk vs 2sh. 3sk vs 1sh = 2w = KO! Hulk has been taken down, and one Agent closes on Ant-Man with Tactical Cover Fire! Now the Agents need to take down Ant-Man.”
(Error: Due to the mistake mentioned earlier, Hulk would still have 1 life remaining. Let's see how the other attack would've happened: 3sk vs 3sh. Hulk would've survived and gotten his Rage Marker.)
David: “Hulk sulks.”
Bob: “The Agents approach Ant-Man. They can’t strike him at Range due to his Tiny Stealth. Ant-Man, on the other hand, needs to take down all 7 remaining Agents by himself to win on his side.”
David: “Again, Hulk loses his turn.”
Round 5
Bob: “Two Agents meet Ant-Man and strike. 2sk vs 2sh. 0sk.”
David: “Ant-Man takes height on one of the Agents and strikes down: 3sk vs 1sh = KO! (6 remaining)”
Bob: “Agents try to close, and one is able to strike: 1sk vs 1sh.”
David: “Ant-Man climbs up the ladder a rung for height and strikes down: 1sk vs 1sh.”
Bob: “Two Agents strike up. 1sk vs 3sh. 2sk vs 2sh. That’s one tough Ant!”
David: “2sk vs 2sh fails to take down an Agent.”
Round 6
Bob: “Agents are not letting go of their initiative streak: 0sk vs 2sh. 1sk vs 3sh.”
David: “The Ant isn’t having any better luck: 2sk vs 2sh.”
Bob: “One Agent is approaching the two, who are wildly swinging at the ladder. 1sk vs 5sh. 2sk vs 2sh. This is going longer than that O’Snap song.”
David: “Don’t remind me! 1sk vs 1sh from Ant-Man.”
Bob: “Now there are 3 Agents on hand to swat at the Ant: 0sk. That was a big help. 3sk vs 4sh! Almost!!! 2sk vs 3sh.”
David: “2sk vs 3sh. It’s going to be a long one, folks.”
Round 700
Bob: “Agents need to call an exterminator. 0sk. Who invited the useless Agent? 2sk vs 4sh. 3sk vs 2sh = KO, and the Agents collapse with exhaustion.”
David: “This half does have a scoring mechanism, as both “players” need to play two games, with each taking turns playing each side. Hulk’s Team, which will call Team Red, scored 25 x 2 points = 50 points for blood samples consumed by Hulk, plus 280 points for destroyed figures. That’s a total of 330 points. Team Blue, which is currently Black Widow, scores 500 points for destroyed figures.”
Bob: “And Teams Red and Blue will swap sides, and they will fight this part again before we can proceed to Part 2. This is because the combined scores will determine which team the winning player selects.”
David: “We haven’t seen this much blood since Macbeth. Don’t go anywhere, we’ll give Part 1 another whirl when we return!”
Battle re-set at Round 4 where Hulk was K.O. too soon, and battle completed.
Spoiler Alert!
Round 4 (corrected)
David: “Hulk soothes.”
Bob: “Even though Black Widow can no longer accomplish her mission, the SHIELD can still win if they take down Hulk’s team before Hulk finds the other sample and escapes. Two fire up at Hulk. 2sk vs 1sh = 1w (3 left).
0sk vs 2sh. 3sk vs 1sh = 2w (1 left). One Agent closes on Ant-Man with Tactical Cover Fire! Final shot at Hulk: 3sk vs 3sh. Hulk is full Rage with 6 wound markers!”
David: “Hulk smashes at the Agent on the ladder. 3sk vs 2sh = KO (6 remaining).”
Bob: “Agents can’t afford to break engagement with Hulk to force him to Soothe. First, Hulk gets the last turn in the round, and he’ll easily force himself into the thick of battle to keep the anger flowing. Second, if they break engagement with Hulk, that’ll free Hulk to reach the edge of the map for the win. One Agent decides to take down Ant-Man and strikes: 2sk vs 1sh = KO! That was easy, but can a 12 dice Hulk go down so easily? One climbs the ladder to get height, while the other nervously stays level and tries to shoot at his ankles. Here goes nothing: 2sk vs 5sh, 2sk vs 5sh. Nope!”
David: “5 sk vs 2sh takes down the guy on the ladder. Puny SHIELD Agent! (5 remaining)”
Round 5
Bob: “At least the Agents hold onto initiative. The sole Agent engaged with Hulk sweats profusely and takes position on the ladder, while two other enter range to fire. The ladder man fires first: 2sk vs 1 sh. That’s the wound they needed, and Hulk is taken down!!!”
David: “That should satisfy the officials, so let’s update the totals. Team Red, which I’ll just change to Team David, scores 50 points for Hulk taking both blood samples, plus 320 points of destroyed figures, for a grand total of 370 points. Team Blue, which is now Team Bob, scores 500 points for destroyed figures.”
Bob: “And with that update out of the way, we’ll set up for the second attempt at Part 1, with Team David and Team Bob switching armies. We’ll be back!”
