This may be a completely useless question, but did you spray the pieces with a sealant after painting? That might help with some of the scraping. I also find that roughing up the surface a little...

Basically, your picture doesn't have a transparent background. Edit it using GIMP or whatever, outline your picture, then cut or copy it....
