Besides the uniformity issue, I guess the way I look at this is that if WOTC just take short cuts and cobble something together using the cheapest means possible and then slap a Heroscape label on...

My guess would be the new bases is to save on cost. I was ok with the D&D figures but this change is disappointing and I'll need time to warm up to this idea. On the other hand, it's just a game...
