UK Scapers (The life and times of RichardD)

All UK residents post here!

Include where you live, where we can buy stuff, and any interesting news to do with HS in the UK!

I live and play in London.
eBay is my tough-love friend.

RichardD May 17th, 2006 01:10 PM

I'm in Sutton Coldfield, on the edge of Birmingham.

Argos was my friend, until I ran out of shelf space for Master Sets at 20 a pop. I've tried Funagain (reliable, but oh so expensive on shipping), and now HouseMouse. I'm still hoping that HasbroUK will get its act together, but everything I know about the games industry tells me it isn't going to happen.

RichardD May 19th, 2006 02:50 PM

OK, after running a demo game at Beer & Pretzels (a games event in Burton Upon Trent where David and I ran four-player Heroscape games for two days straight), I've got the urge to demo it as much as possible to as many people as possible. Question is, when and where? Since I managed to quit Magic about ten years ago I've kind of lost touch with the gaming cons and events. Any suggestions?

Secondly, if you're after a way to potect army cards without that tedious mucking about with laminators, you could do a lot worse than these CD covers:
http://www.mouse2house.co.uk/index.p...94&Template=12

A fiver for 100, delivery included, makes them a bit cheaper than any high street shop (including Maplins). They're wide enough to take a HS army card vertically (some are not), and they are completely clear (rather than the textured matt finish of most polyppropalene sleeves). The only downside is the shiny finish might be a nuisance in some lighting conditions.

RichardD May 24th, 2006 02:02 PM

Is it just me and Euryon then? :(

K/H_Addict May 24th, 2006 02:11 PM

i live and play in the United States (Virginia)...

isn't Euryon supposed to be moving here some time soon?

Jandars_Hope May 28th, 2006 08:59 AM

I'm also for the good old Uk of Europe!
RichardD, how many mastersets do u have exactly?
I recently found some remaining MS's at 20 in woolworths just last week and bought two, now i have 3MS! I couldnt believe it cos i read on some other forum that they were selling out everywhere back in april and thought i'd missed out...but i think i might just be the only heroscaper in Hemel Hempstead!!!

RichardD May 28th, 2006 11:43 AM

I stopped at 4 Master Sets - although I'd not turn up my nose at more terrain, I can't justify spending 20 to get yet MORE Mimrings, Krav Maga etc. I got the first MS at huge expense from a big games fair in Germany 18 months ago, then three more in the great Argos 20 sell-off. Besides, you can build pretty adequate maps with 4 sets :)

I've also got 2 RTFF and 2 Tundras (I like symmetry), though think that a 3rd RTFF might beckon at some point (hexagonal based maps often call for triangular symmetry). 1 of each hero/unique pack, and 2 of almost all of the commons (I've got 3 romans, and 3 drones, but only 1 Monks and 1 Knights - again, I'll rectify that later).

Of course, all that Heroscape doesn't take up THAT much room, but the other 500 or so games do. All the figures (except the large monsters) live in two "Assorter 13 Handy Boxes" bought from Maplin. Useful carry cases as they let me sort everything by unit and faction. I reckon that there's enough space for another two waves before I'll need a third.
http://www.maplin.co.uk/search.aspx?...enu=y&doy=28m5

I know that I can't be the only HS player in Brum - it just feels like it.

Jandars_Hope May 28th, 2006 12:51 PM

My bedroom is jam-packed with other things so i can only make fairly medium sized maps unfortunately! All my packaging is ontop of my wardrobe so thats saves some floor space. I only have 1 of Tundra and 1 of VW, (along with one of each of everything else, except master sets), and i enjoy making symetrical maps (or i'd get moaned at by my brother for making it unfair).
I hope to get more Tundra/VW when (or should i say 'if') they become available over here!
I've pre-ordered Wave 5:Thora's Vengeance from HouseMouseGames and hopefully i can squeeze it in somewhere!!!

Jandars_Hope June 4th, 2006 02:55 PM

I'm going to have to post this before it falls off the map!
Are there no other Uk-Scapers out there?
Come on, join in, tell us about your scaping experiences etc!

robaula June 25th, 2006 04:40 AM

High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire :P

Managed to clear my local Woolworths out of mastersets - 3 of them at 20 a go.
My brother cleared out his local Woolworths in Staines, and there were several sets still left in Woolworths in Aylesbury last time I looked.
An independent shop in my area used to do all sorts of specialised games (lots of obscure foreign stuff too), but they closed down recently
Outside of my family, never found anyone fairly local thats into Heroscape.
Managed to get a few extras off Ebay from USA, but probably like a lot of my fellow Brits out there, bit annoyed about postage charges. Wish I knew someone going on their hols to America so they could bring me back loads of stuff!

robaula June 25th, 2006 04:45 AM

Out of interest, how old are you guys out there? I'm 30 and play it with my two kids, 15 and 12.

RichardD June 25th, 2006 12:40 PM

36.

Yeah, i know all to well about the high p&p and it also crossed my mind about asking someone who's going to america to pick me some stuff up, but i don't know anyone going, plus from what alot of people from the States say on this site is that they can't find what they're looking for in the stores there anyway.
Anyway, I'm 20! and my dads like 45 and he always bugs me about bringing around his place when i go round there!

Jandars_Hope June 30th, 2006 06:04 AM

Is anyone else planning on ordering/or have already pre-ordered wave 5 or the castle set from America?

RichardD June 30th, 2006 08:42 AM

I've indicated an interest in a couple of castle sets. What I actually will end up ordering is two Castes, one of each Thora's unique, and two of each Thora's commons - though if there's just one unique in the set of four, I'll probably just order two full sets. There are also a few bits & bobs I want from earlier waves. In total, probably $150-200-worth. I'll order it all from Sandra at HMG, and in one go, to minimise the shipping charges.

Given that we're a bit spread out, and that Customs & Excise charges can be fiddly, I'm not sure if there would be any merit in trying to put together a "UK 'scapers" group order. What we saved in international shipping, or very own Royal Mail would charge us when it cane to divvying up the huge parcel on arrival. YMMV.

Jandars_Hope July 1st, 2006 02:54 PM

Im not sure whether to get 1 or 2 castle sets but i have already preordered a TV set from HMG! Hopefully we will get some info soon on c a confirmed release date!!!

RichardD July 1st, 2006 04:52 PM

I read your post, and for one moment thought "Panasonic or Sony?"

Jandars_Hope July 2nd, 2006 02:53 PM

:D Happens to the best of us!

[quote="RichardD"]I'll order it all from Sandra at HMG, and in one go, to minimise the shipping charges.[quote]

I've considered ordering from HMG, but afer seeing the postage prices quoted on their ebay shop, I have kind of been put off. Seems over priced to me - I got Wave two from a guy in USA sent to me airmail for only $18, and HMG charges about $32 for the same.

Jandars_Hope July 4th, 2006 04:01 AM

OMG! i can't remember how much i paid...but i think i ordered loads from HMG at once to minimize shipping costs!

robaula July 8th, 2006 10:06 AM

How many master sets have you UKscapers got? I assume that most people out there will only have the basic master sets and a few odd extras (unless you are minted).
I have three master sets, one wave 2 set, two volcarren wasteland sets, and a large selection of assorted extra land pieces.
Havent seen any heroscape stuff in m shops for absolutely ages now... :x

RichardD July 8th, 2006 11:46 AM

4 MS. 2 of Roads and Tundra. 1 of each unique. 2 of *most* commons (I'm missing a couple of duplicates, and have 3 Romans).

robaula July 8th, 2006 12:10 PM

Been thinking about getting the road set for a while... cant decide whether to get tundra first though, or to even wait and get the castle first... hard decisions! :?

RichardD July 8th, 2006 12:25 PM

The usual thinking is that the road is the best of the expansions, although I like Tundra a lot too. Save on shipping and get them all at once :)

robaula July 8th, 2006 12:42 PM

That would be a nice thought... Reckon I may well go for the Tundra first though, as there seems to be a lot more in that set than the others.

Jandars_Hope July 8th, 2006 01:02 PM

I've got 3MS, 1VW, 1TT, 1RTTFF, 1xwave1/1xwave2/1xwave3/1xwave4... and have pre-ordered 1xwave5 and hopefully getting 2xcastlesets!
I also like RTTFF because i like having the trees and bridge! I really wish they sold them over here already because i would love to get at least 2 more TT and RTTFF and maybe 1 more VW!

RichardD July 8th, 2006 02:55 PM

The best option for Roads at a decent price is to order from Germany, I reckon.

Hadnt considered that. How much do you reckon?

RichardD July 8th, 2006 05:41 PM

Post from Germany is more expensive than from within the UK, but less than that from the US. There's no chance of getting stung for the extra approx 30% in import duties (as Germany is within the EU), but the actual expansion might cost a little more than US prices.

Short answer is "I don't know".

Check out someone like www.playme.de

robaula July 8th, 2006 06:17 PM

Thanks, I will check their site out.

robaula July 9th, 2006 04:10 AM

I have been reading through the "travelling base mold" thread, and was wondering if anyone in the UK had gone into base production in a similar way - what do you base your customs on? At the moment I am using Games Workshop bases (bit smaller than Heroscape ones, and although they look quite good once painted and stickered, they are far from perfect)
Has anyone gone that bit further and started molding their own bases?

Jandars_Hope July 9th, 2006 02:18 PM

I'm not into the whole customising thing like alot of people are.

robaula July 10th, 2006 01:13 PM

I used to be into painting GW models when I was a kid, and recently got back into that sort of thing with Heroscape - made four custom units (have you seen my Grimnak Jnr?!) and a load of scenery. I find it quite enjoyable, and reckon it adds a unique touch to my games.

Jandars_Hope July 11th, 2006 05:48 AM

I think customising is ok but i don't have the time (or patience) to do any! I'd mess it up some how.

robaula July 11th, 2006 08:40 AM

Takes patience... I do my nut when it comes to sticking the stickers on the bases bescause I have great trouble taking the backing off of the stickers. Always have to get my wife to do it...

Jandars Hope, why not have a look at my new Heroscape Photo-Story, which is called, "Jandars Hope"?

http://heroscapers.com/community/sho...194&highlight=

Jandars_Hope July 12th, 2006 08:13 AM

WOW! that was awesome...i love turning my battles into some sort of story!
*Jandars Hope will never die!*

robaula July 12th, 2006 04:39 PM

Have any of you guys ever got together to play?

Jandars_Hope July 12th, 2006 05:28 PM

i haven't played heroscape with any one apart from my brother and dad! I think i'd be too scared to go out and find other scapers, plus i think alot of the Uk scapers on here live too far away for me to get to. (Maybe i'm just making excuses...i'm not good around people i don't know), i couldn't just meet up with someone off this site and feel relaxed! I'd be petrified! (Not that i'm saying you're all homocidal maniacs). Plus knowing me, i'm probably playing heroscape all wrong; first i didn't understand the special att/normal att difference, then the height advantage and who knows whatelse i'm doing wrong!

Homicidal Maniac? Me? Only on Saturdays... :x

The way I play Heroscape with my kids is slightly different from the official rules... bet a lot of people adapt it slightly. Doesnt matter though!

(I was only kidding about the maniac thing... I'm alright as long as I take my tablets  )

Good to know! :D *Makes mental note*

Jandars_Hope July 13th, 2006 05:30 AM

By the way, has anyone pre-ordered any of the new sets yet (Thora's or Fortress)? I had pre-ordered Thora's from Housemouse but then they put on a special combo order on there where you can get 1xThora's and 2xFortress for $101.95 plus $49.00 p&p which comes to around 85! so Sandra refunded my money and i pre-ordered the combo! i coulnd't believe how much the P&P was because when i ordered thora's on its own the p&p was about $40! and with the 2xFortress it's only an extra $9! Amazing!

robaula July 13th, 2006 09:01 AM

Sounds like you have got a good deal there... dammit, I'm gonna have to sell off all of my old games to raise some cash for all this Heroscape stuff I want!

RichardD July 13th, 2006 10:40 AM

As to gatherings, I had a 4 Master Set map at Beer & Pretzels back in May, helped by a UK member of the now-defunct HeroscapeHQ forum. There are some pictures up at www.spiritgames.com (or at least there were - for some reason, I can't access the site this afternoon). We ran participation games using pre-selected Master Set armies for most of the weekend, and at the end we had a couple of 4-player 400-point games drafting the armies from my collection. The whole weekend was *very* good fun, and I'll probably repeat it for 2007.

As to HMG and Thora's Vengenace, I know that I want two castles, some odd boosters from the earlier expansions, and at least one full set of TV, probably 2. I'm just waiting to find out which packs in TV are common, and which are unique before hitting the "order" button.

Had a look, reckon that it looked like fun. Tons of different games... couldnt spot Heroscape in the photos though :(

I don't mind about the common/unique factor because i only get one of each set anyway unless it's an terrain expansion, like Volcanic Wasteland/RTTFF/Thaelenk Tundra (although i don't have multiples of these yet i would like to when i get a bit more money).
If by some miracle i actually win the lottery *Please God* then i would buy multiples of Waves, or if they go down to half price (or more) in the UK!

robaula July 16th, 2006 03:46 PM

Lottery... I think if I was to win then me and my kids would probably spend about 2000 on Heroscape stuff... Has anyone any idea how much it would cost (shop price) to get one of each thing that has been released, including the forthcoming TV and Castle?

Jandars_Hope July 17th, 2006 04:27 AM

Do you mean if you brought them all of the internet from the US?
Well...it would be alot. I think i've spent over 400 to get one set of each (including Nerak and Elite Onyx Vipers from Ebay/and TV and 2 Castle sets). But luckily i'm not too hard up for cash!

Do you mind if I call you a lucky bugger? :)

You will have to tell me where you live and when you will be away on holiday so I can "borrow" all of your HS stuff...

(only kidding, by the way)
