Hexscape 3D Heroscape (new thread)

Hexscape 3D Heroscape (using Java)

Note: Since Lyrgard stopped updating his Hexscape thread, I felt the need to put all the new files into one OP. I will maintain all Hexscape updates here and help answer all questions here.

Look at what you can do :
http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/...ps49145df9.png

To be able to play Heroscape on HexScape, you will need :

  1. HexScape program
  2. Heroscape data for HexScape
  3. A map made with VirtualScape
  4. An army file containing your army

1) Getting HexScape

Download HexScape and install it. When it has been installed, open the folder it was installed to, and double click on HexScape.jar to launch it. (You'll need to have Java Installed on your computer for that)

Latest version of Hexscape
HEXSCAPE Install

2) Heroscape data for HexScape

Once you launched HexScape, you still can't play Heroscape with HexScape, because HexScape doesn't come with any game related data. You need to import those first. Here are is file you'll need :

Heroscape figure files (assets) including all classic Master Set figures, Waves 1-10, Expansions, and D1-D3 figures (missing Samuel Brown and Marvel)
Heroscape Classic Assets

Import those files in HexScape (Option button => Asset tab) and you're set !

Eventually we'll want to add VC, HoSS, Marvel, and other superhero figures.

3) Map files

HexScape allow you to load map from .hsc files. You can either download VirtualScape and create your own map, or just use one of the numerous maps in the .hsc already available on the internet.

Here's a link to the VirtualScape files hosted on this site
VirtualScape maps

Here's a good link to Typhon's maps:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/b37nfjfaz...nOYSkZl2g3Ti7a

4) Army File
@DanieLoche created a Hexscape Army builder here:
HexScape Army Builder

You can also create your own. It's just a .txt file with the extension .hsa instead of .txt. The names are a little confusing. There are no spaces, and all start with the prefix classic_

Here is an example army file:
Quote:

My Army

classic_AgentCarr
classic_IzumiSamurai
classic_KravMagaAgents
classic_Mimring
classic_Syvarris
classic_ZettianGuards
classic_Nilfheim
classic_SgtDrakeAlexanderRotV
Also, you can use the HACCS (Heroscape Army Creator) site to support export to HexScape format! Use it to create your army and get the needed .hsa file.

Common Questions

My map doesn't show up in the correct colors.
You must go to options and select Heroscape as the game instead of 3D chess.

My Army won't load
Most likely, one of the names in your Army file is incorrect.

My Army loads, but I get an error on a certain figure
There might be an issue with the 3D model or with the naming in the files. Let me know and I'll check it out.

Where does Hexscape install the assets onto my computer?
Most likely in C:\users\(your name)\.hexscape

What are asset files?
.zip files with the extension changed to .hsd. These contain the card images and they 3D models for the figures.

Do the start zones show up as those fenced areas always? I'd like a way to just have them be dots if possible.
Right now all start zones are fenced areas.

Can I change the table or background colors?
Not in this version of Hexscape.

What are the Camera Modes in Hexscape?
In HexScape, there are 3 camera modes.

1) The "Rotate Around" camera, which is always facing the same point, and can rotate around it. Mouse to rotate, scroll wheel to zoom in or out. It should be the main used camera in HexScape

2) The "Fly By" camera, where you can move the camera freely. up and down arrows make the camera move forward or backward, left and right arrows are for strafing, + and - make the camera go higher or lower, and the mouse change the direction of the camera (like in FPS games, but in 3 dimensions, like you're driving a small plane). This allow to place the camera exactly where you want, to capture an epic scene or see clearly under overhangs or something like that.

3) The "look through the eyes of" that fixes the camera to a point, and only allow to rotate the view. This view is to check lines of sight.

How do I zoom?
I also changed the scroll wheel to zoom in and out instead of + and -.

How do I rotate figures?
To rotate the figures, you need to use "R" and "T" now.

How do I adjust the lighting?
In the game screen, use the "config" menu in the upper left, with a "Light" sub menu. This open a dialog box allowing to toy with the lights (ambient and sun intensity, as well as sun position)

How do I add Order Markers and Wound Markers?
Right click on the army card ICON in your army.

If I'm playing a Solo game with 2 players, how do I add Order Markers to the second army?
Not available in this update of Hexscape as far as I know.

Re: Hexscape 3D Heroscape (new thread)

It is also possible to export HexScape army files from HACCS by adding figures to the army in the right pane and then clicking the Export button.

Also, thanks White Knight and the rest of the HexScape team for all the work you have put into this project!

Thanks for starting a new thread! This should make it a lot easier to find the relevant info for everything.

Re: Hexscape 3D Heroscape (new thread)

I've downloaded the 2.0 version of HexScape and imported the HeroScape Classic Assets file, but whenever I try to load one of the VirtualScape maps the main screen appears blank. Here's a picture of what I'm seeing:

https://i.imgur.com/qbFUAHj.png

It seems like the armies aren't a problem (aside from the figures not being from the currently supported list, but that shouldn't affect the map, especially since this also happens before I've loaded any armies), but all of the map files that I've tried to load when starting games have had this same problem. Perhaps I'm missing something?

Also, I believe that this HACCS thread would be a better link instead of HAC, which seems to be an outdated version.

Is this not the current version of HexScape? This is the one I've been using recently.

I also have a version that looks more like Astro's screenshot, and I can load figures and armies in both.

Neither seems to say which version it is anywhere, though.

Re: Hexscape 3D Heroscape (new thread)

I was originally using the 1.1.3 Beta from the HexScape thread when I first saw the error, but after this thread was posted, I saw that there is a 2.0 version available and uninstalled the previous version to download this one. I'm getting the same error, though, which makes me wonder if I'm missing an asset file somewhere.

I looked through the HeroScape Classic Assets file and saw that it seems to contain all of the figures, but I don't remember seeing data for the terrain. Is that all handled exclusively by the VirtualScape files whenever they're loaded?

The current version of Hexscape (2.0.0-alpha) has the cards on the left side of the screen. The main changes have to do with camera views.

I tried to install 2.0.0-alpha on my home computer but couldn't get it to install correctly. Then I uninstalled the older version of Hexscape and installed 2.0.0-alpha and it worked fine.

There is a naming issue with the Axegrinders, and Raelin SotM has an issue--so I'll be posting an update. I can also post how to fix it manually without reinstalling assets.

The terrain tiles are only .bmp picture files. There are 3D objects for the rock outcroppings, trees, etc...

Maybe it's because you're using an Apple computer? It works fine on my home computer (windows 8) and my work computer (windows 7). This is really a @Lyrgard question.

I got excited when I saw that it was in Java, since I thought there might actually be a HeroScape program that I can use for once.

Maybe it is just my Mac. I was under the impression that Java transitions between platforms much nicer than many other languages, but that of course also depends on the code itself, which I doubt anyone besides Lyrgard really knows. I'll ask @Leo Ultra to try installing the program to his PC to see if it functions there.

Can you use VirtualScape on your mac?

The maps are in VirtualScape format, so that might have something to do with it.

I don't believe that there is a Mac version of VirtualScape at all, so that could very well be it. It's unfortunate if so, because the rest of HexScape itself looks to be compatible. :(

Nice! This would have saved me a ton of time in my learning to use Hexscape 2.0.... a few of my burning questions are answered.
@White Knight or anyone else that feels like trying: I’m fairly certain I’ve downloaded and imported all assets (twice now, actually.) I’m getting errors trying to load some figures, I believe each error states something like “Missing Card for unit”

Happens for:
-Marro Stingers
-Fen Hydra
-Phantom Knights
-(I think Eltahale?)

Can anyone else put those into an army and get them to load on hexscape?

-(I think Eltahale?)

The Marro Stingers have a mistake. The rest of them load for me.

Fixing the Stingers Manually
Go to the .hexscape directory where it stores the assets
(usually c:\users\(your name)\.hexscape

Go to the \asset\heroscape\cards\classic_MarroStingers subdirectory

Open the card.properties file (in Notepad or Wordpad or some other text editor)

Change 3dFigures=MarroStinger1, MarroStinger2, MarroStinger3 to:
3dFigures=MarroStinger1, MarroStinger1, MarroStinger1
(change the 2 and 3 to 1s)

Save and close the file (do not save with .txt extension)

Reason for change: We've only scanned 1 Marro Warrior figure so far.

Troubleshooting Fen Hydra and Phantom Knights (Method 1)
Go to the .hexscape directory where it stores the assets
(usually c:\users\(your name)\.hexscape

Go to the \asset\heroscape\cards subdirectory

Manually delete the folders for the Fen Hydra and Phantom Knights

Go to the .hexscape directory where it stores the assets
(usually c:\users\(your name)\.hexscape

Go to the \asset\heroscape\3dObjects subdirectory

Manually delete the folders for the Fen Hydra and Phantom Knights

Reinstall the assets using the new combined assets file

Troubleshooting Fen Hydra and Phantom Knights (Method 2)
Go to the .hexscape directory where it stores the assets
(usually c:\users\(your name)\.hexscape

Go to the \asset\heroscape\cards\classic_FenHydra subdirectory

Open the card.properties file (in Notepad or Wordpad or some other text editor)

It should read:
name=Fen Hydra
3dFigures=FenHydra

Go to the .hexscape directory where it stores the assets
(usually c:\users\(your name)\.hexscape

Go to the \asset\heroscape\3dObjects\FenHydra subdirectory
(if the FenHydra directory is misnamed, that could be an issue)

Verify that there are 3 files in the folder (.mtl, .obj, and .png) and that the .obj file is named FenHydra.obj (with the creation date of 8/8/2014)

Fixing Raelin
The way Hexscape reads objects is in this order:
The Army.hsa file calls out the card: classic_FenHydra
Hexscape goes to the classic_FenHydra folder and looks at the card.properties file for all figures listed in the 3dFigures line (pulling in one figure for each one listed)
Hexscape goes to the 3dObjects folder and looks for a folder with the same name as called out on the 3dFigures line
Hexscape opens that folder and then opens the 3D .obj model that matches the named called out on the 3dFigures line

RaelinSotM has an issue because the card.properties calls out the file:
3dFigures=RaelintheKyrieWarriorSotM

But the .obj file is called RaelinTheKyrieWarriorSotM.obj
(it's subtle, but the T in the is capitalized in the .obj file)

To fix Raelin, you have to
1) in the cards directory, change her folder to RaelintheKyrieWarriorSotM
2) in the card.properties file, change to
3dFigures=RaelinTheKyrieWarriorSotM
3)in the 3dObject folder, change the folder name to RaelinTheKyrieWarriorSotM

If you try the troubleshooting steps and still have an issue, let me know.

Re: Hexscape 3D Heroscape (new thread)

@White Knight you are a savage tech savvy scaper for sure! Thank you so much for the detailed help.

Neither of the stinger or PK/Fen suggestions worked, but after digging through my user .hexscape directory, I realized I had NONE of the DND or SOTM unit/card sub-directories for some reason. I tried importing one more time, but nothing changed. I decided to rename my .hexscape directory to .hexscape.old, and took your combined 280 MB asset file, and imported it into my now fresh .hexscape folder.

Tried your stinger fix again, and it worked.

However, I was still getting an error for ANY DND units (greenscales, warforged, etc.) I started digging, and I found all of my hydra, PK, greenscale assets exactly as you stated that they should have been. I pulled up the error and took a snip of it, and I finally realized that it was failing because of the army file I was using! For some reason, all DND units were labeled "dnd_FenHydra" or dnd_PhantomKnights" in the (.hsa? .hsc?) files that I was using to load the armies into the game! I opened those in notepad and changed dnd to classic, and seems everything is gravy now.

Can't add more to your rep, but I appreciate the help!

Re: Hexscape 3D Heroscape (new thread)

@superfrog asked:
Quote:

How do we get VC figures added? If we could implement an Art step in the C3V where we got enough photos to make serviceable 3D models, that would be cool. Not sure how much work it would be, though.
Here are the steps for adding a figure to Hexscape
1) Obtain a 3D scan of a figure.
2) Import that scan into Blender, clean it up, reduce the resolution so that it loads quicker in Hexscape, and add a clean base (this can be quick or take a while depending on the quality of the scan).
3) Export that cleaned up figure as an .obj file. (There is a procedure for this, and when you do several at once it can be done in less than 5 minutes.)
4) Make the card picture and icon picture.
5) Make the card.properties text file.
6) Zip it all into an asset file.

For scanning the classic figures we used 123D catch and Remake from Autodesk. Unfortunately both of those free programs were discontinued in favor of their higher end software. More unfortunately, it wasn't a stand-alone program but required uploading files to their website, so they are unusable now.

I've heard that 3DF Zephyr can do the same thing, but I haven't tried it yet. I'll try to do a test run over the next few weeks and see how it works.

I DO have some of the VC figures scanned already (thanks to Xorlaf):
Captain John Varan
Cather Spearmen
Command Courier
Count Raymond
Deathstrike Thrall
Eilan Sidhe
Kursus
Marro Gnid
Nhah Scirh Cultist
Quahon
Skeleton of
Skull Demon
Soldier
Tomoe Gozen
Van Nessing
Varkaanan Darkblade
Varkaanan Quickblade
Zettian Deathwing
Zogross
Zombie Hulk

If I can get 3DF Zephyr working, I'll post how to take the pictures and consider adding the C3V figures. (And HoSS, and Marvel). But I'd like some help as well, at least with the non-modelling stuff.

Is there a list of figures somewhere that need to be 3D scanned? I have free access to a 3D scanner and help using it at my college. I'd be more than willing to help! :)

Also, is there a thread anywhere of higher quality 3D scans?

I am similarly willing to help if it means that we can finally have an online VC resource like this.

Unfortunately, it looks like there's a large overlap between the current completed list and my VC colllection. Here's the list of what I have that doesn't match yours:
Spoiler Alert!

I have two types files: the low-res Hexscape .obj files (with color texture) and higher resolution .stl files with no color texture.
The .stl files can be found here

Note: at the bottom of that OP are two links to additional raw scans from 123D Catch, including some of the VC files.

Does your 3D scanner include the color textures? It would be great if you can scan a figure and link to the file. I'll take a look at it and make sure we can use it in Hexscape.

I will put together a new list of figures, including the VC figures.

I tried out 3DF Zephyr and it seems to work pretty well. I'll write up instructions for how to take pictures of figures. Then we'll try it out.

I'd love to get all the VC figures into Hexscape.

Sorry for the late response, I've been super busy! I emailed the people in charge of the scanner and they said it does scan in color. They said it may not be super good, but the current textures aren't super good either right now haha. Once I get the chance I'll scan in something and link to the file. I think I remember seeing that we are missing 2 sculpts for Marro Stingers, so I'll probably do those.

I think I remember seeing that we are missing 2 sculpts for Marro Stingers, so I'll probably do those.

Any figure you can do will be good for a test.

Dissonance has already scanned several of the missing classic squad members for his Tabletop simulator. The mesh files need to be saved as .obj files (right click on link and "save link as").

Is a 3d scanner required or are there other means to generate a 3d scan?

All you need is a camera.

Basic Instructions for Capturing an Image
1) Place the figure on a flat table with some sort of background underneath (a map, or a picture, or newspaper print). You don't want something with colors that match the figure--you want the figure to stand out clearly. Sometimes I'll try two or three different backgrounds to see which produces the best scan. I have a bluish map of Valhalla and a brown map of Valhalla that I normally use.

2) Set up diffuse bright lighting around the figure. Shiny spots on the figure mess up the rendering. Shadows on the figure mess up the rendering.

3) Set the aperture of the camera to the deepest depth of field (I used f/22)

4) Set the focus to a fixed value

5) Take about 50 pictures as you move around the figure 360 degrees, keeping the figure in the center and focused. You can use two or three different heights, but I usually use a single height. You can keep the camera fixed and rotate the figure instead, but you must rotate the background as well. Do not take more than 50 photos because the free version of 3DF Zephyr only accepts 50.

6) Upload the pictures and provide a link. If want you want process the scan yourself, download 3DF Zephyr free version and import your pictures.

About my setup
I have a turntable attached to a motor. The camera and the motor are both hooked up to a microcontroller. By pressing a start button, it automatically rotates the figure and takes 40 pictures. That way I can put the figure onto the turntable, start the capture, and walk away and do something else.

Camera settings:
Field of view 22

Custom Controller Board

Note that I've switched to lighter, less "busy" background for most of my scans. Maps work well, especially pastel colored maps.

You don't need a fancy setup. Just put the figure on a magazine on a table and move around it taking about 40-50 pictures. Kinseth used his cell phone.

OP updated. Thanks!

@White Knight , THANKS for consolidating and organizing all this material!

I recently experienced some computer troubles that resulted in my Dropbox breaking. So if any of you clicked on the link above (to my Dropbox folder containing the .HSC files for many of my maps), you may have seen only an empty folder.

The problem has been solved, however! They're all back. :D

I have also added the .HSC files to another four of my maps: to Hoarfrost, and to the Vulcan trilogy (Vulcan's Anvil, Vulcan's Cross, and Vulcan's Hammer).

I would also like to know about the servers. I can't seem to get it to connect to the server. How does one create their own server?

So is this incompatible with Apple due to VirtualScape?

Looks pretty cool to use but I have an Apple computer and the previous comments make it seem like it may only work with Windows.

I've no idea--I didn't do the programming. But if you try it, let us know if it works.

Re: Hexscape 3D Heroscape (new thread)

It should work.
If I'm correct, HexScape uses Java.

It is not based on VirtualScape, it only understands Virtualscape file format to open maps, but as long as you have some maps from virtualscape, you don't need the software to open them with HexScape. ;)

Have you tried to download and install the server file?

You can find it here:

If that doesn't work, I can do research on how to set up your own server. The original programmer said that it's easy.

If you would be so kind. I downloaded the server2.0.0 file and i tried opening with Java. Didn't seem to do much.

I'd love to be able to play this with my buddies seeing as in person scape is kinda impossible right now :(

This appears to be the problem:

It's trying to use an ip address already allocated on your system. I'm opening up the files right now to take a look. Do you know if the original programmer has the source files? If not, I can try to decompile them.

Re: Hexscape 3D Heroscape (new thread)

Has anyone been able to get this running on a Mac? I've been working and am unable to get it to work, but someone in the previous thread said they were able to. When I try to start a game from a .hsc file, all I get is what looks like a 360 degree image of clouds or something, but no heroscape tiles. However, if I load the .hsc file in the hexagonal chess configuration, the tiles will load in without textures or the special terrain parts. It also doesn't seem like installing the .jar creates any "asset" folder anywhere on my computer that I'm able to access.
