Re: The Book of Black Canary (II) (Design Phase)
NAME = BLACK CANARY
SECRET IDENTITY = DINAH LANCE SPECIES = METAHUMAN UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO CLASS = PROTEGE PERSONALITY = REBELLIOUS SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 4 LIFE = 4 MOVE = 6 RANGE = 1 ATTACK = 4 DEFENSE = 4 POINTS = 160 CANARY CRY SPECIAL ATTACK Range Special. Attack 4. Choose 3 spaces in a straight line from Black Canary. All figures on the chosen spaces, and all figures other than Black Canary within 1 space of the chosen spaces, are affected by this special attack. Roll 4 attack dice once for all affected figures. Each figure rolls defense dice separately. Symbiotes roll 1 fewer defense die against this special attack. MIXED MARTIAL ARTS After rolling attack dice for a normal attack against an adjacent figure, if no blanks were rolled, you may choose one of the following: • add one automatic skull to whatever was rolled. • before defense dice are rolled, switch Black Canary and the defending figure. They will not take leaving engagement attacks. • after attacking, you may attack one additional time, rolling 2 fewer attack dice. SONIC SHATTER 3 Instead of attacking with Black Canary, you may roll 3 unblockable attack dice against a destructible object within 3 clear sight spaces. |

Re: The Book of Black Canary (II) (Design Phase)
Okay, so, Black Canary II! This is supposed to represent "young Dinah," just starting off her career, trained by Wildcat and mentored by her mom. This is a version that never really appeared in the comics - she's more of a flashback character. But this also will let her work with the JSA in general, the way modern, mature Black Canary does.
I have her personality as Rebellious but can take other suggestions. I currently have the version of Black Canary coming out in April as our choice here. There's surprisingly few good choices for her! This one is based on the cartoon: https://i.imgur.com/gc82yQL.jpg As an alternative, there's a recent OP kit version: https://i.imgur.com/aHzzdlH.jpg I kind of like that one better, but it's more expensive, and I haven't even seen it for sale alone - only with the other two, for like ~$15. But it's also very new, so if the price drops/availability goes up, I'll probably switch to this one. |
Re: The Book of Black Canary (II) (Design Phase)
Wow this will be a controversial design!
Anyhoo is canary cry right off the original? MMA looks good. Quite a potent power but I like the grappling aspect in there. My only concern is that I’d like to see all options get use. If one option is never used in testing maybe we should adjust. But I could see utility on all cases so not too worried. |
Re: The Book of Black Canary (II) (Design Phase)
What happens if say she attacks from low ground and rolls no blanks and switches position so she now has high ground? Does she now roll an additional die for height advantage?

Re: The Book of Black Canary (II) (Design Phase)
Direction looks solid. No ideas for personality, unfortunately.

I'm hoping we can pin down 160 as a cost here, so I'm definitely happy to tweak the exact pips on MMA. Those were just the ones in discussion at the time, and I think they work pretty well with the theme. My knowledge of MMA is that three things happen: you grapple with people, you punch them over and over again, you hit them really hard in the head. So those are my three pips. And yeah, Canary Cry is off the original. Don't mind toning it down a bit (or up, in theory) if it's too attractive as an option. |
Re: The Book of Black Canary (II) (Design Phase)
Probably something that should be FAQed just for clarity's sake then. To head off arguments and pre-settle rules lawyering on it.

Re: The Book of Black Canary (II) (Design Phase)
I agree with LP, the auto-skull and bonus attack are significantly better then switching places 9 times out of 10. I kind of feel with this being an early (ie. inexperienced) take on the character, combined with what little I know of MMA fights, that her combat should maybe be a little more chaotic in nature. Like she rolls with the punches and goes where the fight takes her rather then dictating the flow of combat. As such how would you feel about a take where the bonus activity is determined by the die roll instead of picked.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS When attacking an adjacent figure with a normal attack, after rolling attack dice and before defense dice are rolled, do the following: - if a single blank was rolled, switch Black Canary and the defending figure; - if two or more blanks were rolled, add one automatic skull to whatever was rolled; - if three or more skulls were rolled, attack one additional time. Figures moved with Mixed Martial Arts will not take leaving engagement attacks. |
Re: The Book of Black Canary (II) (Design Phase)
In general I like the simplicity of just having a single trigger, even if there's a power imbalance. But I don't hate that idea - getting effects at random and using Wildcat to sort of point her in the right direction. Might change the specific triggers, but it would be interesting - definitely the sort of power I find fun. How do other feel on that?
