Character Bio - “Following [Bruce Wayne retiring after an encounter with Bane, then Jean Paul Valley going insane while filling the role of Batman and being deposed by a partially healed Bruce], Dick Grayson takes up the mantle of Batman while Bruce was recovering from a broken back as he considers Dick his prodigal son. After the events of "Batman R.I.P." and Final Crisis, Dick moves operations to Gotham to protect the city following Bruce's apparent death. Despite Bruce's will instructing him not to, the chaos in Gotham following Bruce's disappearance prompts Dick to take up his mentor's identity once again as Batman.” (Wikipedia 2013).

-Rulings and Clarifications-
  • Q: Can Batman carry an Equipment Glyph in addition to (or in place of 1) Utility Equipment Glyph?
  • A: No. Batman can either equip: Up to 2 Utility Equipment Glyphs OR 1 normal Equipment Glyph. In order to pick up a single normal Equipment Glyph he must first drop all Utility Equipment Glyphs.
  • Q: Does Strategic Discipline prevent Order Markers from being moved even after Batman is destroyed?
  • A: Yes, up to the remainder of the round. This power uses similar wording to other powers that state "remainder of the game" which continue for the remainder of the game even after that figure is destroyed.
  • Q: Can the player controlling Batman choose to not use Strategic Discipline?
  • A: No, this power is mandatory and will prevent the movement of Order Markers both for the benefit of the player and to his detriment.

NAME = BATMAN
SECRET IDENTITY = DICK GRAYSON

SPECIES = HUMAN
UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO
CLASS = VIGILANTE
PERSONALITY = DETERMINED

SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5

LIFE = 4

MOVE = 6
RANGE = 1
ATTACK = 5
DEFENSE = 5

POINTS = 170

UTILITY BELT 2
At the start of the game, after Order Markers are placed and before initiative is rolled, you may place up to two Utility Equipment Glyphs of different types on this card. Batman can equip a Utility Equipment Glyph even if there are other Utility Equipment Glyphs on this card, up to a maximum of 2. Batman cannot lose these glyphs by receiving wounds unless he is destroyed.

STRATEGIC DISCIPLINE
At the start of the round, before initiative is rolled, if one or more Order Markers are placed on this card, for the remainder of the round no unrevealed Order Markers on cards you control may be moved to any other cards.

ACROBATIC MOVEMENT
Batman never takes falling damage and is never attacked when leaving an engagement. After rolling attack dice for a normal attack or after rolling defense dice, for each shield rolled you may immediately move Batman one space up to 6 levels up or down.

Strategic Discipline is a cool power, but fairly niche (Obvious Joker counter, however!). Everything else looks good! :) I don't know anything about his time as Bats, so I can't comment on theme.

Was he using Acrobatics as Batman? Seems sort of unwieldy with the cape and all.

Looks fine overall, though.

Re: The Book of Batman (Dick Grayson) - Design Phase

Yeah, I was going with the theme that he's very much a leader type and he always has a plan.

Really, I had room for a third power to help differentiate him more from Nightwing and Batman (Bruce Wayne) (II). I toyed with Tactician (but didn't like the idea of it stacking with other such boosts) or a power that boosted move numbers (but didn't like the thought of it working with Archangel or Human Torch, etc., in annoying ways. So I figured if I was going to be metagame conscience, might as well take an opportunity to provide a counterdraft for a couple of the figures I've read complaints about - Joker and Mad Thinker (and their combo especially).

If you put the marker on him that way, it also prevents you from using someone like Cyclops or Commander Rogers or Sage to do funny things during that round (and I'm OK with that). :-P

If we wanted to make the power 150% as useful, we could make it so your OMs can't be moved to any other cards and thus make him an Ozy counterdraft as well. I'm OK either way. The third power is meant to be just a little extra flare. The other two are his meat and potatoes. :-)

Valid question ... he did still have a cape (albeit shorter) as Robin, though, and he's still a world class Acrobat regardless. :shrug:

I also dig it as a bridge power with his other versions, and that on most maps it frees him up to use his Utility Belt for other things than the Bat-Grapple.

Potential background (needs a slightly lighter feel than Bruce Bats)

If folks think the Acrobatic Mastery is a bad fit here, I could see going with an oldie but goodie like Stealth Dodge.

Looks good. I got nothing to add, I'm fine with Acrobatic Mastery. I'm fine with Strategic Discipline as is or so they can't be moved to any other cards.

Cool stuff, like the metagame thinking here, that's part of Commander Rogers' thinking too, to help as a counter to OM movers that people may gripe about. Now there will be a couple direct counter drafts to keep people happy.

That said, what's to stop the "gamey" player from placing an OM on this card temporarily before rolling for initiative and then moving it elsewhere? They can say, "Well it was placed there before rolling for initiative. Nothing says I have to keep it there." Now while that's not the intent, and I'd have to kick that dude's ass for pulling something like that, there shouldn't even be that remote chance of someone trying that rules lawyer taking it as written and not with the intent in mind.

Maybe I'm just gun shy, or crazy dumbass player shy, and we don't need to change anything. But it was just something I saw that some jerk might try to exploit. But .... the other player has to be smart enough not to let that happen as well.

Otherwise, dig the power set.

Does this Batman talk in a deep whispery angry voice too, or does he talk like he did when he was Robin?

Re: The Book of Batman (Dick Grayson) - Design Phase

I don't think it's required because once you place an OM on the card it can't be moved until it is revealed. ;).
