_________________________________________________________________
Character Bio - "Obsidian is the codename of Todd Rice, who is the biological son of Alan Scott and Rose Canton, respectively the Golden Age superhero Green Lantern and villain Thorn. Todd was raised in an abusive adoptive home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He finds out in his late teens that he has a twin sister, Jennie-Lynn Hayden, alias Jade [….] As Obsidian and Jade, they were founding members of the superhero team Infinity, Inc, a group composed mainly of the children, grandchildren, and protégés of members of the Justice Society of America. Obsidian also serves with the Justice League in a space-station based headquarters [….]

"Obsidian apparently inherited a potential for mental illness from his mother, Thorn. Corrupted by Ian Karkull, Obsidian turns evil, using his shadow powers to first steal all shadows from an entire city, then to spread darkness over the entire world [….] After being cured, Obsidan retires. It was during this time that Todd came out and came to terms with his self-identity as a gay man. He has since then returned to being a superhero and is still dating happily." (Wikipedia, 2013).

NAME = OBSIDIAN
SECRET IDENTITY = TODD RICE

SPECIES = METAHUMAN
UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO
CLASS = RECLUSE
PERSONALITY = BROODING

SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5

LIFE = 6

MOVE = 6
RANGE = 3
ATTACK = 5
DEFENSE = 5

POINTS = 280

SHADOWLANDS PASSAGE
Start the game with 3 shadow tiles on this card. Before moving Obsidian, you may choose an empty land space within 10 spaces of Obsidian and place a shadow tile from his Army Card onto the space if the shadow tile fits normally onto that space. Instead of moving normally with Obsidian, you may place him on any shadow space within 10 spaces.

INTANGIBILITY
Obsidian can move through all figures, Fortress Walls, and obstacles, and is never attacked when leaving an engagement. Obsidian cannot be targeted by opponents' non-adjacent figures for any attacks or for any opponents' special powers that require clear sight.

ENVELOPED IN SHADOWS
All figures adjacent to Obsidian are considered Enveloped. Enveloped figures cannot be targeted by non-adjacent figures for any attacks and are not in clear sight of any figures. At the end of each round, roll one unblockable attack die against each figure Enveloped by Obsidian.

SUPER STRENGTH
FLYING

This must be after he goes insane and tries to kill everyone?

I have no idea who this guy is. Interesting powers.

Enveloped figures can move before the end of the round to avoid the wound, but of course they'd have to have an OM or someone else to help them move.

Kind of weird with having Intangibility and being able to take LE wounds from Sensory Assault figures. And with intangibility, he's only going to roll 1 less defense die vs. adjacent attacks from Sensory Assault figures. So I guess since he can't be targeted for their Sensory Assault bonus vs. non-adjacent attacks, the -1 helps offset that somewhat.

Aura of Darkness feels odd overall... that power seems very specific to the Cloak and Dagger team synergy-wise. Are there any better options for that one?

Yeah, didn't think about that interaction. That's confusing and annoying.

Not necessarily. Even after that, he's a bit unstable at times.

Yeah, given what Hahma's post made me realize and your post, I'm thinking scrap Aura of Darkness.

Any thoughts on a third power, or should we just go two here?

Re: The Book of Obsidian - Design Phase

I'd like to see some sort of interaction with shadow tiles... or maybe something to reflect his light weakness (by rolling fewer dice against Sensory Assault figures).

But if so a lighter touch - I think his powers are solid as is.

Re: The Book of Obsidian - Design Phase

We chatted about this guy among others with Scapemage. We decided to make enveloped "adjacent to only one figure" rather than just enemy figures and change Crime Fighter to Recluse.

Good call. I remember liking those changes. :up:

I'll make some notes in the SP.

johnny - I like the idea of him interacting with Shadow Tiles somehow, and I like the idea of a light touch. Any thoughts?

Roll an additional unblockable attack die if either Obsidian or the enveloped figure is on a shadow tile?

Re: The Book of Obsidian - Design Phase

I could see something like Shadow Ambush from Classic.

SHADOW AMBUSH
If Mika Connour starts her turn unengaged and on a shadow space, add 3 to her attack this turn.

Maybe lower it to 2 or something.

Re: The Book of Obsidian - Design Phase

Or you could do the defensive shadow bonus like so:

AURA OF DARKNESS
Obsidian and any figures within 2 spaces of Obsidian never take leaving engagement attacks except from figures with the Sensory Assault special power and roll one additional defense die against normal attacks from figures without the Sensory Assault special power.
