Character Bio - The self-proclaimed "Monarch of Planet X," Groot came to Earth in the 1960s seeking humans for study. However, he was defeated, and for decades afterwards his whereabouts were largely unknown. However, at some point the titanic creature ended up in Kree Space, where he was captured as an outlaw, and locked away - that is, until the Phalanx came. When a team was needed for a suicide mission, Groot was one of the prisoners conscripted to go behind enemy lines under the command of Peter Quill.

However, when all was said and done, Groot survived the mission, and those that remained formed a new team - the Guardians of the Galaxy!

Before moving Groot:

• If there are 3 or fewer Wound Markers on this card, you may choose up to two unengaged friendly tiny or small figures or one unengaged friendly medium or large figure.

Cool. I like the similarity to Swamp Thing. He's definitely a slow moving pod's dream piece, though. I know he's not as mobile as Swamp Thing, but he's tougher to kill and that carry power should have a lot of weight. I think he's probably around 50 points too low right now. It won't show up in heavy hitters (where his lack of mobility will kill him) but it should in army tests where he can carry around a ranged threat or two.

I like it! No issues here for me. He'll definitely need to be tested as pod-carrier, but given that John Stewart will still be far better for that role, I don't see him having a major effect on the metagame. Though I can see him playing a nice role in a Puppet Master pod, as he can help move your support units into place and then act as an offensive threat if your opponent moves in. I doubt it will be that strong though, just a fun combo. He will also LOVE Mastermind!

Re: The Book of Groot (Design Phase)

Yep, Puppet Master and Mastermind were the first two I thought of as well. He definitely won't be at the same level as John Stewart when it comes to usefulness as a pod carrier, but the thought of him being 140 points less (ironically, Puppet Master's cost) does scare me a bit!

Also, key point, John's restricted to carrying non-flyers, which Groot isn't restricted to doing.

Re: The Book of Groot (Design Phase)

Sure, but the majority of support figures and snipers (the units best served by being carried) are non-flying. Also, Groot is limited to 2 adjacent figures, while John can carry 3 figure that start within 2 spaces. John is also more than twice as fast (4 non-flying spaces as opposed to 8 flying spaces!) and Groot lacks the ability to defend the figures he is carrying, while John has the very strong Shield Strike ability.

Re: The Book of Groot (Design Phase)

Yeah, I don't see him making TOO much of a splash metagame-wise... he's just too slow. I think in most situations it'd be better to move one unit 5-6 spaces and then attack than move two of them a paltry 4. And of course one big hit can knock him down to a basic Carry.

But pricing is definitely a concern. I expect he'll be in the same range as Swamp Thing, which is where he belongs power-level-wise for sure.

Re: The Book of Groot (Design Phase)

For sure. I'm not saying to change the powers or make him 300 points or anything. :-) Just that I think 230-250 is a more likely range for what he'll be worth in Army Tests.

I'd like to tone done this some:

Quote:

ORGANIC REGENERATION
After moving with Groot, if he is on a water space, remove one Wound Marker from this card. At the end of the round, remove one Wound Marker this card.
I think with high Life, high Defense, and a high Healing Factor, he's going to be super tough to take down. Maybe too tough. I think a slight modification will make him less annoying to play against:

Quote:

ORGANIC REGENERATION
At the end of each round, remove one Wound Marker this card. If he is on a water space, remove an additional Wound Marker from this card.
