Who is the best Gencon Main Event Player?

I decided to play around a little with the results I have from the last 4 years Gencon's and see if I could create a system to rank all of the players that made it to day 2 of the main event. Here is what I came up with.

Scoring.....some challenges here because there used to be only the top 8 make the second day, but there also used to be less people in the event also. You could go a lot of directions with this...here is what I decided.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...mi/Scoring.jpg

With this scoring each person is listed below. With the top 3 being Spider Poison, MattsterTruckRally, & R˙chean. Day 1 wins only includes years when a player advanced to the second day. I would include all day 1 wins, but I have no way to get that information. This list is sorted by points and then day 2 wins to resolve ties. If there is still a tie, day 1 wins is used to resolve. Here are the results...

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...ermi/cumul.jpg

Not being completely satisfied with this since many people can't attend Gencon every year, I put in the number of years attended and divided the points by this number to give an average number of points per event attended. My apologies if I didn't get the number of years you participated correct. I think that I have most of them right. This gives a different result, helping people who haven't attended every year and showing how well you did the years that you did attend. Matthias moves up to the third spot with this weighted method reflecting that he has only been in the main event once. This different methodolgy put the top 4 as Mattster, Lonewolf, Matthias, and Spider Poison.

Interesting - nice work lonewolf! The results are about as expected - The top players over the years definitely seem to be spider_poison, MattserTruckRally and yourself.

Of course, we both know why Mattser won it this year. The only two players that beat him last year weren't there!! ..... ;)

Exactly!

Don't forget that I am 2-0 against Hendal, the runner up!

Nice work Lonewolf!

You may want to consider utilizing a minimum # of years attended requirement in your weighted results. Something like two years, at least, before you can get an accurate reflection of performance. Otherwise, someone may have a 'break-out' year and their score would be high because it's divided by only One.

Just a thought. I'm sure the stats guys will be here soon to enlighten us all (I'm looking at you, dok)

I agree with that strategy, but we are already working with such a minimal set of people already that I wanted to be inclusive rather than exclusive.

This rating system doesn't take in to account that you played a 'fun' army last year instead of being uber competitive like the rest of us.

Re: Who is the best Gencon Main Event Player?

OK, I looked at this a little closer.

Like I said above I have made DAY TWO 3 out of 4 years. The chart says I have only done it twice.

And more importantly to these rankings is the fact that I do not have 6 DAY TWO wins.

In 2006, there was no consolation match. I only won 1 game that year on DAY TWO.

So I have 5 DAY TWO wins, not 6. That should knock me down a peg or two.

I was a little fuzzy on 2006 since I wasn't there and there was limited data. I assumed since there we 1-8 placings, that there were consilation matches to get all those places, sounds like I was wrong in that assumption.

so where are the day 1 stats coming from. I should have more than 8 points there, since I was 5-0 in 06 for day 1 and went 4-1 for day 2 losing to spider in the final. I was 4 -1 this year for day 1 but knocked out in the first round of day 2. I think 07 was 3-1-1 with one tie to spider, which screwed us both out of day 2. And 08 was just an epic fail of 3-2 for day one. I'm ranked below funrun? WTF, I call for Tech support!

In my system (keep in mind that this is just one way of looking at things!) you don't get any points for wins or losses, only final standings. Wins and losses are listed for reference and to resolve ties...as stated in the original post. Example Spider and Mattster both have 85 pts but Spider has more Day 1 wins (the second method for resolving ties). Hendal and Jormi also tied, but Hendal has more Day-2 wins, so he is listed ahead of Jormi. The points scored for your final placing are listed in the first post.

Yes - you did get the short end of the stick for the tie with Spider. This definitely hurt you and Spider in the rankings. This tie issue has happened the last two years with the Pastimes system causing issues. I think Clarissmus missed the second day last year because of a tie. He was 3-1-1 and three people that were 3-2 made the second day instead of him. Hopefully things are different in the future...I trust Ry is doing everything he can to make our tournaments the best they can be.

I'll get the results that you gave me updated on the spreadsheet.

Sigh, Neo you were not 5-0 in '06. We have this same discussion every year.

I beat you on Day 1 in 2006. (god how many times do I have to post this before you acknowledge that it happened? Spider and I were the 5-0s in 2006. Shall I link your post, again, where you specifically reference that it did happen?? Trust me, I have it bookmarked from the last time I had to prove it to you) You were 4-1 on Day 1 in 2006. (I think your confusion is coming from going 5-0 in the General tournament that same year, playing the exact same army.) You beat me on Day 2 in the semi final round and moved on to face Spider in the final. There is no way you could have gone 4-1 on Day 2 in 2006 because there was a maximum of 3 games to be played. You went 2-1 on Day 2 in 2006. Spider went 3-0. Jormi and I went 1-1.

Good god, man, let the light shine in!

Funny, I am correcting my win totals down and Neo is flat out making some up. 4-1 on Day 2???? Nobody has ever gone 4-1 on day 2 because it isn't freaking possible.

Re: Who is the best Gencon Main Event Player?

I updated the first post to have the correct # of wins for everyone.

The main reason I used final standings as apposed to wins for this ranking system was because we don't have detailed records on wins and losses for day 2 in 06 and for any year on the first day other than for those that made the second day.

So it wouldn't have cost either of us anything to win or lose. He got me with a hodgepodge army, with ubber dice rolling on his part.

Dude! that isnt even possible, ethier. We had 8 make Day 2 in 2006. The best you could have done was 3-0 and only if you won it all, and of course you didn't. You went 2-1.

I think I am going to put Neo's performance line from 2006 in my signature so he will stop making stuff up.

BTW, you lost to me twice in 2006. Once in Day 1 and once in a win-a-wave. I lost to you in the General and then on Day 2, when it really counted.

This is kind of a silly thread.

Coming to the conclusion that anyone but Mattser or Spider is the best main event player by making up some bogus formula doesn't prove anything.

They've both won it twice. They've both made it to day 2 thrice.

The only time spider didn't make day 2, he tied Neo (2nd place from the year before), and lost only to the guy who won it all. 2 of his 3 wins even came against people who made it to day 2. The two years that he won it all, he went undefeated both days, which is something that Mattser hasn't done. Kind of funny that the year he makes it to day two playing 50 points fewer than nearly everyone else was his 'worst' year.

Mattser has won it twice, and lost to the guy who got in second (lonewolf) the year he didn't go on to win. Until this year, he was the only player to beat spider in the main event.

The cumulative result reflects this sentiment where they are 20 pts better than the next competitor!

well um, this is all well and good, but the way I look at it it, I am the 2nd best player in the land for the year, why cause I got 2nd in the Nat. Championship, the others years are history and don´t mean much to me. I beat Spider this year, which was very cool, and is a feather in my cap - yep he had 50 less points then me, but that was his choice and I think a pretty smart one for him. OK, OK I am just kidding, I am the 2nd luckiest player in the land, but whatever I got the DICE to prove it!

Re: Who is the best Gencon Main Event Player?

I stumbled across this thread a few days ago while looking for something else, and decided to try to update it for the last five years of Main Events. (It was a little bit of a pain trying to figure out exactly which years people played the Main, but I did the best I could do. I'd appreciate any corrections.)

I used lonewolf's scoring rubric without any changes, except that I averaged 3rd and 4th place in the years when the 3rd place game was not played (2011, 2013, and 2014).

I wasn't completely satisfied with either point total or average as a measure of player performance; I wanted something in between. So, borrowing from sports statistics, I took each players yearly total for every year they played, and subtracted some baseline score from it. This reflects how much better they did than a competitive player might expect to do.

Of course, it's hard to say how high that baseline should be. I decided to come up with two measures: a lower baseline, which I call VAN for (obviously) "Value Above @NecroBlade ", and a slightly higher baseline, which I call WAD for (also obviously) "Wins Above @Deroche ". The results end up being pretty similar but people do slide up or down a couple spots here and there.

Anyway, here are the results, with everyone with a positive score in these measures sorted by those values (and then by average when needed). You can switch over from VAN to WAD with the tab on the bottom:

If anyone wants to see the complete lists, the spreadsheet is HERE. Please understand that the people at the bottom of the lists are not the true worst Main Event players; just the people who have played a lot while making Day 2 just once or twice.

Deroche December 9th, 2014 03:15 PM

Re: Who is the best Gencon Main Event Player?

All I need now is some catchy Heroscapers.com forum title about the acronym WAD. That's family friendly.

Or maybe it just needs to say "I'm a baseline"

It's not really fair to be counting the results to 2009, as those included Day 1 wins in them. It kinda skews the data a bit.

This different methodolgy put the top 4 as Mattster, Lonewolf, Matthias, and Spider Poison.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...i/brackets.jpg

The bold. And the 2nd and 3rd table has a column for Day 1 wins.

Edit: ahh I see what you mean, they aren't counted into the score.

Re: Who is the best Gencon Main Event Player?

Wow, #75. I thought I'd do a little better than that. Not counting day 1 success definitely changes it a little bit. The year I did make day 2 I went 5-0, back before the days of Reverse the Whip.* I mis-drafted for the first game of day 2, and got knocked out. I did poorly one year because I tried using Q10 (mistake). The other two years I think I was in the top 20 or close to it; at that point the difference between making day 2 and not is how many times the people that beat you went on to win. I think I've seen K-boom take 17th place because last name seemed to be one of the later tiebreakers. GG T's.

Thanks for putting in the work.

*I guess now going 5-0 with a strong army is less impressive, because all the people trying to win it all aren't drafting that way?

dok January 5th, 2015 08:05 PM

Re: Who is the best Gencon Main Event Player?

The lack of day 1 results is somewhat limiting, although as you say they can be tricky to interpret in the RtW era. I could pretty much guarantee making day 2 every year these days, but I would probably lose within the first two rounds on day 2 every time (like I told Matt he would this year before the tournament started).

As I said, the bottom of the list isn't super-meaningful; it's not the worst players as much as "worst average day 2 results among players that have made day 2 at least once". Which is a kind of weird halfway measure.

Also, really, you're tied for #72. I know that makes you feel much better. ;)

I think I'm fine with being #8. All you need is a win to boost you up there I guess.

I've got a new respect for Sacred Band and Parmenio now though.

Parmenio is the new metagame. I've just been biding my time before I let the public know that.

How relevant are these rankings considering the fact that making Day 2 now really doesn't mean much for most. (Oh look, you brought Cheese.) Making Semis for Main Event is probably the line in the sand these days? @dok

:reapershrug: It means as much as it means. Before 2011, you could play the same cheese the whole way through. I don't feel the need to bring the format debate into this thread. I'm just extending the scoring system lonewolf first did in 2009 out through the current year.
