O.k. Initial problem sorted out I hope....

Greetings all and well met. This is my first post though I'll admit I've been lurking for a while. I was determined to not post until I had something to contribute, which required my digital camera setup to work. Nonetheless it now is and here goes.

Firstly, I'd like to thank everyone on this forum for their wonderful contributions and dedication to HeroScape, you have all inspired me. I used to paint miniatures some 10 years ago and saw Heroscape. I thought about it and figured it was the perfect excuse to get back to what I feel is a very zen hobby to have. I hadn't modded any terrain before but find myself doing that more than anything else.

So here's the first pic. I decided I'd try some new things and wanted a degree of variety to my terrain. The first hexes are my shot at a wartorn plain kind of look. It's one of the styles I use to replace the common green/grass hexes.

Close up of the same terrain:

This is some grass that I came up with. I decided that the war torn wasn't always the nicest look, so this is a little more fantastic...

And again a closeup:

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller...rmal_grass.jpg

So of course I had to do the other hexes. Here's some rocks:

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller...mal_rocks2.jpg

And some sand/desert tiles:

That'll do for now I guess. I have a few more projects and pics but I can't put them all up at once. I appreciate ANY feedback.

Helped ya out a little on the image link. Interesting terrain work!!

Ummm thanks. My computer aptitude took a nap and I'm fumbling through my first post right now.... think I'll resize some images and figure out why my link didn't want to work....

THIS POST NOW EDITED FOR TUTORIAL..

RENQUIST'S HEX TILE MODS.

Well this is going to be as brief as possible - I don't want to consume too much space with the pics and what not.

First things first, get all your supplies together:

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller...l_tilemod1.jpg
The hexes to be worked on and the base colors you'd like. (I'm using camo krylon that I use for my paintball gear mods.) The sealant goes on after all else is said and done. I'll be doing one of each basic hex type in this tutorial. I'm also doing my first swamp hex and using a new clear glue. Wish me luck.

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller...l_tilemod4.jpg
A selection of secondary colors for your hexes. I always go a couple of shades lighter; if not a few. This simply helps the depth of your tiles. There's the glue (I strongly recommend white pva glue,), a palette of sorts, a brush and a rag. Have a glass of water to clean your brush of course.

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller...l_tilemod2.jpg
There's my moss. Feel free to alternate for flocking or anything else you fancy. I use reindeer moss which can be found at craft stores. It comes in different shades, though they may be labeled the same. I'll be using two different mixes of moss. (Try to stay away from other mosses with a high dirt content. I used it for my wartorn terrain and the dirt is obvious.)

Next, follow your directions and spray your tiles. Make sure you get the sides.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller...l_tilemod3.jpg

Once dry, use some of your secondary color and a somewhat broad brush and brush across the sides at a 45 degree angle or so. Try not to have a lot of paint on the brush. I generally wipe it on my hand to get the desired amount. This way you won't cover up all your base coat.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller...l_tilemod6.jpg
See the green? That's half that side done. Terrible photo I know.

Next, use a light brushing technique to do the edges and between the raised hex sections with the same color.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller...l_tilemod8.jpg

This is where my rocks are done. Using less paint and a lighter brush stroke, paint inside the edges of the hex. I also dry brush across, to break up the monotony some more. On larger tiles, I also mix up my secondary colors for variety.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller...l_tilemod9.jpg

While waiting for the paint to dry, cut up your moss if needed. Pair of scissors and fine cuts works just fine.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller...l_tilemod5.jpg

EDIT But only if you don't have an available blender! I gave up on waiting for a coffee grinder and finally decided to try this. I figured it wouldn't work. SILLY ME! This method is far superior IMO. It will give less variation in color, but is much neater and much easier to work with.

http://tn3-2.deviantart.com/fs19/300...eroscape76.jpg
http://tn3-1.deviantart.com/fs19/300...eroscape76.jpg

When dry, squirt a dab of glue on each section.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller..._tilemod13.jpg

Use a broad brush to spread the glue. Grab a generous amount of moss and press it onto the hexes. If you you blended it, just sprinkle it over the tiles. This is the preferred method - much neater and flatter.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller..._tilemod12.jpg

Let it dry a moment, then remove the excess - first by tapping it upside down, then plucking away what is not wanted.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller..._tilemod14.jpg
Tadah!

PLEASE NOTE - These tiles were done with scissors and not blended. They are lumpy and whilst they work fine, blending is far superior. It is smoother, finer and much more uniform.

The sand is simple as well. Sand is easy to get at any craft store.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller..._tilemod15.jpg
Much like my grass, I like to vary my shades of sand, as well as the paint colors. Put the glue on, then pour enough sand over the glue.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller..._tilemod16.jpg

Tap it upside down and it's done.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller..._tilemod17.jpg

REMEMBER - when it's dry, spray it with your clear seal. you may have to touch these up once in a while, but it's really no fuss.

Here's a pic of everything that just got done:

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgaller.../tilemod18.jpg

Hope you had as much fun as I did!

EDIT - I was asked for some more in-depth advice regarding this tutorial. I thought I'd post my reply here for general information.

"Heh. Ok, The base color completely depends on your taste as I've done three different color combinations for grass. If you want to play it safe, buy the camo spray paint you can find at any hardware store. Forest free for dark base, army green for light.

After than, choose a secondary color on preference. Forest green works well with Apple paint Kelly green and Army green works well with Leaf green. The spray paint may cost a few bucks each but go a long way. The Apple paint are available to Wal Mart and are 44c a piece.

As for moss, go to your Michaels Crafts and find the Reindeer Moss. It's all the same thing but varies in color by the bag. They don't label it for color, and it all costs the same. Just find one or a couple that you like. I've seen it in shades of bright green, army green, very dark green, tan and brown. Just dig through the rack and you'll see plenty of variety.

For help with glue and drying, use the white pva like Elmers. The clear stuff takes forever to dry and is kind of shiny afterward. I place my pieces under a lamp because the weather here is very damp.

I HIGHLY recommend that you blend your moss. Start low and work higher. You could always try a coffee grinder. I like the look and feel of the scissor cut moss, but it clumps and require some trimming later. Blending it increases consistency, is easier to use and probably stands up to wear and tear much better. If you want variation in color, blend some different colors and sprinkle different colors on your glue here and there."

Just a little help for you. When posting a picture that you want to show in your thread, the file should be jpg and I noticed yours is bmp. Hope that helps you out.

Welcome to Scapers and glad that you want to contribute, that seems to be rare as of late.

Renquist September 7th, 2007 11:43 AM

Yup and thank you kindly. Had to convert them all and upload again - was in the process when you posted.

Thanks for the welcome and I'll have plenty more to contribute.

NecroBlade September 7th, 2007 11:49 AM

Welcome to the site!

Your stuff looks great. Is the grass too thick to play on, though?

Renquist September 7th, 2007 11:51 AM

Hey thanks Necro.

Actually it's not. I've stacked it, tested it and had a blast. It's not as neat as flocking but that was too expensive and too easy IMO. Figured I could save some cash and attempt something a little different. I have some objects that need weighting in the base maybe, but all the hexes work just fine.

insomnimaniac September 7th, 2007 12:10 PM

Looks great and thank you for sharing. I don't know if I missed it, but you said you didn't use flock, so, what did you use?

Is that 1 master set or multiples?

Renquist September 7th, 2007 12:15 PM

I only have a total of 2 sets. I generally just convert the tiles based on what they are originally. Keeps it balanced. I haven't shown all tiles of course - quite a few where converted for other things.

Both types of grass actually use moss. Takes quite some time to chop it up. The Wartorn theme is base painted with a textured spray paint.

The other grass is base painted with an army green and then lightly brushed with a leaf green. Breaks up the monotony.

The method is pretty much identical to Grishankh's work.

It takes some time of course, but it keeps me busy. Whole reason I'm doing it anyway... though Heroscape is just plain fun to play.

Ted September 7th, 2007 05:14 PM

Very nicely done.
