Yes, which is why you often see the words "patent pending" on new items. Getting a patent is a fairly involved process. I've worked for companies that had departments that did nothing but prepare patents, and monitor other company's patents or potential infringements.

So I was looking at my old BGG post and noticed on the Google result for patent US2006043674 as of today (2019-05-15), the Application status is Abandoned! I'm no legal expert, but I think it is time for @Craig Van Ness to jump on this as it is his patent and is should be his right to renew, so he can make more heroscape-compatible terrain with Soaring Rhino.

No, I just looked yesterday. I guess that last line on Google patent just is always today. Some searching found these other patents and applications, and it looks they are not set to expire until 2020-11-28 & 2021-02-06:
