New England Heroscape: 4x400
Saturday, November 16th, 2019
New Players Welcome

Where: The Whiz Game Store
122 Turnpike Road, Westborough, MA, 01581

When: Show up 12:30 PM, Round 1 starts at 1 pm. 50 minute rounds.

What: 4 rounds of a Swiss-Style Tournament.

Format: 4 Round Swiss style tournament. Players bring 4 pre-drafted 400 point armies, 20 figures limit, no Marvel, no C3V or other customs. No figure can be used in more than 1 army. Write each army down on an index card, numbered 1-4. At the beginning of each round I will randomly select 1 - 4, and you will use that numbered army for that round. No number will be repeated, so you will play each of your armies exactly once.
If you need a few figures to help fill out your army, I can lend them to you (assuming I haven't already lent them to someone else). Just send me a PM to reserve the figure.

Entry: There will be a $10 entry fee.

Please let me know by replying to this thread if you are planning on attending, so that I have an accurate estimate for the number of maps I need to bring.

Prizes: There will be a prize table with awards for the top finisher and additional awards via a point-weighted drawing.

For anyone who wants to enter but is missing a figure (or figures) they would like to run, or doesn't have an army at all, reach out to me and I can likely provide the figure/army. (Please reach out before the day-of though)

Maps:
The Borogoves
Highways and Dieways
Fulcrum
Dance of the Dryads
April
Invasion
Fire Isles
Remains of Clionesia
(in the order they will be used if we have less than 16 people)

Glpyh Pool: Ulaniva (Unique Attack), Dagmar (Initiative), Wannok (Wound), Kelda (Healer), Valda (Move), Lodin (D20); no treasure glyphs

Attending:
Chris Perkins
itsbuzzi
KourtJester
Arctrooper506 +1

Yeah I'll be coming, perhaps with 1 or more guests, banking on 1. I might also be able to bring a map if you need it, but judging from last time it doesn't seem you need pieces unless you want something specific.

What is 4x4? We have 4 armies to choose from per map, so on map 1 say army 2 looks best I use that and then next round I can use something different with no restrictions? Can unique figures (like Raelin) be in multiple armies? I might need to borrow some things to be able to field 4 (or 8 or more) different armies.

Thanks for hosting!

Re: New England Heroscape: 4x400

Added maps and added more details in the description regarding the format.

Essentially, you bring 4 armies numbered 1 - 4. Each round is randomly assigned a number 1-4, and you play that army each round. So you play each of your armies once, but you don't control which round that army is played in.

A figure can only be used in one army - if you bring Raelin one army, she can't be in any of the other 3.

I'm happy to lend a few figures to anyone who needs them, on a first come first serve basis (but realistically I should have enough, unless you are the 2nd or 3rd person to ask for the same figure).

Awesome thanks for the info I haven't played 4x4 obviously lol. Judging on the maps and amount of figures you can lend out sounds like you have a ton gosh lol.

Interested. I'm introducing the game to six new people tomorrow. If it goes well, I'll see if I can get a group of us to come.

Sounds like a blast! Because of the type of format if all goes well 4 players can share the same units and use them at different times so they can compare notes when the dust has cleared. Hope to have you!

Re: New England Heroscape: 4x400

OP updated with:
- Venue (The Whiz Game Store in Westborough MA)
- Mentions
- Updated Attendee List

For anyone thinking about attending but unsure on the army requirements, I've already picked out my 4 armies I will use for the event and have an additional 10 competitive 400 point armies (all B+ or better) (using figures that I will not be playing). Between those armies, that leaves over 2 full sets of armies, which as previously suggested by @itsbuzzi can support up to 8 players for anyone who needs additional figures. Alternatively, if you have 2 or 3 armies you already want and just need one or two more, I can also lend out a few of those individual armies to help out. Just PM me with any figures you'd like to use to reserve them.

Wondering if Samuel Brown is legal for this tournament? I know he became official late in the game but was just wondering if someone could bring him in an army

Yes, he is legal for this tournament.

Samuel Brown is as official as the other figures developed by Hasbro & WotC despite the sculpt itself (sadly) never being distributed.

I suggest all of you listen to the latest Casters of Valhalla podcast CoV Entry 3: A+ to A Units, as they spend a lot of time ranking 4x400 armies.

I wonder where that user question came from? :)

On a more serious note, thanks for linking the podcast, it's a great resource for anyone coming to the tournament to have.

(for what it's worth, I finalized my armies before I got my podcast answer, so we'll see how they do at the event)

Thanks for the question CP! Unfortunately, I won’t be back home in time to make this event, but have fun!

Hi I will be attending this Saturday! do i need to bring order markers and stuff or just my armies?

I have played casually for a few years but this will be my first tournament!
I hope I know all the rules correctly XD I have only played with people that I have taught the game before...

Awesome, look forward to meeting you there.

Ideally you would bring order markers & dice with you along with your armies, although I will have a few spare sets for anyone who forgets them and you're welcome to them if needed. But assuming you have them, do try to bring them.

And if you have any rule questions during the event (or before/after), I'd be happy to answer them.

Is it unfair to ask which of the listed maps will be played? I know that you mentioned that there was an order of maps that was based upon attendance and was just wondering as I finish polishing up my teams which maps are definitely going to be at the tourney

Perfectly fair question.

Right now we have 7 people confirmed, so we will use the first 4 maps:
The Borogoves
Highways and Dieways
Fulcrum
Dance of the Dryads

If we get more people, we'll use the next 4 in this order:
April
Invasion
Fire Isles
Remains of Clionesia
(so April is fairly likely to be used, Remains of Clionesia is fairly unlikely to be used)

Tournament tomorrow!

I'm building maps now, and looking forward to seeing ya'll tomorrow.

In case anyone needs them, I'll have 4 different 400 point armies with me as spares available just in case.

For those who asked for figures, I've got them pack and ready for you tomorrow.

See ya'll tomorrow

I know this is ages ago, but what were the results. checking on armies that were brought as well.

Re: New England Heroscape: 4x400

I don't have a list of all armies for participants, but we had 3 people tied with a 3-1 record:
Curry_Noodles (won on d20 tie-breaker)
itsbuzzi
Chris Perkins

I know my own armies:
4th Mass x4, Alastair (Won v. ?)
Nilfheim, Greenscales x2, Marro Warriors, Eldgrim (Lost v itsbuzzi w/ Hive, Stingers x4)
Raelin, Q9, Rats x3 (Won v. Court Jester w/ Grimnak, Nerak, Heavies x3)
10th Reg x4, Marcus (Won v. Curry_Noodles w/ Braxas, ?)

If anyone else has results, feel free to post them to and we might get a good overview of the full results

itsbuzzi March 19th, 2020 08:42 AM

Re: New England Heroscape: 4x400

Army 1: 4x stingers, 1x hive, played chris. (Hive still didn't make its points but it was a good soft target instead of hitting my stingers. Now that I recall I believe I went for the greenscales first to turn off bonding then flooded the board, my stingers had enough range from the hive to reach the whole board. Lucky rolls for some I believe to take out the dragon.)

Army 2: 3x greenscale warriors, Nif, (I *think* that was it, not the correct amount of points but I also didnt use it because I had the bye that round)

Army 3: krav, 2x rats, nikita, gorillas, otani (Someone ran enair imperium killed some things then I kited their soilders, romans and marcus, cant remember who, and threw rats at them for the win)

Army 4: 3x knights of weston, 1x sir gilbert, 1x realin. (Played Curry that played heavy gruts real grindy match I recall we went to time and I had the last turn and I needed to kill 3 points worth to win and slipped on dice. Closest game ever.)
