Re: Heroes of Fiction: Design Thread

You could make her get to leap up to 4 or 5 spaces high and allow it up to 3 times per move or something. That would definitely be parkour. Just spit balling though.

PARKOUR MOVEMENT (II.2)
When moving, Faith is never attacked with leaving engagement attacks. She ignores height limits, may move through all figures, and may climb obstacles such as ruins. At any point before, during, or after moving normally, Faith may Leap. Leap has a move of 4. When counting spaces for Leap, ignore elevations. Faith may leap over water without stopping, leap over figures without becoming engaged, and leap over obstacles. Faith may not leap more than 7 levels up or down in a single leap. After leaping, Faith may continue moving.

I think there are three routes for Parkour Movement
1- Continue tweaking this design - process - vote
2- Propose completely different design and mode of translation/interpretation - vet - compare - process - vote
3 - Use this design - vote

That might work functionally, but I question the feel of the power. Hopping around. Feels more of a pogo-stick power (which I'm sure some character to use that exists in the wide world of media)

I think it could be considered finished, depending on what Hotcakes thinks, otherwise tweaking could be continued. I don't think that we should use route 2, we've covered almost every area of the character so far and I don't think we can come up with another good design theme-wise.

@CJtheMighty I apologize, to clarify, that list was specifically for Parkour Movement. I have since edited my original post to reflect this and mitigate future confusion.

The intent was to say that Parkour Movement is a needed power but the current translation of it is going about as far as it can go. Tweaks include 15 to 7 and 3 to 4, and brushing over of language.
If that particular design of Parkour Movement still isn't sitting right on some people's aesthetic eye (an always valid objection), then perhaps a whole new approach for the power needs order.
Option 3 on that list basically said, the tweaks that have been made have satisfied initial complaints and perhaps brush over with a playtest and zoom out and in to any other aspects so that we may sooner vote the entire project.

Ah, thank you for clearing that up. In this case, I think that we should continue tweaking until the LD is satisfied. My issue with Parkour Movement is that the current wording isn't clear about whether or not Leap takes up movement spaces or not. One misread allows Faith to potentially move 9 spaces (Or correct read, we haven't been clear about as to what we exactly want this portion to be).

Excellent. Posts like this are needed for better discussions.
In short: Yes.

In long:
Allow me to explain intention and then we may bridge over confusion.
Starting with the original:

Contention:
Heroscape doesn't have an action queue or "stack" like in Magic: the Gathering. When more than one thing happens at the same time, the 20-sided die determines order.
A mechanic in the game overrides this. It is phrased in two ways, "immediately" and "at any time." These two signify an interruption and instant placement to the top of what happens next.

Quote:

At any point before, during, or after moving normally, Faith may Leap. /leap definition./ After leaping, Faith may continue moving.
Move-check range-attack.
Faith may interrupt her normal move. This interruption may be at steps 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. She interrupts to Leap. Leap has a special move of 4. This is not a replacement move; Note: it would be stated if it was.
After leaping, to clarify, Faith may continue moving (normally.) She may move the remainder of her steps.

Quote:

Faith... ignores height limits, ... may climb obstacles such as ruins.
When climbing, she may climb things higher than her height due to ignoring height limits. Because Leap "occurs at any time," she may break the climb at any point to leap up or down 7 levels, and then continue climbing levels as normal.

She has an effective move of 9, was 8. When Tracking, Brave Arrow has an effective move of 7.

When leaping from one building to another, she may continue moving normally.

Note: "continue moving normally" was indeed once used. When Courier language was added and didn't include "normally," the phrase was removed from Parkour Movement to match.

If 9 is too much, I would recommend returning Leap to 3 from the adjusted 4.

Flavor Note: If we don't like the word "Leap" we may change that also. "Tumble" or even "Parkour" are options from many.

@Confred is reminding us of the beautiful intricasies in HeroScape's wording and saying that yes, Faith does have an effective move of 9.

Also, after I posted, I read through the wording carefully disecting it and reached the proper conclusion. In the display thread, we may want to mention that Faith does have an effective move of 9, the general public may reach the wrong conclusion.

originally I wrote an alternative to leaping, but as I tweaked and edited the thought I realized why we didn't go that route. thus delete.

barry, I'd gladly explain anything for you.
