Soldiers of Valhalla - nominations and discussion

We are open for business! :D

Just as a reminder, these are the general features that we will be judging on, so keep them in mind for your nominations:
  • Balance-Are the points correct?
  • Playability-Are the powers clear and understandable? Are its master stats appropriate? If it is Large or Huge, what type of base does it use? Is it visually distinct from pre-existing units?
  • Creativity-Does it add something new to the game?
  • Theme-Does it fit in the HS universe?
  • Accessibility-Is the sculpt, or sculpts, available, at a reasonable price, and with limited modification? To help with this, it is encouraged that a link to the mini is included with the nomination (check out Lamaclown's list of mini sites for help with that). Per our new guidelines, we are no longer considering this at the time of review.
Our mission is to review custom units for balance, playability and creativity and to approve deserving candidates for inclusion in HeroScape play. Approved figures will fit in the HeroScape canon thematically and will be suitably priced.

We rely on community involvement in nominating units which will then be playtested by a panel of judges. Judges are permanently appointed, and serve until they choose to step down. The current Judges are:Soldiers of Valhalla display thread (inducted units)

SECTION 1: Submission guidelines and tips
1. Any number of units may be nominated in a single post, including "synergistic" units that function best as a group. When nominating multiple units, you may choose one of four options for your submission:
a) Choose a unit to be the "primary" unit of the submission, and the rest to be "secondary" units. The "primary" unit may pass by itself without the "secondary" units passing, but if the "primary" unit fails, all "secondary" units will be withdrawn. "Secondary" units will be judged based on the "primary" unit.
b) Designate the entire submission as a "faction". For a "faction" submission, if a single unit fails, the remainder of the "faction" will be withdrawn.
c) Choose a group of units (more than one but less than the total number of submissions) to be the "primary" group and the remainder to be the "secondary" group. The "primary" group will be considered as a "faction" under Section 1-1b, and the "secondary" units will be considered as "secondary" units under Section 1-1a in relation to the "primary" group.
d) All units stand or fall on their own merit, as if they were separate nominations.
2. Nominated units require a card formatted in a manner that is easy to read.
3. Miniatures must be listed in the submission, readily available, and appropriately scaled, with consideration taken for cost and for labor, such as paint, required to obtain the sculpt. In all but some special cases the miniatures must be pre-painted.
4. All units suggested should fit thematically within the Heroscape universe. Units should follow a Heroscape general and should include an origin world that is part of the Heroscape canon in almost all cases.
5. Anyone can nominate a unit for consideration. Nominated units require a majority vote (50%+1) of the Council before they will be considered for review.
6. Do NOT slap a unit together and nominate it for consideration. Game play experience and observations are encouraged. The SoV is a tool for ensuring excellence, not for helping refine a rough draft. (The Pre-SoV Workshop is a great place to look for help refining a unit before submitting it here.)

SECTION 2: How units are judged
Units nominated for consideration will go through the following process after a majority of acceptance votes by the judges:
1. Units accepted for review will be playtested competitively at least once by five judges.
2. Consideration for approved units will be given, generally, based on the following criteria and in this order: balance, playability, creativity, and theme.
3. Time for consideration is: as long as it takes for the judges to make an informed decision.
4. Great units will be approved, not good ones. Don't let this discourage you.
5. Judge discussions will occur in public and private forums on the non-official Heroscape web site: Currently www.heroscapers.com
6. Reviews on units will be public with status and results presented.
7. Units must receive 4 reviews supporting induction and no more than 1 review against induction in order to be considered for acceptance into the Soldiers of Valhalla, after which they will be reviewed by the C3V and if approved there will be re-formatted and given the Soldiers of Valhalla Seal of Approval and admitted into the C3V as well.

SECTION 3: Self-governance
1. The Council will contain a number of judges that the sitting judges find appropriate, but never less than 5.
2. Judges will maintain their position unless:
a) They are not heard from by fellow judges on the official non-official Heroscape web site for a period of 31 days, or
b) They abstain for a total of three months or for three consecutive units under review, whichever comes later.
3. If a vacancy on the council occurs, judges will be replaced by those who:
a) show interest in serving, and
b) after consideration of the sitting judges receive 75 % vote of approval. Voting and discussion of a replacement judge may occur in private.
4. Judges will not be allowed to vote on their own units. During the judging of their own units their vote will be considered an abstention for the percentages needed to both playtest and approve the unit. Their vote will NOT be counted as an abstention for purposes of the "three consecutive units" portion of Section 3-2-b.
5. These by-laws may be changed and amended at any time by a 75% vote of sitting judges.

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla nominations and discussion

It does mean that, though in the end I believe that we are looking for cards to fit fully within the Heroscape world (note #3 above). So, it's likely that we'd end up doing a revision of the card to match other Heroscape cards.

This is still a point of some discussion among the judges, but in my mind #3 implies a standard Heroscape card at some point.

Yes, any well organized card is allowable for review, but accepted units will be reformatted to a traditional HS-style card.

Do you have an art guy for this project? I would be totally willing to lead on that front. I just do not have the time to playtest that would be needed to judge.

Thanks for the offer. We'll talk about it and let you know. Of course, first a card has to actually make it past our grueling review--might be months, even years... :D.

Why do you think I am willing to help? ;) Won't be much work. But I would love to design a stamp, then create a good card for each unit we passed with the stamp. atmospro is supposed to hook me up with his production quality template soon. 8)

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla nominations and discussion

Since any nominated card must have an available miniature to go with it you can check the availability of your miniature using the links below to various online miniatures games stores.

Site Sponsors:

Auggie's

Cool Stuff, Inc.

Miniature Market

Troll and Toad

Wargamer's Headquarters
(House Mouse Games is a Site Sponsor as well. The above list represents the Site Sponsors who carry other games in addition to Heroscape)

Other Stores:

Fantization (one of my favorites)

Games Empire

FRP Games (another really good one)

RPG Shop This one seems to have disappeared

Noble Knight Games

Paizo

The Warstore

Reaper Mini

Crocodile Games

Privateer Press (Hordes, Warmachine, Monsterpocalypse, Voltron [if only Voltron was the right scale])

Role 4 Initiative (D&D)

Wyrd Miniatures (Malifaux)

Games Workshop (I know, I know, but some people do use their sculpts)

Icon USA

Team Covenant (they specialize in Monster Apocalypse)

There are others but if a miniature used for a custom can't be found on any of these sites, chances are it is no longer available.

Also, sites like Cool Mini or Not probably wouldn't be acceptable as a source for availability. It has a gallery of some incredible paint jobs (visit it if you've never been there) but it isn't a good source to purchase from.

If you know of other stores that offer something in miniatures that you don't think any of the above offer feel free to let us know through PM and it can be added to this post.

You'll have to add Games Workshop to the list Lama. I know they aren't well loved by some but the stuff they put out works great for what we need.

The Soldiers of Valhalla is ready for nominations.

Just as a reminder, these are the general features that we will be judging on, so keep them in mind for your nominations:
  • Balance-Are the points correct?
  • Playability-Are the powers clear and understandable? Are its master stats appropriate?
  • Creativity-Does it add something new to the game?
  • Theme-Does it fit in the HS universe?
  • Accessibility-Is the sculpt, or sculpts, available, at a reasonable price, and with limited modification? To help with this, it is encouraged that a link to the mini is included with the nomination (check out Lamaclown's list of mini sites for help with that)

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla-READY FOR NOMINATIONS!

I'm not generally the type to nominate my own items, but I think in the case of customs it's going to be hard to get lots of nominations by other folks due to the vast number of threads out there.

Given the above, I am putting forward one of my own customs for nomination. I have playtested these guys a number of times (a couple of which are recorded in my custom thread) and have made a number of tweaks to their original design. I think it's a solid figure, but I would not be surprised at all if you guys felt it needed a tweak or two as I don't have the strategic mind for this game that I know alot of you guys do :)

As such, I humbly put forward 'The Nightwalker' and his 'Bodaks' for nomination into the Soldiers of Valhalla.

The unavailability of the figure leads me to have to vote NO to review as well for DW10K.

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla-READY FOR NOMINATIONS!

Deathwalker 10,000
OK it looks like a Thor II from Battletech...but if you try to find that figure in minature form...its almost impossible. I thought I would look up alternatives and offer them, but Mechwarrior miniature are sold out everywhere.

So with this in mind, I am voting No to reveiw

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla-READY FOR NOMINATIONS!

I think that every figure that can hit the board needs to have an explicit point cost, so I vote NO to review the Nightwalker and Bodaks.

Edit: With ZB's NO vote for krysto2002's Deathwalker 10000, it has recieved 3 NOs and is removed from the process.

I have to agree; even the Rechets have a point cost. I like the concept but must vote NO to review The Nightwalker and Brodak because of one being a non-costed unit (it is hard to determine the balance of a figure that has no cost, even if its cost is "inherent" in another figure's cost).

The one thing I would ask however is try not to look at the Bodak as it's own figure...because it really isn't in the traditional sense.

The Bodak is really a special power of the Nightwalker, and as such, was built directly into the points of The Nightwalker. Having to spend points on the Bodak's wouldn't really work as you never know how many you are going to have and it's largely dependant on the type of battle going on. There may be battles where it makes no sense to create a Bodak due to the tactics being used by your enemy (and the inherent risk in creating them). Regardless, you can never have more then 3, and I never found it to be overpowered. (at least not in my hands, hehe). Those decisions are what I was hoping would make the figure interesting to use as well as balanced.

I 100% understand if this new mechanic will not work for you guys, just wondering if looking at it from a different perspective changes your thoughts at all?

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla-READY FOR NOMINATIONS!

Sorry, but no (at least for me). I understood that they are "part" of the Nightwalker, but since they have their own card and their own figure(s), they need their own price, imo. Lamaclown's example of the Rechets is perfect-you have no idea if you'll get to use them, but you have to pay seperately for them anyways.

They're a cool idea, but I'm not ready to break so far away from HS convention yet (Fanscape might take us there eventually, though :D).

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla-READY FOR NOMINATIONS!

Thanks for taking another look Killo, and I understand.

I would argue that the Rechets are not really the same, as I can't think of any example where you wouldn't really want to summon them, where as I can think of a number of situations where I would't want to create a Bodak (in addition to not being able to due to the creation requirements), but I know it's a little out there as far as abilities go :)

Thanks again for the eyes on the custom though :)

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla-READY FOR NOMINATIONS!

There are two things I will be checking for reflexively when I see a nomination. 1. Is the mini information there, and 2. Is the card written in gud English. If one of those is missing then the card is, in my opinion, not something I would ever vote yes for, so I may as well vote 'no' to review.

The Deathwalker 10,000 violates Rule 1 so I vote no.

It's difficult for me to overstate the importance of the availability of the mini. If others can't get it, why should it be included in the HeroScape canon?

I read the Nightwalker and Bodak cards (again) and Therrian's follow up comments with some interest. I remember reading it the first time, it was either Therrian's thread or maybe a competition.

I don't think at this point it will be getting reviewed, but I will add an additional concern. As I read the card the Nightwalker can destroy friendly units to create Bodaks. I suspect that was intended but I have significant concerns about the power of that unit when he can create his own bonding squad, and I'm curious to know if Therrian has played him that way. Needing an 11 or higher to create the Bodak might be prohibitively risky if the unit is a Krav, but not so much if it's a Deathreaver.

Give Nightwalker a bunch of rats and not only do you have a screen to shield him from range, but you have board control *and* a steady supply of Bodak parts.

Therrian, thank you for responding to the other judges with your thoughts, it's a very interesting concept, using essentially wandering sculpts as additional arms of the Nightwalker. They are, of course, as a practical matter a regenerating bonding squad and I'm sure you made an effort to build that in to the 220 point cost.

Very interesting innovation, though I have a serious concern about how easy it would be to generate (and regenerate) the bonding squad by destroying friendlies.

I'm also struggling to wrap my brain around two other issues related to Nightwalker. 1. What about start zone size, and 2. The whole concept of a 'common hero' that is and is not a unit of its own. I wonder if this guy isn't just bending too many rules at once.

No to Nightwalker, but many kudos for the aggressive innovation. Looks like fun, but just too many subtle (and not so subtle) problems he might have to be a part of the canon.

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla-READY FOR NOMINATIONS!

To be honest, I had never considered attacking friendlies, and that does open up some interesting possibilities...and I can totally see where that changes the way this guy could be played.

Thanks for pointing that out!

I would probably remove that possibility from the figure going forward as I do agree that it provides some power-creep that would be potentially balance wrecking.

Thanks again for the feedback...learned something new about the figure, who woulda thought!

3 NOs removes Therrian's Nightwalker and Bodaks from the process.

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla-READY FOR NOMINATIONS!

I always wondered what you guys saw in DW10K I didn't. I honestly don't think he's my best... just because someone nominated it and put it through CHCG24 doesn't mean it is my best. Personally, I would rather see Gordy or Asmodeus or the gruts or even the freakin' Raptors nominated for something! But I can't nominate my own cards as far as I know, so I'll be on the lookout for good customs for you guys.

BZZZZ!!! Incorrect, sir. It certainly doesn't say anywhere you can't, because you can.

In fact, to date a full one half of our nominations have been nominations by the creator of the custom. ;)

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla-READY FOR NOMINATIONS!

If that's the case: :duh::excited:
I'd like to nominate the following:
Asmodeus - uses deathrattle viper from D&D, it's about $0.50 for a hero from fiction that we all love and fear equally - "look into my eyes and I will show you eternity..."

Blood Raptor -a fair substitution for Swogs and a good unit on their own, uses bloodseeker drake from D&D, also about $0.50

Gordyrr - Golden Dragon hatchling for Jandar, but not the cheapest figure, about $10.00

Swarm Gruts - A NEW ORC SQUAD, and all you need is BLADE GRUTS!

Einar's Centurions, their playability is an enigma to me at the moment, but it sounds like fun, just sub in a squad of Romans!

5 Easy, cheap custom units that all fit perfectly in HS! Some may use D&D figures, but they are FAR from D&D units.

Go for it, Krysto. Nominate one or more of 'em, similar to the way the others were nominated.

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla-TAKING NOMINATIONS!

Here are my decisions for the five Krysto Customs nominated:

Asmodeus - 50 points for a combo of Me-Burq-Sa and Sujoah - Sorry this is too powerful for 50 points -- My vote is No

Blood Raptor - I like these guys, but again they under-costed. If an opponent figure has a few wounds, you could conceivably have 3 attacks of 6 for 90 points. Sorry that is too powerful - My vote is No

Einars Centurions - First of I'm not sure who would spend 150 points for a Unique squad. Secondly they are a combo of legionaries, Sentinels and Minions who bond, Again too powerful -- My vote is No

Swarm Gruts - Swarm Tactics is just confusing - My vote is No

Gordyrr - Doesn't look that bad...but it is under-costed for a dragon that can attack up to three figures and has ranged counterstrike like the Oni, if he was 200-220 points maybe but at 145, sorry again my vote is No.

You should probably clarify this in the nomination guidelines:

Does the sculpt have to be an original sculpt or can it be a reused Heroscape sculpt?

No it does not have to be a original sculpt, since the game already has re-paints we decided that they would be OK.

What do you mean? Why would you use a HS figure that was not re-painted to represent a different unit? How would you differentiate them?

Could you PM me an example, so we do not clutter the Nomination thread.

Re: Soldiers of Valhalla-TAKING NOMINATIONS!

My suggestion to nominate "one or more" was not intended to encourage 5 in a post. As far as I've noticed, nobody goes to the BoV and nominates 5 maps at once. Even Dignan's maps only go in one at a time.

Another preliminary remark: Speaking for myself, and maybe yes maybe not for the other judges, I am looking for something significantly different from many of the fine customs I've seen on these boards. I want to review units that are *balanced* and *thematic* and have *balanced costs.* Also they need to be playable not just for you, customs creator, and your friends, but for me and my friends and for the various 'Scapers around the globe. Not just for fun, casual play, but for tournament play.

Many of the fine customs around the site, like Therrian's Nightwalker and Bodaks, look outstanding and bring new flavor to the game. But that does not mean they are necessarily ready to withstand the rigors of, say, two 11 year olds trying to understand the card, or one guy nonchalantly passing it to his opponent at a tournament and the TD has to come over to try to decipher the 1,000 conditions on the activation of Giant Evil Ray Gun Death Lazer Mini Explosion Quasi Special Attack.

For now we don't have a rule against dropping 5 nominations in one post, and I have a few minutes to tap out my votes on some of Krysto's units, so here goes:

Asmodeus: Interesting combination of powers. Seems almost like a melee version of Me Burq Sa, which could explain his 50 point cost. I am troubled by a couple things. The venom counters, intended to last beyond the loss of Asmodeus (or not? wording is not clear), seem very powerful, particularly with the 25% chance to prevent defense dice from being rolled. I have my doubts about the amount of playtesting done at this point cost, frankly.

Also, and this may just be me, "Asmodeus" is not some randomly generated name pulled from a hat. It's an old, old name for the "King of Demons," though I first recognized it from AD&D as the name of the Lord of the Nine Hells. It just doesn't seem right to give a name like that to a height 3 snake, like giving "Charlemagne" to Finn. Just doesn't seem right. No to Asmodeus.

I'll have to give some thought to the Blood Raptors. It appears to me that they can only attack once per OM, it's a movement bonding thing they have going on. You list them as a Small 3; I suppose that means they are small and fit on a single hex base. I'll come back to this one later but I am concerned about its cost.

Gordyrr:
Very thematic. I like the multi-explosion special attack for a powerful dragon. How big is the sculpt? I thought we've seen images of this sculpt elsewhere on the forum and it's wyrmling-size. Regardless, combining the reflective scales and the multi-special attack with a 5/4 flyer with 6 move and 6 life seems like a lot of muscle for 145 points. No to Gordyrr.

I'll come back to the other two & the Blood Raptors another time. This has taken longer than I expected.

Fetid does need a bit of rewording but I think he's relatively well balanced, can be a pain in melee but he can only hit one thing at a time and dies easy enough from range.

Yeah its the D&D Minis Hezrou, this is the Angelfire one but there is a newer version in Legendary Evils as well that could be used. Both aren't too hard to come by. I've always loved the look of the figure. 8)

krysto's nominations:
Asmodeus-too cheap; NO to review
Blood Raptor-Pack hunting as worded is potentially unplayable; NO to review
Gordyrr-too cheap: NO to review
Swarm Gruts-awkwardly worded, but...intriguing. I'm interested in trying out SG x7, Chompy & Nerak; YES to review
Einar's Centurions-redundant unit, inconsistantly worded abilities; NO to review

robbdaman's nomination
Gor'vath-Yes to review

Undercosted. No to the Blood Raptor. I do like the idea of common heroes that work with each other, that keeps some of the theme of squad play without needing the multiple sculpts.

Quote:

Swarm Gruts - A NEW ORC SQUAD, and all you need is BLADE GRUTS!

Haze of Madness is interesting. But to make one squad of these you would need to give up two squads of Blade Gruts, and I don't think you'd want fewer than 6 squads of Swarmgruts, the way they're designed. Which would be 12 squads of Blade Gruts. No to Swarm Gruts.

No thanks, not taking a knife to my Romans and 4x Marcus (is that whose head that is?). They have other problems, too, but I do like the presentation of a unique squad. No to Einar's Centurions.

Very interesting unit. Very interesting. I vote yes to review & I'm looking forward to playtesting. I have a hunch he will be lots of fun but not be a tourney-type unit, which of course is fine with me.

As with many of the others I am curious to know the size of the actual mini. Rob, you don't have a picture of him in action, do you?
