NHSD: SoCal Slaughter! 2018

NHSD: SoCal Slaughter! 2018

All is negotiable!
First you must quickly let us know if Saturday, 11/3, is not possible.
All right, I've copied and pasted last year's info below, changing the date.
Let me know what you guys think about format ... the good and the bad.
And please give us an idea of whether you plan on attending, can't make it or just don't know.
Thanks!

NHSD: SoCal Slaughter! 2018
Hello all diehard 'scapers,
Saturday, 11-03-2018, again at warriorneedsfoodbadly's apartment complex rec. room at
14960 Sherman Way, Olive Tree Apartments, Van Nuys, 91405.
Hours are 8AM – 11PM. If necessary we may enter before 8AM.
There are enough tables/chairs for 14 games, so if more than 28 contestants sign up, we'll need more equipment.
Anyone wanting to stay for more gaming after the tournament is more than welcome!
There is a small kitchen for food prep, and storage.
There is a boys' restroom and a girls' restroom.
If you want alcohol, we suggest you wait until after the tournament and bring your own supply.
There is a good deal of parking (do not use the church parking at the Kester intersection),
but try and carpool because there is a lot of competition for those spots.

Location: warriorneedsfoodbadly's clubhouse in Van Nuys (map)
Date: Saturday, 11/3
Time: 11:00 AM check-in, 12:00 PM begin play, tournament until 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM (no breaks for food, so bring lunch/snacks!), free play and pizza (not free) afterwards

Anything in PURPLE is still a rough guesstimate; your opinions on these items in particular are solicited.

Rules:
Format: team play (either 2v2 or 2v1), timed matches, as many rounds as necessary, swiss/simple, partial scoring; see full rules below

Re: NHSD: SoCal Slaughter! 2018

Whew! Thread is up; stuff in purple is the most nebulous. Need confirmations for most everyone, and especially from @warriorneedsfoodbadly that we're still on for the rec room on the given date.

I've started on maps, but I'll have to save a full post on that topic for another night.

I'd make the bridge glyphs be two treasure and one power. Treasure glyphs seem like they'd promote the most movement.

I'm in. I'm waiting to hear back from the pop.

Thanks for posting the new thread, Xotli!
We are confirmed for the rec. room on Nov. 3.

Sure, that's a trivial change. Do you have any comments on the glyph list itself? Hopefully we can scrape together enough treasure glyphs. :D

Any other comments (from anyone) on the format?

I'll update the OP! Hopefully the pop can make it too. :)

Scha-wing! :toast:

Here's what I've come up with so far on maps:
Spoiler Alert!

All of these I'm pretty sure I can glue together with a few well-placed pieces; I plan to break out VirtualScape at some point and map all that out. Note also that this is enough maps for 20 people, which is probably way more than we need.

@superfrog , will you be bringing any maps? If so, please me know what sets you have and how many (approximate number okay). Then I can plug those into my spreadsheet and work out who to assign maps to in order to maximize efficiency on mapbuilding. ;)

Re: NHSD: SoCal Slaughter! 2018

I didn't bring my collection with me from PA, so I've been starting over. I have a few master sets, but my only expansion is an incomplete castle.

I have ~2 RotV, 1 SotM, ~1 FotA, and a few snow tiles.

Looks like I could bring Ticalla Sunrise if somebody would bring the Ticalla, though.

EDIT: I'm in talks to pick up a pretty big lot on Monday, which could really increase my ability to bring maps. Also if anybody wants an extra Raknar's Vision, I'll likely have one for sale.

EDIT 2: You can move me from MAYBE to YES. Looking forward to playing with you all.

Awwww. What happened to your old collection? Hopefully it went to someone deserving. :)

Updated! :)

Hopefully I'll get a chance to map out the bridges for the combo maps tonight or tomorrow.

Oh, also, I'll do a shout-out for those who we still need to get a firm answer from: @Detrimentalman , @DjKniteX , @michaeltaylor ... can I upgrade any of you guys to a definite "yes"? (I'm also working on nailing down the rest of the "maybe"s on our side. Hopefully soon.)

Re: NHSD: SoCal Slaughter! 2018

I moved to LA with about 3 suitcases, so I left my 'Scape with my little brothers. I suppose that eventually I could go steal it back...

Re: NHSD: SoCal Slaughter! 2018

I'm happy to bring some map stuff. Hopefully you still have my list somewhere because I don't really remember what I own.

The format seems pretty fun. I like the idea of team games. It definitely seems balanced against whoever is on the one-person side, but asymmetry can be fun. My only minor qualm is whether 45min rounds will be long enough for team play.

Thought I already said yes to the third. Yep.

Hey, I'm fine with longer game times. I just wanted to make sure we had enough time to get in all the rounds. But we can absolutely go longer if that will work better.

I wasn't sure you were a definite after the date changed. Just being thorough. :) I'll update the top post.

Well, I got VirtualScape working on this laptop and started playing around with gluing together my top two map choices: April, and A Couple Puddles. They actually fit together scarily well; you can check out the results in the Downloads section. A few notes to understand how I'm doing this:
  • I haven't reproduced the entirety of the two maps; I'm just showing the edges and how they fit together. Likewise, I didn't have any need to do all the levels—I just went high enough to cover all the places that the two maps would actually touch (which in this case was level 3).
  • The pink pieces are the bridge terrain. Since they can literally be any (full-height) terrain pieces (as long they don't have any terrain rules like road or lava field), I figured I'd use a neutral color. This also helps show where the one map ends and the other begins. (Note that, in this particular example, both maps had gaps on level 1, which would be covered by pieces on level 2. I filled in some of those just to make the whole structure more stable.)
  • The yellow pieces are representing random treasure glyphs (since VirtualScape doesn't know anything about treasure glpyhs). I made those a long time ago to represent the Marvel glyphs and I guess they were still lying around in the data directory. So I just repurposed them here. The random glyph that actually looks like a glpyh would be the random power glyph.

Obviously this is just one example, and it's just a suggestion. We could make the maps farther apart (I'm not sure it's physically possible to make them closer together), or offset them differently, or what-have-you. Also, we could add more bridge pieces, and we can change the placement of the glyphs. I'm just looking for some feedback here to see what you guys think of the efforts so far before I try to do them all. :)

EDIT: Besides adding D-man to the "yes" list, I also tweaked game times to 1:15 (just a thought), and changed the glyphs as superfrog suggested earlier (i.e. 1 power, 2 treasures).
