Watching Outlander as well. At the end of each episode, we've been both amazed that the show has passed so quickly and wanting to see more immediately.

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?

The new season begins:

Big Bang Theory

Agents of SHIELD

Gotham

Forever

Sleepy Hollow

Looking forward next week to:

Castle

And speaking of which, I had a weird experience today at the local Barnes and Noble! I saw a new hardback Nikki Heat book by Richard Castle on sale! The thing is, that's the fictional fiction by the fictional TV author of the show!!! It included an "author's" photo of actor Nathan Fillion as his character Castle, and a fictional (I assume) list of a dozen books he's allegedly written, including those of the old male character he supposedly killed off early in the series, and his new heroine as above. For those who know the show, it notes that the author "lives with his mother and daughter in New York City" (yes, they being two more of the show series characters).

Does anyone know what the deal is with this? I didn't see a ghost writer credited or anything else that would explain the joke, but didn't have time to look inside. For all I know, it could be a fan book about the show, or an actual mystery novel.

Whoa. The world is getting too META for me...

Wow! According to Wikipedia, six such novels have already made the NY Times Best Seller Lists!

Aldin September 24th, 2014 09:56 AM

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?

Pretty sure they're ghost-written, Chas. My daughter read the first two and said they were okay.

I've tried out Z-Nation and am giving up after two episodes. The way Zombies act in the show is sooooo inconsistent and the general overall level of "dumb" is soooooo high. They're trying for cool looking scenes, but don't have the chops to write the story that connects them.

Tried out Scorpion as well. I will give it one more episode because it's pretty hard to imagine it can possibly be as bad as the first episode indicates it will be. For a show that's supposedly about super-smart people, they sure think their audience is dumb.

~Aldin, watching the pilot of Gotham tonight and also looking forward to Castle

Ghostwriting the Castle books:

Further research indicates one columnist who things TV writer Tom Straw is the most likely candidate. He's published his own mystery novel, and appeared on Castle in a shadowy, nonspeaking cameo! The only official hint given so far is that the real author has in fact appeared on the show, which is why most guesses have been the authors "Richard Castle" plays poker with regularly.

Nathan Fillion has said that he does appear at book signing events, but as himself, not as "Richard Castle."

Gotham was acceptable. They've got something to build on there. I could still go either way though. Not sure that having a corrupt cop and a girl without a single line as my favorite takeaways from the pilot is a good thing since they're not long-term hooks for me.

The premier of Agents of Shield was well done. Really liked the way they just brought in Absorbing Man without the necessity of a back story. Really getting psyched for Walking Dead to start back up as well!

The Adventures of Pete and Pete. Great show.

Crank Yankers. This show is hilarious, they get comedians to make prank calls, and then they use muppets (can that word be use to talk about non-Jim Henson puppets, or no?) to depict what is going on. An example of a clean call would be an old guy looking for an apartment. He calls up apartment complexes that don't allow dogs and tries to rent one all the while yelling over the cacophony of noise his dogs are making. Or there is this one call where someone dials the wrong number and thinks they're talking to someone from UPS. The person says they have a tracking number for a parcel that should have been delivered a few days ago, so the "employee" tells her she should have sent it sooner or used FedEx and that he couldn't care less about her parcel.

What I'm watching since today is a 55" Magnavox screen. You can't appreciate the detailed background art work in superior Japanese anime until you can REALLY see it. I thought the first two episodes of "Forever" were pretty good. And I typically do NOT like procedural dramas.

Looking forward to "Once Upon a Time". Curious to see how they handle Elsa.

"Haven" has turned very dark. I like that.

"Face Off" is a great show. A reality show without the drama. I predicted Rashaad last season when I first saw him in the premier episode. I don't know why. Just a feeling. This time I am predicting Dina. Same feeling. That, and she's cute as a button.

Watching The Man Show. I do like Adam Carolla a lot, but it's a little tough to get through the blatant macho stuff, even if it is a joke. Not because it's offensive, but it's just kind of ridiculous and annoying. I like the skits though. Overall it's a good show.

Legend of Korra Book 4 is not on TV, but the first three episodes are now on nick.com for free. This last season of the sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender will finish up the story of this universe, and its creators are already signed to do three features for another company which will probably not be linked, according to things I've read on youtube. For animation fans, it doesn't get any better.

I'm going through Season 2 of Arrow right now. I am about 9 or 10 episodes in. If I get through it fast enough, maybe I can still catch the first episodes from Season 3 before they go offline.

I also watched the first three episodes of The Flash. I like it, but it is not as good as Arrow. Not yet, at least.

Ixe October 27th, 2014 09:50 AM

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?

I also recently pounded through Season 2 of Arrow and am now caught on the regular hulu lag of Season 3. I thought Season 2 got pretty epic by the end. Otherwise I'm playing the hulu game for Marvel's Agents of Shield, Flash, and catching Walking Dead online on amc. It appears that if it is related to comic books, I'm watching it. I suspect that I will be seeing a lot of movies over the next few years.

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?

I keep hearing good things about Arrow and Agents of Shield. I just wasn't hooked after the first 2 episodes and never made it back to either of those. However I am watching Flash. Its cheesy and Im honestly not sure why I keep watching it considering the other 2 comic shows didnt keep my attention. Im really enjoying Gotham and the first episode of Constantine has caught my interest. I also got hooked on Numbers and Im now on the last season. Oh and can't forget about American Horror Story Freak Show. That clown!

Ixe October 27th, 2014 11:28 AM

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I caught the pilot of Constantine and have been following Gotham on hulu.

The first solid chunk of Agents of Shield is rough. It doesn't get really good until it syncs up with the plot of Winter Soldier so I'd recommend toughing it out. The second season has been really good so far in my opinion. Arrow was one of those shows that also took a bit to grow on me. It takes a while to build through its seasons and it has its fair share of silliness throughout. The end of seasons 1 and 2 (especially 2) was very epic and made it all worth while in my opinion.

Flash has definitely been a little hokey so far but I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt and stick with it. Gotham, a.k.a Batman Babies, is probably one of those shows that I'll watch through despite the various parts of it that annoy me. I'd prefer if they made it focus a little more on Gordon and stop going out of their way with all the overt references to future Batman villains and whatnot, but I suppose they need to tie it in somehow.

I'm still watching Scorpion. I think I'm only watching because I'm recording it and feel obligated. And because I want so badly for it to be good. But it isn't. It really, really isn't.

Gotham is growing on me. Every episode has been better than the one before it. Not a fan of the way tv feels like it needs to "social justice" me, but the characters are interesting and the stories are good.

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?

I like Flash more than Arrow, I'm only a little more that half way through season 2 of Arrow right now though. AoS has been really good this season, if you are not watching it you are missing out. Starting to lose interest in Gotham, I feel compelled to keep watching it right now but it is not that good/interesting. Constantine had a solid premier episode so I'll keep watching it. The Walking Dead has been at the top of it's game so far, much better than season 4.

For non-comic book related TV, Sleepy Hallow & Sons of Anarchy are at the top of the good list. Stopped watching Scorpion after trying to like it. Still watch the Black List, love the Reddington character but the story suffers from time to time by bad writing. Not sure I like the Castle lost memory storyline but the show itself is still enjoyable. Star Wars Rebels has been pretty good, just wish it was an hour long show instead of 30 minutes though as the 1 hour premier was better then either of the next 2 1/2 hour episodes. After ads, a 22 minutes just doesn't give you much time for story telling. 1/2 shows are better suited for non story driven content like The Big Bang Theory, which has been funny but I don't like her short hair.

I wanted Scorpion to be good. Really liked the premise and the set up. They started losing me about halfway through the first episode. I watched the second and about half of the third and gave up. So disappointing.

Agreed that Gotham isn't good, but not that it isn't interesting. I'm enjoying it despite myself. :-P

Really enjoyed the first 3 seasons of Sopranos, some of the best TV around, season 4 the writing starts to suffer though. Their are still great individual episodes from time to time but the season long story arcs and overall show direction are not as good.

Found Arrow and Flash On Demand. Saw the first Flash so far, and liked it. I enjoy that the father is played by John Wesley Ship, the old TV flash!

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?

I should try to finish the Sopranos. I think I left off in Season 4, so that may be why I stopped. I'll put something in the spoiler for what gave me pause. It's said with extreme vagaries but some people are purists about what they hear.
Spoiler Alert!

If we're talking HBO shows, I'm obligated to mention The Wire, Game of Thrones, and I would even tack on Rome and possibly The Leftovers.

The Wire has a shaky season 2 but it's all important and overall fantastic. I probably don't need to tell people what Game of Thrones is, but Rome was the show HBO had done that made the creators of Game of Thrones believe they could pull it off with them. It's only 2 seasons long and covers Roman History from the fall of the Repulbic to the rise of the Empire with enough liberties taken to make an entertaining narrative. The Leftovers and is done by the same people that did Lost, which is to say that it will keep you intrigued with dangling mysteries that never get answered. It is overall abysmally depressing but with rich characters and great acting that I suspect it will continue to grow on with future seasons. It always has the risk of becoming garbage, but the first season stood well enough on its own in my opinion to recommend to people into that sort of thing.

IAmBatman October 28th, 2014 10:52 AM

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?

The Wire, Rome, and Oz are all on Amazon Prime as well, and will be next on my hit list after The Sopranos.

Even if the Sopranos goes down a bit after season three (I didn't read the spoiler), I'm willing to bet it's still better than most things on TV now.

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?

Love, love Rome. I've watched the series all the way through at least 5 times now and would be happy to watch it again at any time. It really does get better on the second viewing as you then rewatch the early stuff with greater insight as to who the characters are and where their story arc is heading.

The Wire is also a top 5 show all time for me. The way each of the 5 seasons break down different aspects of the city/society yet wrap them all up together is fantastic. One of the few shows that has a great finial episode too.

I'm also a big fan of Deadwood since we are talking about HBO shows from the past. It was canceled without ever getting a chance to wrap things up though.

IAmBatman October 29th, 2014 08:35 AM

'ONLY IN NEW YORK CITY' DEPARTMENT

Here in NYC, my gum dentist gave me a clean bill of health today. Then when we were talking comics and comic movies/TV as we usually do, he mentioned that one of his patients is an actor who just became famous on TV in the last month. He said the guy is so nice that he couldn't be sure who he was until he heard his voice, and then he knew.

Last night on Gotham they repeated one of his lines from the previous show in the opening flashback:
