I've been a strong supporter of scenario play in all the wargames I own. The saying, "we didn't get dressed up for nothing" from Braveheart reminds me that the outcomes from battles should have a purpose whether that is more land, less tax, or retribution for a bruised ego.

Likewise, I like my games to have a theme. When I first played Heroscape with my friends, I was really intrigued by this 'General' concept. I was hoping there would be some way to track wins and losses, show how alliegences between these generals jokeyed for position. I was hoping to see Utgar's seemingly huge grasp conveyed in the game mechanics. In some ways, I guess through shear size of his available army and variation this is true. While in game play, it really doesn't matter.

I've been toying around with the idea of making it matter. Introducing the experience concept from the old Battlemasters game. After a victory, your remaining units receive a +1 to attack and defense....

I sing of warfare and a man at war.
One ripped from his existence,
And one, trying to escape what nature gifted.
For the steward the wars go on with and without,
Time forgotten more than remembered.
The cold arctic of Ibex slows and mellows,
Making a steady reach across what were states,
What were golden emblems, what were…
Tree, grass, root, and bark take back,
What wasn’t ours and yet we took.

After a pause, he remembers.
He builds what lies hidden in the cold.
Kept far from reaching hands and
For the moment… ignored and unchecked.
Clean, a fresh start, almost clinical.
A refuge, a place for those with knowledge,
In a place where its worth makes danger
At least, that’s what they say.
So for us we’ll forget the dark,
And focus on what lights we make for ourselves,
And with a groan for that indignity,
His spirit...

I don't know why everyone plays games like these, I've tried to think of a reason that is all encompassing: escapism, a social activity, and even therapy (better to snuff out a Marro than your boss) to name a few. I know that many of us enjoy building armies, there are those of us who like the challenge and strategy elements of games like these, and some just enjoy the experiences of a creative building story, game play, and the luck involved (That's for all you natural 20-rolling peeps).

I can tell you from my own gaming background, that I grew up in a time when my cousins were the coolest people I knew. They played D&D and I remember sitting at the table, too young to play, but fascinated by the rolling dice, the DM's screen, and the maps, oh the maps! The stories got me all excited and when I was old enough, I wanted to be a part of an adventure. A game like this is fun at differing times in your life... let me explain.

When you are really young, role-playing...

Oh my...

Before Heroscape, I played a lot of Heroclix and I had a pretty successful game adaptation of Battle Cards. If you are unfamiliar with this term, they are similar to glyphs wherein they change a power of a figure/squad usually for the better. For example, a battlecard could increase your bonding or allow you to pick up a combination of units that improved your game. The difference is, it's yours from the beginning of the game unless the card says otherwise.

Condition cards were fun too. Details like, the flow of water (if your figure ended his move in water and the direction was east, your figure moved one or two hexes east...ie. swept away with the current). Rain/fog conditions meant less visibility/range. I've often thought about incorporating condition specific spaces like safe zones/cover or even barbed wire areas.

In my "house rules" way of play... I think I had over 100 or so cards and some condition cards as well. Each player...

Even though a new release is improbable in time for the Christmas holiday and it's unlikely that I'm going to find two boxes of elves and soulborgs at my local department store, I'm still pretty grateful for what I know this holiday season will probably involve:

1. Good food
2. Catching up with my family
3. Gaming with my buds (Heroscape, RIFTS, and maybe StarWars RPG)

My mom makes the most amazing stuffing, I'm bringing green bean casserole and banana pudding (step-dad's fav)

We have an annual tradition where my grandma bakes a delicious pie and then tells us how bad it is (feigning a compliment) whereby my sister usually says, "grandma, you've done it again... you've ruined (Insert Holiday).

Then it's on to catching up... so how's your job? Good. Busy... no time to breathe. Love being home so I don't have to think about it. How's school? Ugh... don't remind me. I have a paper due before Christmas and I only have 20...
