Your build requirements are off for this map. A BFtU only comes with 8 shadow pieces and the instructions call for 12. You may want to add that to your description.

This is a perfectly acceptable build. The exact reason why the bases were made to be black is so they could be used as shadow tiles if desired.
That a cool idea to use the bases without the outcrops ("The exact reason why the bases are made to be black..." etc.) and would not be a problem unless you've glued all your bases to the outcrops in order to more easily find the pieces that go together - LIKE I HAVE! But if you've done that then you've probably also purchaced more then one D&D BftU Master Set - LIKE I HAVE! So that solves the problem of needing more than 8 Shadow Tiles.
