FFC #78 - Basic lessons and epic conclusions

TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry #78

It's been mid-August since my last blog entry, and late June since my last real update, leading the more avid of my followers to perhaps wonder what has become of me and my writing. More likely my fiction endeavors have simply been forgotten, but I'm going to update you anyway.

Ever since I 'stopped' writing, back in July 2020, I've been waiting to say the words 'I'm back' in one of these FFCs.

Technically I did that already at least once, but as it turned out to be largely a false alarm, I'm not counting it.

Throughout the last year+, I've been trying to restart my fiction writing. I got a few stories out, namely Utgar and Valkyrie, and while the former wasn't bad, and the later definitely had some good parts to it, neither really felt like a return to my old writing ways. For the most part, I still couldn't get stories off the ground - they always had some problem, or if they didn't,...

Back in Action – New ARV Contest

Posted September 13th, 2021 at 03:35 AM by truth

What? What? Another ARV contest awakens your curiosity and creativity ... and calls on your willingness to accept a challenge!

It's been more than a minute, or two, but the Architects of the Realms of Valhalla have recovered and we are back with a new contest and a great prize for the best Architect of Valhalla.

This contest comes to you with a rather difficult proposal; those of faint-heart should stop reading now.

We’re calling on all map builders to come up with competitive, tournament worthy maps where you are challenged specifically to build with at least one Marvel expansion. We don't see the Marvel set used too often. Now, we will!

Submissions will be accepted starting on October 4th and will go through November 1st. More information can be found on the ARV Contest Thread.

And last but definitely...

10 Tips to Make Your Maps Not Suck

Recently on the discord server, somebody asked for some noob-friendly tips on how to make maps that are fairly balanced. I consider myself pretty skilled at making maps that don't suck (not an expert in making perfect maps by any stretch), so I put together my top 10 tips to make any map work.

Please note that I'm not saying all great maps follow these guidelines. I'm only saying that if you DO follow these guidelines, I don't think you can make a map that sucks.

Perhaps in the future I'll take some time to revisit some or all of these tips in detail, but for now, here they are:

mediocrefrog's tips for making a map that is at least okay
1. Try to have the highest height at level 4. 3 and 5 can work too but 4 is a safe choice.
2. Make at least two sections that are this height, but make them close enough together that figures can easily threaten multiple from a broad range of the map.
3. Put some glyphs evenly spaced from...
