Myoozik Review: M.I.A./Diplo ~ Piracy Funds Terrorism Vol. 1

Posted August 22nd, 2008 at 06:52 PM by Menchy
This is the first of (hopefully) many music reviews done by me for the community. I'm going to go with the A+ - F ranking system. So without further ado, I present to you, Menchy's Myoozik Review: M.I.A./Diplo's Piracy Funds Terrorism Volume 1.

Artist: M.I.A. and Diplo
Album: Piracy Funds Terrorism Volume 1
Grade: A-

I will start out by saying that I listen to quite a bit of music, and I am certainly not a person who is easily impressed. I can spot generic $%!# a mile away, and there are very VERY few artists whom I respect. M.I.A., however, happens to be one of those few. I was initially impressed by Kala, the first of her albums that I heard, then moreso impressed by Arular, her earlier album. But this, her earliest work, takes the cake by far. This album, originally handed out before the debut of Arular, is everything I love about M.I.A. without anything that I hate about her. I have always been attracted to Maya's originality, catchy dance beats, and the message that her music has. Unfortunatley, in Kala, this was marginally overshadowed by overproduction in songs by Timbaland and others. Piracy Funds Terrorism, however, has none of that. It is by far the rawest, dirtiest M.I.A. in release, and it makes it that much better. She brings messages about third world suffering in true third world style, and her genre twisting style benifits from it. Diplo also does a fantastic job mixing the songs into eachother, leaving the album sounding literally like one song. Don't let that classification fool you though, as there are many many different beats and styles present throughout the album. The guests that M.I.A. and Diplo bring in on the album help bring the style from Ghetto rap to tribal beats to dance hip-hop, and the transitions happen surprisingly smoothly. There are two complaints I have about the album. First of all, it's not available on iTunes, and no store I know carries M.I.A. at all, let alone this little known pre album, meaning downloading it on Limewire was my only option. The other complaint is actually about the music. The beats, while usually catchy, occasionally leave you with an annoying headache and a desire to switch to the next song. Additionally, they do get a bit repetitive, and one or two songs have you thinking "Didn't I already hear this?" Overall, however, the rough around the edges production style, and the talented mixing of the tracks leave this album as a true testament to M.I.A.'s talent as an artist, and her true originality. A-
