Customs and the eternal question of why?

In my last blog I stated that the reason that any good customs creator makes customs is to play them. This isn't quite true, so it's time to expand on that statement.

First off I'll start with myself. There are two reasons why I make customs. The first is to play them, the second is to make a joke. I've only done the second on one occasion, and even then I made sure it was playable.

When I make a custom with the intention of playing it there are a few things to consider. Questions that can and should be answered before you dive into a card. What figure do I have? What do I want it to do? Can it do this without being overpowering or overcomplicated? Will it be fun to play? Will it make others want to play it? These questions are all equally important, and should be taken into consideration before making a custom.

First and foremost you'll need a figure. There's no point to a custom that's psyically impossible to play. You may enjoy making it...

Positive Playtesting.

Posted August 30th, 2010 at 01:41 PM by Chardar
It's no secret. The custom section is my home. Like any good custom maker I make customs because I want to play them. It's a waste of my time to create units that will never get played, it's a waste of the community's time to critique units that will never get played, and it's a waste of the site's limited space to post units that will never get played. So it's important to limit this waste.

Usually it's pretty easy to distingiush between a custom that has been well thought throught and tested and those that have... not. Most of the time if a unit is not well thought through, it won't get much attention from the general community. This isn't that they don't care. This means that your custom has an inherent flaw, and they are being polite by not pointing it out. Usually if you have waited a few days and have recieved no feedback on your unit it's time to revise your unit, repost it after you think it has been improved, and try again. Don't keep creating new, untested customs...

An end to newbness. A story of regret.

Posted August 26th, 2010 at 07:20 PM by Chardar
A lot of things happened these past few weeks. I got my second order marker, posted my 1000th post, got a proper game room, and finally became a site supporter. With so much happening I believe that I have finally moved out of the "newb" zone, at least into "semi-newb". I still have a lot to learn, but at the same time I've learned a lot.

After realizing this I went back and reread some of my first posts. To be honest I was shocked. The question "did I really write that?" came up more times than I care to admit. I realize that this is normal, and every scaper has those moments at some point or another, but I can't help thinking that I could have done better. If I had known then what I know now I might have avoided those moments.

Of course there was also some excitement. The fact that I do know better and can avoid making those mistakes again. Maybe that's why there is a newb stage. Every post and response in that stage helps to...
