Year in Review

Posted July 6th, 2008 at 12:26 PM by Jexik
So, I've now been playing Heroscape for just over a year, and I've been on this site pretty much from the day I played my first game.

Needless to say, I've played a lot more games since then, and started probably more threads than I should have. This community is great, and is a lot of what brings me back day after day, and continuing to play this game.

Right around GenCon of last year, I became really interested in competitive play. I scoured the battle reports and Joe's power rankings. Based on that, and my own play experience, I wrote that first order marker article. That one has even made it into the latest codex.

Most people probably don't know that I went on to write four more. OM II was a general survey of in-game order marker use, OM III was about unit design and what I felt were the holes in current units, OM IV was about how the roles can change based on a variety of factors. I even made something called OM V which asked whether or not defense is what wins 'scape championships.

In October, National Heroscape Day 2007, I was able to actually participate in a tournament. Shortly after, I proclaimed that Iowa Rocks, and got in some debates about whether or not the AE should count towards the starting zone. Apparently the jury was already out on that one, so I was just blowing hot air. I played in a MN tourney the following January, going a personal best 4-1. Near Chicago, I finally went to a tournament within an hour's driving distance. Then in Austin, MN, I played in yet another tourney, in which I really came to appreciate the power of the 4th Massachusetts Line (and Knights of Weston) yet again. I'm now 0-4 against that build, but 1-1 against Q9 in tournaments.

In the end, I've decided that I just like tournament play. I've subtly tried to turn people to my cause, but people still do their own thing.

I got interested in the Unit Strategy Reviews, and started off with one about the Omnicron Snipers. By far my favorite of the ones that I've written is the one on Nilfheim. I estimate that I've played at least 40-50 games with him, since he is likely my favorite figure (although Krug is a close second).

I was also somehow nominated to become a BoV judge. I'm still not quite sure how that happened. I look for unit balance and fun play moreso than aesthetics. I also hate wasted terrain. I forget who said it, but there's a saying in academia that people write 10 page essays when they don't have time to write a 5 page essay. Less is more.

Here's to another year,
