’Scaper of the Month
LordVenoc
Author: Quozl

We've had some technical issues recently since the site went down so this is a bit late but this month we bring you the incredible frenzy master, Lord Venoc!

PROFILE

Who are you really?
I’ve had a ridiculous amount of nicknames over the years. So while I might say something like my friends call me David, the reality is most of them don’t.

How old are you?
Just a boring 26.

What is your occupation?
I’m a mental health counselor, working primarily with teenagers.

What are other games you enjoy and why?
Oooh. I could go on a while. Board/card games-wise, I love me some Munchkin, Smash Up, DC Deck-Building, Castle Panic, Starcraft: The Board Game, Portal: The Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game, and a whole lot more. I play in a weekly D&D group as well, and that’s been going strong for like ... 3 years now? Going on 4 in just a few months.

Video games has a lot as well, but some notable ones: Fire Emblem, Zelda, StarCraft, Smash, and Fallout would be some favorite franchises. Tons of other standalone-ish ones, like Injustice and Spider-Man.

What other interests do you have?
Well, I’m a scuba diver, a moviegoer, and a obviously a bit of a gamer. I do a lot of comic reading and some show bingeing here and there. I like to pepper in some continued learning and reading for my job as well when I can.

HEROSCAPE

When and how did you get into Heroscape?
I first got a copy for Christmas when I was ... like 11 or so? I know I got it the year it was released. I was really into an old board game HeroQuest at the time, and my parents got me Heroscape in the hopes they might function together I believe. Lo and behold, still spending on it, years and years later. I was slow getting into it, as I think when I was a kid I was nervous about selling it to other teens, but I think I’ve yet to get someone to try it and them not like it.

C3G: what got you started?
A little tough to remember accurately ... I jumped in somewhere around 2012, I think, when I brought ’Scape with me to college. Friends liked the game, but they tended to get more enjoyment out of the Marvel master set figures than classic ’Scape. Lo and behold, I soon stumbled upon C3G. It was a big hit and led to tons of games all year. Once I finished college and went to grad school, I tried to jump in more. Failed miserably. Once grad school ended, I thought I’d A) have the time and focus to really commit to helping, and B) had waited long enough for people to forget my prior failure.

Well, not really on the second one.

Favorite unit (official/custom):
Original ’Scape: Contrary to my username, I’d have to give it to Nilfheim or Sonlen. Love the both of them, and they were probably some of my most drafted units back when I played classic much.

C3G: A terribly difficult call indeed, as there are so many great ones, and this is where most of my play happens. I’ll rattle off a couple, because I’m a cheater sometimes.

Captain Marvel (Shazam): I’m a sucker for the Big Red Cheese. I love him as a unit, and he functions perfectly fine solo. Plus, I may or may not be actively building up his world.

Roy Harper: Yes, this is a character and not a design. But I like all his designs a whole lot, and many C3Gers can attest to my adoration of Roy and utter detest of the trucker hat.

Hourman and Liberty Belle: This combo is great, and a lot of fun to play together. Has led to many builds from my friends and I affectionately dubbed “Date Night.”

Michael Myers: Love this design for reasons that will be explained below.

Describe your favorite HeroScape moment.
Gameplay-wise, this might be a bit of recency bias, as we’ve had a lot of great moments over the years. Michael Myers coming back to life so that he can sneak up and stab Gorilla Grodd in the back, only to be descended upon and shredded by a horde of monkeys, is just a beautiful and fun moment.

Is there anything you would change about the game (unit, rule, mechanic, etc.)?
Taelord still costs too much. So does Zod, but I think we’re fixing that. I love the simplicity, so I think most changes I’d think of would increase complexity in a negative way.

What is your favorite aspect of HeroScape?
Well, I love the fact that I’ve been a part of this community for what is now fast approaching half my life. Seeing it survive and thrive off the passion of fans has been great. It’s amazing to me the fun and joy that I’ve seen from people playing the game even years after it was discontinued. It’s a simple battle of all time that is easy to get into and have a blast with.

COMMUNITY

Favorite experience as part of C3G:
I genuinely shrieked in joy when I saw Peter Stanchek’s finished card. Not only was it my first C3G design, but it also felt awesome having broken ground into a new universe for C3G. In that moment, I knew I was on board for the long haul with this.

Can you tell us the story behind your username?
I started over in Curse of Ne-Gok-Sa ... back in 2007, which is hard to believe. I think I might have like the third most games played? Which is absolutely hard to believe, as I think I took a break during undergrad. I couldn’t remotely tell you how I stumbled upon CoN, other than that I know I liked the game Mafia back then. I think winning my second game as a Zaravi got me hooked as a 14 year old.

Can you tell us the story behind your title?
The title came around after I took over the C3G books and a bad joke based on my username led to a better joke from someone else, and thus: “Book Wyrm.” Feels more fitting when the official CoNs I’ve run have both been set in a library.

Can you tell us how you’ve gotten to where you are now in the community?
Probably sheer will? I just never left really, or I guess came back after a break. Not really anything to it.

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
The community is wonderful here. It’s awesome to see people genuinely excited when people who had maybe vanished show back up. Even beyond that, I’ve seen people show such awesome care and concern for one another.

Is there any member of Heroscapers.com you’d really like to play against?
Pretty much any C3G folks. I’d probably give special credit to japes, johnny139, and Ronin. They get bonus points for having read/being willing to read some Valiant as I get that universe rolling.

LIE DETECTOR
Three Truths And A Lie
  • I once was hospitalized for bronchitis in Ecuador for a single night.
  • I once fell 12 feet off a wall on my head onto gravel and wound up with just one cut, less than an inch long.
  • I once accidentally bought a horse on vacation in college.
  • I once had to be fed headfirst through the screened window of my parents’ van when they keys were locked inside.

Last month’s lie:
  • I’ve never seen the Mr. Nobody film with Jared Leto.
  • At the time of writing this, I’ve currently gone 3 days straight eating nothing but Kraft Mac & Cheese.
  • Despite living in Georgia my whole life, I despise sweet tea.
  • Every roommate I’ve ever lived with (outside of my family) was born outside of the United States.

THREE FUN FAVORITES

Favorite movie genre and movie:
While I love a good drama, I definitely lean more toward action for most of my viewing. I don’t think I can fairly say any movie other than Shazam! as my favorite. I saw the thing 8 times in theaters. Clearly, it is at a special level in my life.

Favorite book genre and book:
Sci-fi wins out for me. To cheat a bit, I loved the book Saint by Ted Dekker as a teen. The intensity of the book helped reignite a passion for reading I’d lost in middle school. Also have to give some credit to the series Animorphs, as I devoured that series as a kid. Flew through it at a ludicrous rate, and loved every minute of it. Loved it so much I went and bought it as an adult, years after it ended.

Favorite song genre and song:
I just get on song kicks randomly. “Shut Up and Dance” has gotten a whole lot of repeats over the years, so probably worth mentioning.

CLOSING

What message do you have for the ’Scaper community?
Stay strong folks! It’s awesome to see this game continue so long!

Whom do you pick for the next ’Scaper of the Month?
I suppose I’ll be responsible for breaking the chain of C3Gers and I’ll pass the buck over to scorpiusx over in the CoN section.

There's a non-C3G interview awaiting
after July, Lord, after July”*

Great interview! We just need to get the trucker hat emoji ported over to the main site so it can further torment you.

*This is possibly the cheesiest thing I’ve ever written

That hat is still the worst. Stop the torture.

I do DM a fair amount. Have been weekly D&Ding with a group of friends from college online for like...five or six years now.
