Rats Overrun

Posted November 23rd, 2020 at 09:46 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I had been putting off this game for a while. I'm not sure why.

It's my solo game, we call it a big game, since it involves many factions and plays for months.

The rat men were an upstart faction, discovered by the Templars as they explored the area around their base. Our rules spawn random factions with random amounts of points at bases found through exploring. The Templars only had a small force and encountered a mass of rats and withdrew.

I like all the factions involved in this game. I've always been a Templar fan. York is one of the first custom factions I made and I have recently been adding to it. And who doesn't like rat men? They are always a problem to deal with but there's something charismatic about them.

York was also a randomly spawned base, but it had been overrun by rats and captured. The Templars were allied with York, so the guys in white came to the rescue. Combined- the remnant forces of York, 100 points,...

FFC #61 - Finally, something positive

Posted November 20th, 2020 at 02:46 PM by TGRF
TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry #61

Since being forced some five-odd months ago to pause my writing and take a much needed long look at certain things, I've gone what feels like lightyears forwards in my understanding of writing. I've outlined much of what I've learned already, so I won't go back over it here.

In my last FFC, I was coming to realize that despite everything I had learned (and perhaps partially because of it), my writing was suffering. As far back as Ragnak, my inability to craft the middle of a story had surfaced, and it has stuck with me ever since, surfacing in basically everything I've written.

That's always been a problem. It's been THE problem in fact, the single largest problem, the biggest cause of failed drafts and scrapped stories. Nothing has destroyed as many stories as that problem has.

So you can imagine my elation when I finally figured out what's causing it, and better yet, how I can start...

FFC #60 - Up and back down - what has happened?

Posted November 12th, 2020 at 01:48 PM by TGRF
TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry #60

A few days ago, I was visited by a desire to scrutinize my fan fiction folders. Not being one to deny what was so clearly an invitation to find something wrong with my writing, I obliged.

On my computer, under the massive 'Heroscape' folder, there is a fan fiction folder. Within this ancient and vast collection are various subfolders, one for each fan fiction I have written - or have tried to write. There are a lot of them. But, as I had suspected, there was a pattern.

One of the first folders was dedicated to my first forray into the wonderful world of writing, the original Valhalla Reborn. I wrote chapter to chapter, with no plan or goal in mind.

The next folder is for The Quest for Valhalla, where I first tried my hand at plotting and planning in advance (which in this instance meant jotting down a ton of events and battles with unchanging characters). Sequels quickly followed, with...

Can't Catch Me!

Posted November 4th, 2020 at 12:27 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
My son has just designed his first virtual army in our email Sylvano-scape game. He lives in a small apartment and doesn’t have a lot of stuff. He has no miniatures with him. In the past he’s moved a bit and cut his belongings down accordingly.

When we started playing email games I’d send him faction lists so he could pick his armies. Growing up he spent years making custom figures with me and knows a lot of our pointing formulas by heart. So he sat down and whipped up a mercenary army- The Red Company- to play in our game.

I highly approve. I love the heroes and the implied back stories. He did some interesting things. The Red Company archers have seven range and five move, making them top of the line human ranged fighters. But my son also gave them melee penalty one and setup. The melee penalty robs them of an attack and defense dice in hand to hand. Setup means it takes them a full attack turn to prepare to fire after moving, so when they move they can’t...
