Storm Shadow... take 3...

Posted October 1st, 2010 at 02:01 AM by hextr1p
Ever since long time member Annerios was gracious enough to send me his custom Storm Shadow figure, I've been trying to design a card that looked worthy enough to accompany the miniature during game play. You can look back here in my blog to see a couple different cards I put together. But I was never really happy with them visually...

... until now.

Using the Marvel card template I put together a while back, I decided to pay homage to the license which holds a special place in my heart: G.I. Joe. During my youth, I spent hours upon hours upon hours playing with the action figures, vehicles, and battle stations from Hasbro, reading the Marvel comics, and watching the cartoons after school. So why not just place Storm Shadow into a themed card which suited him?!

I based the colors off of the classic Cobra palette, using shades taken directly from an illustration of Cobra Commander. The red outline is actually a bleed line, so I can cut the card down to match the size of the official cards.

The background behind the figure, I decided to keep a little generic as homage to the old school Hasbro packaging which had an illustration of each character in front of some explosion. But I included the Cobra logo because it just worked well as a nice design element, looking cool while also helping to balance everything together visually.

So yes, I'm pretty happy with it. But let me know what you think!

TCGLKN: Thanks! I use Photoshop to put all of my images together. I do lurves me some Photoshop. The card image is then saved and placed in InDesign. There, the text for the stats and abilities are placed so they come out nice n' crisp when printing.

ANNERIOS: I'll email you a printable PDF of the card. I have an email address of yours, but not sure it's still valid. Could you message me your email?

CAV: Thanks! Yeah, back when Annerios offered a fig of my choice from his army of customs, I was REALLY torn between this one and his Snake Eyes mod. I believe he'd done two Snake Eyes figs, using the same design but with different accessories. I know R˙chean has one of them. But 'G.I. JOE' is a license I'd always hoped Hasbro would have introduced to the Heroscape system, even if only as a special edition small expansion set.

Vipers as Commons, Cobra Comander, Destroy (with a Hawthorne/Marku mechanic), Zartan...

Duke, Breaker, Flash, Gungho, Snake Eyes, Scarlet...

Yeah, I'd be way in with that

I know! And they could have taken a similar approach with the G.I. Joe set as they did with the Marvel characters: use the more classic characters who were there from the beginning, but sculpted and painted in their current incarnation in the 'Joe universe.

I'd also imagine the transition of that license into the Heroscape universe would have been easier to do, being that Hasbro has more creative control with 'G.I. Joe' then they do with other licenses like 'Marvel' and 'Star Wars.'

Great looking card, hextr1p! Recurve Bow Special Attack needs some kind of ability aside from just range and damage, though.

Nice work! I've always been a fan of GI Joe. This peice was really nostalgic for me. A limited edition Joe/Heroscape set would be awesome, maybe with a proof of purchase mail in for a promo Zartan. Just like the old days of Joe. AAhhh memories.

Thanks hextr1p.

I love the custom and the power concepts behind it... but I thought special attacks had to have a secondary ability

Why would it have to? There is no custom creation ruleset, so there is no 'have to' in customs.

SD: Yeah, someone mentioned this in an image comment, and I'm going back and forth a bit on what to do. His solution was a good one, but we'll see. I don't think a Special Attack necessarily HAS to have an ability appended with it, in the the 'special' about this attack is that it's ranged. But we'll see.

CLANCAMPBELL: Thanks! And YES! The proof-of-purchase mail-in orders were something I always jumped at! I remember ording Duke that way before he was a standard release, as well as the hooded Cobra Commander. Seriously, I think Hasbro could have easily done something similar with a Heroscape release. Like making Nerak or Sir Hawthorne available that way back when everyone was pining for them.

KAIYU: Technically, the secondary ability is allowing the unit a ranged attack.

CAV: Exactly. I'm just pushing the limits of creativity!! Actually, it's a nod to Annerios' original version of the custom card he designed for this unit.

FLAMESLAYER: If you want, I do have a PDF version of this file for print if you'd like me to email it to you.

GLADITOR: Exactly! Those Cobra colors not only look cool together, complete with the Cobra logo, but they're also a throwback to a lot of great memories I have of my youth.
