FFC #99 - (Late) December Update

TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry #99

I've put off writing this update, because honestly there isn't much to tell. However, since we're now into January, it's time for an update on how Dilmir 4 is progressing, and also where I stand with novels and other future writing projects.

Dilmir 4
Dilmir 4 is continuing in the outline phase, which is basically what discovery writers would call 'writing the first draft'. This is something I could potentially do very quickly, probably getting the whole thing done in a week or two.

I'm still not 100% sure why I can't seem to make myself do that, but my working theory is that once the story is more or less designed, I lose interest for going back over it and whacking out miniscule details. Which is about 50% of the outlining phase.

For this reason, progress has been slow. I'm getting around a chapter outlined a day if I'm lucky. Some days go by with no work done at all. I'm trying to think of ways I can force myself to stick with it, but so far, nothing is really working.

Despite that, progress is continuing. I'm about halfway through the outline, and optimistic that the mounting pace in the second half will keep me more focused. If my current pace continues, the story should be released sometime during February, possibly later in the month. If my pace increases, it could be earlier in the month. A January release date doesn't seem very likely at this point.

Novels
Several years have been spent coming up with - and subsequently discarding - ideas for my novels. I think now (as admittedly I have many times before) that I at last have the right setting, which means I can start to focus on plots and characters.

If I were to finish Dilmir today, I could likely easily move right into my first novel, and at least get a basic idea of the plot down. Some crucial pieces still need to fall into place before that can happen: most notably I need to determine exactly what the main character arc would be, since that's what the entire story is built around. Until I do that, things will remain in my head.

Future Fan Fiction
As I've said before, the existence of any future fan fiction will depend on where I'm at with my novels once Dilmir 4 is finished. If I were to finish today, I could probably shift focus to my novels for a time, but I could also very easily go back to fan fiction while I build the world of my novels. Or I might simply develop two stories at once - novels and fan fiction. Right now it's all within the realm of possibility.

As to what any future fan fiction might be, that I don't know. Out of everything I've written, there are certain things which keep pulling me back to them. These things are the prison setting on Isadora I made for Dan in HiS, the various plots I made when attempting to come up with a vampire story, and the desert setting I created when I wrote Valkyrie, my tale of Utgar. Those might play a part in any future tales, or I might just go for something completely new. At this point I can't say.

That is the current state of things. Dilmir 4 progress will continue, novels will continue to get more developed as long as the setting holds, and future fan fiction ideas will swim around in the back of my mind.

I'll see you when something comes to fruition. Until then, keep 'Scaping.

Thanks @TheAverageFan Your comments really do keep me going.

An updated timeline: Dilmir 4 looks to be around 21 chapters long maximum, 14 of which are outlined. At my present rate of a chapter a day, I should finish outlining by next Wednesday, and be able to go straight into writing. If I can also write a chapter a day (which I usually can), writing will take 3 weeks. Add an extra week or less for proofreading and I'd put the release date around February 15.
