Storage Obsession Pt 1: The Terrain

Posted January 25th, 2009 at 09:59 PM by bunjee
I have this thing for making things fit. When things clearly fit into a category, if I can get it all together in one place, I just have to do it. This compulsion that Elstree and I share led to “The Brick”

Many people have asked for instructions on how to assemble the brick, and I finally put them together. They are available in the Downloads section at this link.

My space has often been limited, and I really wasn't up to going out to the garage to get my Heroscape every time I wanted to play. I just can't bring myself to toss it all loose in a bin when it stacks so nicely. By keeping the terrain compact, we are able to fit more in to smaller spaces. My most impressive feat was this setup:

It is a 16qt Sterilite drawer (out of the frame, and they've changed the style a little) that contains:
1 Rise of the Valkyrie
1 Road to the Forgotten Forest
1 Volcarren Wasteland
1 Thaelenk Tundra
(terrain only, no miniatures)
It is more difficult to get it all in than it is worth, so the Volcarren Wasteland got kicked out.

Later we came across a handy rolling drawer set at a thrift store. This model has been discontinued, which is too bad because the combination of 2 deep drawers and three shallow drawers works very well for Heroscape.

That drawer set holds:
2 Rise of the Valkyrie
1 Marvel
1 Swarm of the Marro
2 Road to the Forgotten Forest
2 Volcarren Wasteland
1 Thaelenk Tundra
2 Ticalla Jungle

This is a very manageable package to take to game days when we don't need to bring our entire collection of terrain. Sadly, the Fortress of the Archkyrie is so bulky that it has to live in a separate drawer (same as the Sterilite above) 2 of them fit into the Sterilite drawer pretty easily. We have the bulk of our terrain in the 16qt Sterilite drawers.

Next entry discussing figure storage coming soon.

Thanks for posting "the brick", bunjee. I remember I made at least 5 of those at GC last year, then my dad made a few by himself too. I'm downloading and printing it right now.

Other storage ideas look great, too!

Yes, thank you very much! I'm looking forward to the figure storage. I have a nice storage system for my figures already, but it's beginning to get small.

The "brick" is a nice idea. I've also got a similar 7-drawer cart (I keep figures and some terrain in there) and a medium sized under-the-bed style tub which holds the bulk of my terrain.

I have that exact same rolling (out of print) Sterilite drawer. (Got it at a garage sale for $5; had to glue one cracked piece.) I love the clear glass. (I know the fuzzy glass that they use now is suppose to be protective or something, but I love being able to actually look at my figures, which is what I use it for, well, for about half of my figures, I guess. All but the very largest figures fit--even Grimnak fits, just barely...) Anyhow, crazy coincidence...

Wow, thats actually how I store my HS. Well, not in the drawers, but in individual plastic boxes. Cool idea btw.

I have reorganized my Master sets into "Bricks" and it has helped. Great Idea. I have a similar banded "brick" for my VW sets.

Hmm. I suppose I could work out directions for the other bricks we have. The snow does ok, as does RttFF. Volcarren is a bit of a hack, same with SotM, though we have one that works ok.

I sure wish that the ratios had been as sensible in SotM as in RotV.

I brick the VWs into a 7 hex shaped stack when I have to brick them (i.e. for this weekends TempleCon)

I hope you have a permit for moving those bricks into my state. Smugglers.

This weekend, I experimented with terrain and created a VW brick, and a Marvel brick. With the Marvel brick, I can fit two Marvelscapes into one Plastic bin for a completely portable game.

From a tournament standpoint, the thing I like about the bricks is that it makes set-up very easy. "Lessee...for this map you'll need this brick here [thunk], this stack of road [chuck], and these trees [whunk-whunk-whunk-whunk-WHUNK]." Any unused pieces go back in the drawer that the brick came from, along with the build instructions, and the drawer goes under the table.
