W@HS November 5th 2010

Since he joined the site Mojobang has been creating some of the most amazing custom terrain that has ever graced this site. Probably the best since the days of Cupidsart and Leifkicker, and this piece is no exception. I could ramble on and on about mojobang's work, but it speaks for itself.

W@HS Exclusive interview with C3G lead designer IAmBatman, part 2.

For anyone who missed it you can check out part one of the interview here.

3. The C3G releases some of it's units in waves. How do you choose which units go in waves and which units are created by themselves? Was there ever a unit that you wanted to be placed in a wave that didn't make the cut?

There was a bit of a groping in the dark phase where we were finding our way, but all C3G Units are actually placed in Waves at this point (see the C3G Books of Index for more on that!). That said, right now some are designed for specific waves in the private Inner Sanctum threads by C3G Heroes and some are designed as public designs (two at a time) and then placed into "exclusive" boosters later on where the theme of the booster fits the projects created recently rather than the units being created for a specific booster.
The reason we do things this way is that Allies and Sidekicks help out immensely with playtesting and design but are not voting members and do not automatically get to start designs whenever they want. By allowing Allies and Sidekicks to earn points towards the start of public designs, we're able to reward them for their efforts. As part of this, though, we don't want to overly restrict what designs they can start or dictate them to the designers (people don't like being told what to design by the group - this is something we learned and adapted to in the early going. It's important to be able to design something you're excited about and have ideas for if you're going to take it all the way through the process). So, sometimes you have the luxury of being able to slowly assemble waves in private and sometimes you have to assemble the waves around what people feel like making in public.

4. Not every C3G unit is designed in the public forums. Do you have something to hide? Or is it just to build anticipation for the next release?

We have everything to hide.
No, seriously though, I think the advent of the Inner Sanctum for the C3G has been one of the greatest things to ever happen to us. Really, both productivity and morale has skyrocketed since Truth and the Admins (shout out to Aldin here) allowed us to make this change.
At this point most of our designs are done in private. We're sitting on about 15 completed designs in the Inner Sanctum that haven't been seen by more than a handful of Guild members, and have more than other 30 designs currently at some point in the process.
The fact is, when the "World's Finest" set released and then the "X-Men" set followed up we got a ton of participation in the C3G threads and forum. A ton. While the project was getting increased attention there was also an interest in expanding our scope. It became next to impossible for C3G Heroes (voting members) to follow everything that was going on and sift through all the conversation and thread hijacks to have productive conversations. We had to do something and going private (something that works very well for what I consider the most official-like custom project on the site, the Battlefields of Valhalla) worked out very well.
But using this closely held information does have other benefits as well. It lets us build a little more excitement for things (if you see something go through the whole process, the release isn't quite as exciting as if you get it all at once - and your reactions aren't as rewarding to the people who worked hard on them). It also lets those of us privy to the information have that privilege as a reward and motivating factor for all of our hard work. Once you're in the Inner Sanctum, you're going to work hard to stay there. If playtesting means you get a sneak peak at a character you love, you're going to fight to get that playtest.

5. There's a lot of C3G units and even more army possibilities. What is your favorite of all the currently released C3G units, and what C3G army would you recommend for the general community to play first?

One thing I love about C3G armies is that we really strove to put the Hero back in SuperHeroscape. Squads do all right still, but they don't dominate the same way they do in Valhalla. A bit of a pet project of mine is factions and the creation of all hero factions. So my favorite currently released C3G unit is actually a guy who acts as the keystone for one of the most competitive all hero factional armies around - Professor X. He borrows a bit from the official Ulginesh card to act as the building block for an incredibly flexible, tactical, and powerful classic X-Men army at 1,000 points. So Professor X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Angel (use him to carry and protect Xavier!), Iceman, and Beast rank as the one army I most consider a "must try" for all C3G fans! I only hope people find the Fantastic Four to be as much fun!
But if you want an army to try first, I'd say keep it simple and old school and don't overwhelm yourself with anything too complex. Go with C3G Superman and Batman. They're called the "World's Finest" for a reason, right? Plus, I am Batman after all ...

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to blather on! I hope you've enjoyed my answers as much as I've enjoyed typing them up.
Oh, and if you are interested in becoming part of the C3G, click here. And then you'll probably want to click here ...

Cheers,
Bats

Once again we'd like to thank IAmBatman and the rest of the C3G for taking the time out of their busy schedules to talk to us. If you haven't yet you owe it to yourself and them to check out some of their work. Thanks again!

The end of an era.

Longtime writer of W@HS Rym has decided to retire from writing W@HS articles. He has been writing these for a long time now, and we have all enjoyed his work. Without him and the rest of the W@HS team this site wouldn't have been nearly as much fun as it is. Because of him W@HS has become an important part of the site, one which I think we all enjoy. We wish him the very best with his well deserved retirement. I will do my best to live up to his legacy. W@HS will continue, and I hope that you will all help me with your nominations and submissions. Thanks.

Chardar.

Thanks for the timely info both to IAmBatman and the interviewer. With decisions to be made now after the cancellation notice, it will help with questions of who will be doing what, in charge of what, and what all...

Good job Chardar. I think you have some good stuff to sift through for next weeks edition like the C3V and the Send a Hex petition.

Always a great read, and always something cool to look forward to. I don't frequent as much of this site as I have in the past. So to have a resource like W@HS offer a small summation of recent news and highlights is great! So thanks to all the staff, both past and present, who take of their own free time to make this happen as often as they do.

@sabreking6: If doing so helps you retain interest in the game, then yes, Heroscape would remain alive. Really, the decision to keep playing or remain invested in something 'officially' canceled is your own. And how you go about doing so in order to truly hold the greatest interest would apply specifically to you. So do what you can to keep playing. And while doing so, share that here. Perhaps your ideas will spark others in someone esle, helping the game to remain alive for them, too.
