Wo-Sa-Ga Desktop Creature

The Inspiration:
For a long time I wanted to remake the watchful dragon optical illusion I found on Grand-Illusions.com but I didn’t know what I wanted to do with it. And, some time ago my buddy Deadmaxx made a series of great 3D gag images called “My Pet Hivelord” which featured everyone’s favorite Hivelord, Wo-Sa-Ga. For the past few days I’ve been combining these two ideas to make my own “pet Hivelord.”

The Illusion:
Although I’ve redesigned the original dragon illusion to look like Wo-Sa-Ga, the effect is still the same. When you cover one eye and look at the creature, moving your head from side to side, up and down, etc., the creature seems to follow your every movement. The illusion is quite eerie. And, while the orginal dragon was kind of cute, Wo-Sa-Ga is a little more sinister looking. (Or, at least, as sinister as a Wobble-Head™ can be.)

The secret of the illusion is this – the face is actually inversed. When you look at the creature with one of your eyes closed or covered your brain doesn’t get the depth-perception data it needs and assumes, wrongly, the shape is normal (i.e. convex) when in fact it’s concave.

The Inception:
After making a number of sketches of the character, mainly of the head, I had a good idea where to start. I began with recreating the design and layout of the original. The base of the creature is basically the same shape as the original dragon illusion; the head however, was a real, well, headache.

A Quick Sketch

The hardest part was getting its (is Wo-Sa-Ga a he or a she?) spikes right. It’s hard to put spikes on top of a head when the top of the head faces the floor.

The hand drawing was then scanned and cleaned up in the computer and later digitally painted. I had a lot of fun putting in all the final touches to build instructions: dotted fold lines, a cool technical-drawing font for the directions, and the construction diagram.

Technical Construction Diagram

Although the diagram looks like I’d have to have designed it with some kind of 3D drawing software, it was actually done the easy way. I had printed out a prototype to make sure the design was working. I simply photographed that prototype (from the rear) and used my graphics program to trace over the photograph. Tada! Instant 3D construction diagram.

The Inovation:
Overall, I’m very satisfied with the final product and I think you will be too. Check it out let me know what you think. Post your comments here or in my map thread (where I keep all my other goodies). Enjoy!

Thanks for the positive feedback, fellas!

@MegaSilver: No. Sorry. If I spend anymore time making more of these my wife will kill me.

( Hmmm. Four heads. Hmmm.)

I t would be funny if you made WSG that had lip stick and eye shadow on it. The Hivelord must look pretty for his Hive Kingdom.
