This is a battle summary for the game Heroes of ‘Scape.

Battle 4: Ambush in the Tundra

After the embarrassing failure in the desert, the Heroes venture north. They set up camp for the night in a sight of what appears to be an old ruin near a glacier.

An insight on the game itself: I let the players of the Heroes create this portion of the map, since it was “their” encampment after all, and I built the rest of the map around what they built, filling in the monsters afterwards.

A Human Monk, a Human Viking Warrior, a Human Divine Wizard, and a Human Samurai Archer were keeping warm around the fire when they hear the sound of angry growls behind them

As the Heroes look across the frozen wasteland they can see a pack of Dzu-Teh waiting to strike, a White Wylrming looking for a tasty human treat, and a Greater Ice looming over his domain. Amidst some ruins a band of Vikings are looking to plunder the weary travelers.

To make matters worse, a squadron of Kyrie stand in waiting, blocking their only escape route, their only chance is to stay and fight.

Not knowing of how adept the Dzu-Teh are while traversing glaciers, the Heroes are caught by surprise as the giant beasts leap in front of them and begin their assault. One of the Dzu-Teh swings his mighty club down on the Monk, but he is far too agile for the lumbering beast, and dodges the attack. The Monk doesn’t hesitate to take the Dzu-Teh down. The Viking springs into action and eliminates the second Dzu-Teh. The Samuari Archer tries to make a shot at the third, but the creatures is nearly invisible with the glacial terrain as its backdrop. With little choice, the samurai engages the last Dzu-Teh, and with a quick slash of his sword, takes the beast down.

The Tarn Viking Warriors begin their charge along the glacial path.

The White Wyrmling hops out from behind an ice pillar, launching shards of ice and snow from his mouth. The Samurai archer, barely dodging the strike, returns fire, piercing the Wyrmling through the chest with a well-placed arrow.

The Viking Warriors arrive at the Heroes camp and begin their attack. In the skirmish, the Monk in injured, but the Cleric is quick to make sure the Monk is fully rejuvenated.

The Viking Hero has no tolerance for wannabes

Eldgrim the Viking Champion, overextends himself to try and land a hit on the Viking Hero, but the he is far too tough and easily deflects the strike. The party is quick to dispatch the self-injured Eldgrim.

While the Heroes were busy with the Viking Warriors, the Greater Ice Elemental dauntlessly closes in on the Heroes, and the Heroes soon found the Elemental standing in their midst. “Hold it off!” the Monk shouts to the Viking, and the Viking wastes no time to rush in and try to hold down its position.

While the Viking tries to stave off the attack of the Ice Elemental, Thorgrim arrives in the Heroes’ camp. Attacks are exchanged in both battles.

With Thorgrim’s excellent defense and the Monk’s amazing agility, the fight with the last Viking endures. However, even the tough Viking Hero is no match for the hard hits and piercing ice spikes of the Ice Elemental, and the Viking Hero is taken down.

The death seems to be in vain, because the Ice Elemental appears to have no intention of moving away from his position. “It appears the creature is only here to defend its territory,” the Samurai deduces, “as long as we don’t make it angry it’ll probably just stay there.” The Samurai is right, and the Ice Elemental remains in its position, keeping at least one foot on the nearby snow.

While being sure to glance back every now and then to make sure the Ice Elemental doesn’t make an approach, the Heroes finish off Thorgrim.

The Heroes decide to leave the Greater Ice Elemental be, and head towards the mountain pass. Seeing that the Heroes are advancing on their position, the Kyrie mobilize for the first time.

The Heroes decide to hold their position on the cliff side as the Kyrie make their slow and daunting approach. The Samurai tries and shoot the Kyrie down before they can get to them, but their shields easily deflect his arrows. The Kyrie, with their mighty wings, fly over the gap and get the first strike on the Heroes, eliminating the Samurai almost immediately.

The Cleric soon follows…

Attack after attack, the Monk tries his best to stand against the Kyrie, but their defense is too tight to penetrate. The Sentinels desperately try and injure the Monk as well, but his agility is too quick for their mighty hammers. The Monk finally catches an opening on a sentinel standing below him, and gives him a finishing blow…

…but he is still no match for the Kyrie army, and the Monk is destroyed.

Instead of choosing to venture deeper into the Tundra, the Heroes decided to follow the mountain path the Kyrie were guarding. Next time…
