Scaper of the Month - April 2020

Posted April 22nd, 2020 at 02:28 PM by HS Codex

’Scaper of the Month
Necroblade
Author: quozl

He’s been in C3G, C3V, and the new AoTP project. Meet the newest Scaper of the Month: Necroblade!

PROFILE

Who are you really?
I am Iron Man.

Actually, my name is Jacob. Just somebody who loves board games.

How old are you?
33

What is your occupation?
Boring. Shipping/receiving (for the moment). Currently working with friends who plan to open a board game pub in the area, which is INFINITELY more exciting.

What’s the story behind your username?
Created it a looooong time ago. I like undead. I like weapons of all kinds. Undead = Necro, weapons = Blade ... I think you can figure it out from there.

What are other games you enjoy and why?
Too many to list, really. X-Wing (Star Wars battles), Marvel Champions (superhero co-op), Dominion (engine-building), Formula D (racing), A Touch of Evil (cool horror theme), 7 Wonders Duel (tight two-player game), etc, etc. I also enjoy occasionally working on my own designs, and playing El Diabolo’s.

What other interests do you have?
Not much outside board games, really.

HEROSCAPE

When and how did you get into Heroscape?
If I remember correctly, I got RotV as a gift around 2005-ish. Fell in love with it immediately. The simple theme of the Izumi Samurai and Counter Strike was my favorite, though I also particularly enjoyed Syvarris and Ne-Gok-Sa’s thematic simplicity, too.

The AotP project: what got you started?
I don’t remember exactly how the discussion started on the Heroscape Discord, but it seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up. There were already various projects converting AotP to Heroscape and vice-versa, but nothing like Arena of the Valkyrie. Who wouldn’t want easy-to-find minis to add to ’Scape, with enough pre-painted and otherwise passable to make 1.5 RotV worth of new units! With any luck, enough of them will make VC canon via SoV, but either way it’s a cheap, new, accessible Master Set to get more players into Heroscape!

Favorite unit (official/custom):
Kaemon Awa. Again, love samurai, and he’s both super cool and actually good (except for the part where his defense always fails me naturally because he’s my favorite figure ...).

Describe your favorite HeroScape moment:
I have several (and was just having a conversation the other day with El Diabolo about that’s what makes Heroscape so great: everyone’s history with the game is peppered with such moments). I’ll recount one of the earliest, I guess. Way back in the early days, I taught a couple friends by setting up a 3-player, capture the flag map at CSI’s original brick-and-mortar store. Long story kinda short, there was a castle/bridge in the middle with the flag on it and you won by returning it to your start zone. At 300 points, I had Charos and NGS. I flew Charos to the other end of the castle to engage both opponents and force them to deal with him while NGS snuck up behind and went for the flag. One opponent lost all his units except the Airborne, and in the spirit of fun we allowed him to keep rolling for The Drop. NGS made it one turn away from victory at the end of the round ... and, sure enough, next round the The Drop happens and the Elite all position themselves between NGS and home. I manage to win initiative, engage, and roll a 20 for Mind Shackle! We all went nuts. The other highlight of this story is because it was at a store, there were also Heroclix players set up next to us. Everyone who walked in took one look at their games then looked at ours and commented on how cool it was. (By the way, this is a phenomenon that continues to this day every time Heroscape is set up in public.)

Is there anything you would change about the game (unit, rule, mechanic, etc.)?
There really isn’t much. Try different formats to change up the strength levels of each unit, but Delta pricing does a great job leveling the playing field for “standard” pre-built, kill-’em-all play. I would like to see 10 points taken off the Knights of Blackgaard and added to the Cathar Spearmen (and dok will back me up on that), but even that’s pretty minor.

What is your favorite aspect of HeroScape?
The sheer variety. I’ve always loved anything that allows you to mix-and-match units and genres, and Heroscape is the ultimate version of that. And, of course, the community.

COMMUNITY

You’ve been in a lot of community customs projects. What are your favorite experiences from them?
Honestly anything that can add to the game in an “official” capacity is a good time. If it’s meant to play alongside official releases and is designed and balanced as such, the more the merrier!

Can you tell us how you’ve gotten to where you are now in the community?
I guess that depends on where I am now: haha. I’ve been around forever and tried to contribute in my own way over the years. I’m aware that I was a teenager when I started and was capable of pissing people off—pretty sure I still can—but hopefully the positive reputation I’ve earned through humor, customs projects, and other contributions has left a better impact on the community. I’m certainly around less now than in the heyday, but Heroscape will always be important to me (it’s more or less what ignited my passion for modern board gaming).

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
The community contributions. Customs projects, contests, the local scenes ... shout-out to all the brilliant map makers. You all make setting up and playing so much easier. Oh, and back in the day when the site was super busy, the occasional bouts of sheer silliness. Uncle Golden Eggs.

Is there any member of Heroscapers.com you’d really like to play against?
MegaSilver because he basically replaced Heroscape in his life with X-Wing.

I’d also like to revisit the GenCon game against dok where I reminded him of the height advantage that saved his Krav’s life so instead I’d still be undefeated against him.

LIE DETECTOR
Three Truths And A Lie
  1. I owned a hamster-derby-winning hamster.
  2. I name all my pets after various deities.
  3. I once applied to work as a chocolatier while wearing a Willy Wonka jacket.
  4. I once solo-ed an entire start zone of Stingers with just Krug at 1 Life.

Last Month’s Lie (Astroking112)
  1. I was forced to direct and act in a German play that got 2nd place in all of Texas.
  2. I was kicked out of a school in New Mexico.
  3. I have flown an airplane before.
  4. I was the king during a Renaissance faire. During my brief reign, I was assassinated twice for being a tyrant.

THREE FUN FAVORITES

Favorite Movie Genre and Movie:
Scifi/fantasy. I don’t know that I have a single favorite movie, but Endgame was an incredible film.

Favorite Book Genre and Book:
Scifi/fantasy. Again can’t say there’s a single favorite, but I, unlike most people, enjoyed the New Jedi Order series.

Favorite Song Genre and Song:
Depends on my mood: seriously, anything from metal to Motown. Song-wise, though, literally anything by Hozier.

CLOSING

Can you tell us about Pepperony?
Pepperony = Pepper + Tony. My wedding vows included that I would “always be the Tony to her Pepper.” Our wedding cake was Stark Tower, even, with Tony + Pepper ’Clix atop. Seriously, you should check that first answer again.

What message do you have for the ’Scaper community?
Keep doing you! The amount and quality of community contributions that are keeping the game alive is staggering. Keep loving ’Scape and keep creating.

Whom do you pick for the next ’Scaper of the Month?
lefton4ya. He’s always been involved on the site and in the local scene.

Way to go Necroblade! Regarding the Cathar Spearmen, I believe @dok quoted me as saying they should be 90 points.

Nice @NecroBlade - similar but different than when you were SotW in 2009 - but we know one of your truths from then.

Thanks for picking me next but I deferred SoTW to those who have not been before - as my answers are similar to when I was SotW in 2011 (I need to update the #s om my truths and lies, though).
