C3G Interview

It is that time again to step into the wayback machine to 2–2–14 where we meet a behind-the-scenes japes focusing on art for C3G. Little did we know then that he would soon start pumping out lead designs at an unseen pace. Take a peek behind the curtain of the C3G Art Department.

Here comes someone who always sees his shadow, japes!!!

You’re a member of the fabulous Art Department. What software do you use to create the cards? Was there anything special you had to learn in order to produce C3G cards?
First off, it’s an honor and a privilege to be part of this group, and thank you for choosing me for this turn. The Art Department is fabulous due to the efforts of A3n and those before who have set up strict guidelines that allow creativity to flourish while keeping the consistency of quality that the group has fostered.

Now for my part: I use Adobe Photoshop CS6. I have been using Photoshop for many years so the art part wasn’t an issue. However, the text part was a lot more involved than I could have imagined. Luckily, A3n is a good teacher and taught me about tracking, leading, and baseline shifts for characters (text characters, not the figures).

How often do you get to play Heroscape? Do you play mostly with a group or solo? If with a group, describe your group members.
I am somewhat lucky in that I have a very understanding wife that allows us to keep a table in the playroom with a map built, and an incredibly smart 6 year old with an eidetic memory and boundless excitement for superheroes. We probably play at least a few rounds worth of Super Heroscape at least 5 times a week. My group consists of my son and I, and occasionally we convince my wife to play. We moved halfway across the country less than a year ago so we are still meeting people and we have a few friends interested in learning, so the group may grow. We had both Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays at our house this past year and and had several 1,000 point 3–, 4–, and 5–player games; all of our family members that played enjoyed it, and my brother has asked for all of my old cards as I replace them to start his collection.

What is your favorite C3G design and why? What is your favorite special ability?
We have been playing a lot of mutant ’Scape lately and I am really enjoying Cyclops. He actually feels like he is leading a team and setting up attacks and plans.

My favorite special ability is Batman II’s Shadow Strike 15. It kind of combines Spidey Sense with Counter Strike and I have had more than a couple games that have come down to that roll to win the game when both the attacker and Batman had one life left for the game.

Do you prefer mini cards or comic cards? Name 3 of your favorite cards in terms of the artwork.
We exclusively use comic cards in our house, mainly because we don’t always have the official figures, but also we like them better.

I really like the Green Construct cards (bomber and helicopter) mainly because I really enjoyed creating a comic picture, since an actual comic version wasn’t available.

Phoenix (Jean Grey) is a beautiful card to me. The color scheme, the art chosen, and the flames Griff added to the mini.

Batman (Bruce Wayne II) ... I like both the mini and the comic art here as well. The background for the mini is awesome.

What is your favorite movie? Least favorite? Do you prefer going to the theater or watching at home?
I watch a lot of movies so I don’t know if I have a favorite but at the top are The Dark Knight and Usual Suspects.

Not necessarily my least favorite, but I was very disappointed in The Dark Knight Rises. Loved parts of it, especially Catwoman, and I thought the Bane/Talia backstory link was pretty cool, but everything else ... well I have posted about this before so I don’t want to ramble again.

I like the theater, but prefer watching in my own home. I am a simple guy, but, if I ever won the lottery, my one splurge, unnecessary indulgence would definitely be a theater room. Currently I have a 12TB media server linked to my living room TV with tons of movies and TV shows.

What is your occupation (student also counts)? What are your favorite and least favorite aspects of it?
I am a structural engineer. I love the creativity, but do not enjoy the time it takes away.

Do you read comics? What is your favorite superhero? Favorite villain? Which comic villain would you classify as the lamest?
Some, but not consistently. I do pick up collections in paperback form though. I grew up very poor and never really knew much about comics until watching the 90s cartoons Batman TAS and X-Men TAS with my little brother. Mainly because of those, my favorites are Batman and Wolverine. Wolverine less so, as he seems to be everyone’s favorite these days. I always thought Two-Face/Harvey Dent was a great character that had great potential. Loved the “Long Halloween” story and really enjoy bad guys that have a reason or a justification, if only in their minds ... the whole being evil just for the sake of evil never works for me.

If you could have a superpower in real life, what would it be?
If you classify Batman’s superpower as being rich—I’ll take that one. When I was young, I always flip-flopped between invisibility and super-speed, but when I am sitting in traffic I think Nightcrawler’s Bamf! power would be pretty handy. Actually, if I could teleport long distances, that would be cool. I could visit my family all the time all over the country and I could save all that time commuting.

Here it is: THE STUPID QUESTION! I’ll ask a really stupid question, and you can answer it as seriously or as silly as you wish. Be very afraid! If you’d also like to prepare a C3G 3 Truths and a Lie, feel free to add it!

The Stupid Question: If C3G ever decides to produce scratch-n-sniff cards, how would Superman smell?
Clean. Probably like a mountain spring. I never liked Superman because I thought he was too perfect, but he would definitely have a clean smell.

C3G 3 Truths and a Lie
  1. I create my own rectangle cards because I “need” them to look a certain way.
  2. I have a 4 binder that I keep all my C3G Heroscape stuff in. Cards, rules, team draft cards, maps. I have even created cards-sized map pictures to make a pictorial index for my son.
  3. I played professional baseball.
  4. I am Batman.

I'm guessing professional baseball is the lie.
