Back in October, I introduced YACE (Yet Another Cost Estimator), a formula to estimate the cost of your custom. This month, I’ll take a look at how to use the formula to “price” special attacks and d20 powers.

The purpose of the YACE formula is to give you an initial idea of a unit’s cost. You’ll still need to test, of course, and no formula can replace that. But, you need to start somewhere, and YACE can help get you in the right ballpark, or whatever sports metaphor you’d like to use for “close but not exact.”

To review, here’s the formula, arrived at through regression analysis:

• Estimated Points = (20 × Lives) + (2 × Adjusted Move) + (5 × Range) + (15 × Attack) + (17 × Defense) + (4 × APT) – 115

Where:

• “Lives” is life for heroes, or number of figures

Heroscape has always been a game where mixing and matching units from numerous different worlds, different times, and even different genres has been the norm. In fact, that's the core of the game's theme. But that doesn't mean every unit stands alone. One of the most beloved aspects of the game is the concept of factions: units that mesh together, in terms of theme and often also gameplay. Romans, marro, elves, samurai ... the list is long.

While it is, of course, fun to create custom units that fit within existing factions, whether official, C3V, C3G, HoSS, or anything else, it is also exciting to create entirely new factions. The sad reality of the Fan Fiction forum is that the majority of what you read is unfinished. This does have the benefit of pointing you towards the really good fiction though, as those that are especially well-written usually garner the most readers and are subsequently finished.

This system isn’t flawless though. There are quite a few unfinished fictions out there that were well-written and great reads. One of those is “Bloodlines,” by Bro-man.

What made “Bloodlines” great was not the quality of the writing. I’m just going to say it: there are errors in grammar and spelling, and sometimes the wording is clunky. However, none of that matters. ...

Being a unique human hero is pretty average for C3G. Human status brings some minor benefits, but nothing that’s particularly notable for Hawkeye. A class of “Archer” ties Hawkeye into a few different special powers. The first is Merlyn’s Archer Rivalry, the second is Speed Shot on Roy Harper in both his guises, and the third is The Brave and the Bold on Batman (III).
