TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry 34

When I wrote my last entry, I was having some trouble with stakes. After conversations with fellow writers Bigga and TAF, and several looks back at my own writing resources, I came to a few conclusions, which I think have solved my stakes problem. Hopefully permanently.

And that means we're clear to get back to fan fiction.

Unfortunately, the stakes issue demanded a look back at the internal structure of the fan fiction I've been working on. And, as seems to be the recurring case, I found something was wrong.

Part of the core of a story which I base everything off of is the story type. I use four main story types, and each dictates where the story begins and ends, and what the primary goal is (in very general terms). There's nothing wrong with the story types. I just... used the wrong one.

What can happen during development is that I'll start with an idea of how the story will play out, and start developing things based on that, and then that idea slowly changes as I realize what won't work or what has to happen. That's what happened with this fan fiction, and I unfortunately never realized it, meaning the core is warped because it's trying to fit a story type with doesn't exist.

Long story short, I did some research on the correct story type, and the goals would never line up. I would have to create a different protagonist, who then could not see everything the two main characters are doing, and whose goal would be nonsensical.

Longer story short, I've scrapped the fan fiction.

Don't worry; I think it's for the best. Things always come out better when I revise them due to problems. The new story I am considering, while not decided on completely, is a lot more centered on the war for the wellsprings, which is actually what I was aiming for all along. It's also a lot more straightforward to develop, so it shouldn't take too long.

Right now I'm trying to work out some details of the idea. Once those are pounded down, I'll begin development.

P.S. Also, if you watch my sig, you might have noticed I have found a name for my infinite series: Eternity. It will be very fitting in more ways than one. At least such is the hope.
