The Aztecs, in their central lake in Mexico, and the Incas in the mountains of Peru, displayed civilized cities rich in silver and gold. These cities were sacked and destroyed by the Spanish Conquistadores. But the Maya, whose great cities had already fallen, had no such obvious treasures.
