Choose an army!

At the last tournament I attended, I will admit, I was challenged by the format. The format was 385 points over 14 16 figures. Each map had a house army (one that was prebuilt), and players diced off to see who chose what build: their own, the house, or even their opponent's. The Tourney Report can be seen here, if you want to give it a read.
From a tournement last year, we discovered that some of the high end units were really deadly, largely because players couldn't mass commons to fight them.
So, in a format where you could end up fighting your own army units like Nilfheim, Bramcephys, and Heracles were all really risky to run. You'll probably be able to win games where you did run your own Army, and you run a big risk of losing them if you can't. Two of my game wins were because of that very reason, and one of my wins was because I was able to get a big unit , Jotun, to face against my opponent's Quahon.
My possible builds before I settled on a my final build included a pretty decent variety of units. It looks like I lost the notepad on my phone, so I'll just have to go from memory. The Jotun Build was one of those options, but I decided against it too... I got to play it anyway
This build focused on being simple to play and overall attrition, but I didn't think the TSA would pull off enough firepower in situations where they were my better bet.
This build relied on using the Deathwings to poach targets as DCM3 got into position. The Deathwings would have popped when the enemy clustered up. In practice the build was actually pretty decent. One of my friends was going to use it.
I was actually going to take this build! But I couldn't find my squad of Capuans and there was no guarentee I was able to borrow another squad. The high stats of the Gladiators were still beatable, but fairly reliable. The Gladiatrix was a nicely placed filler.
Pretty simple Valiant built, use the 4th Mass until they're spent and then use a (probably) 6 move Charos as the ultimate cleanup. I had strongly considered this build before the Gladiators build.
I know I warned myself against playing a Bramcephys build, but after how well he did for me in a tournement prior, I had to see if I could tone the overall power level down. The Drudge are often ignored since they are weak, but they were quite effective on their home turf. This is especially true when you can fit another squad instead of their more reliable brothers, the Marro Stingers.
I wanted to see if I could make Sudema at least halfway decent for this format, but nah. I think I need more points and more Mummies. Or less Sudema in general lol. In practice the Stingers did the most.
This wasn’t a bad army for the format, but I think it was too meta-reliable. My friend used it, and did win with it a few times however.
I saw this in the 380 point armies thread, and I actually wanted to give it shot. But I couldn’t justify playing Monks against possible Braxas builds. DED is loads of fun, but he won’t take out dragons reliably.
So, I originally planned to use Steamroller Lite, I had to go with Spooder’s Poison since I was short some units. So, I was flipping through my deathstack of cards and saw Estivara and thought, “why not?”. I started doing the math with a couple of Wyverns since I don’t have Sujoah. With 105 points left I just threw a couple spooder squads and a chainfighter for theme in. Screw it, the army was tactically strong enough to be viable with a decent bit of counterplay in it. If I ran into a big nasty, I could hope for some love from the dice gods. Additionally the army was also crappy enough to corner my opponent into using a house army if I got to steal theirs. Since I saw the house armies were pretty scattered strength-wise, that was an advantage for me. Most players underestimate my entire army, including me. I still didn’t expect it to perform.

Thanks Tornado! Zombies would have been awesome to run... if I could have that many figures. The figure limit really hurt hordes.

They're not terribly competitive, but Drow + Spiders armies are really fun.

Both the Drow and the Spiders are lots of fun, barring Pelloth mainly. I can’t find many good uses for his SA, except something like Sentinels or Minions.
