FFC #39 - About this whole 'Character Arc' thing...

TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry #39

Some of you might know that I've briefly paused the development of Eterntiy and its installments while I read up on character arcs. I'm now beginning to realize that said pause will be longer than I originally thought.

Not only is there a lot to character arcs and how they are put together, but getting an idea of how they work and how to create them is proving a lot more difficult to grasp than I had originally supposed. I'm going to have to study multiple sources, breakdown lots of examples, and probably practice writing short character arcs some before I'm in a spot where I can restart the development for Eternity.

I might create a short thread for that above-mentioned practice. No promises; that's still in the foggy future.

Currently I'm studying the wisdom of K. M. Weiland. If you know if any breakdown of character arcs (and specifically FORMULAS for how to create them) which are must reads/views, let me know.

There is no ETA for how long this study might take. There isn't really a lot going on for the next few months, so I should have plenty of time to study what I need to. It depends more on my interest than anything else, since it fluctuates with a mind of its own.

If all goes well and I can stay relatively focused though, I hope to be back to Eternity by the end of the month. That could be a big if however.

I'll keep you updated. And be sure to link me to any research I should be aware of.

I don't know much about research and formulas to do it, but when it comes to compelling character arcs I always think of Avatar: The Last Airbender--specifically Prince Zuko (one of the best antiheroes in fiction) and Sokka (the best comedic relief character in fiction). I'm sure there's some videos or articles breaking down the inner workings of what make those character arcs work so well.

I think the three most compelling arcs out there to tell are 1) good people falling from grace, 2) bad people being redeemed, and 3) young people becoming adults. Zuko and Sokka are two of those three.
