Final D3 Preview: National Heroscape Day

I just got home from the New England NHSD event. Across the country today players sat down across the table to roll some dice together. If your local NHSD event was anything like mine, you came away with a bunch of fun stories, and hopefully a few new rivals!

I'm excited to announce that WotC gave us permission to release the preview set of D3 to some lucky participants on National Heroscape Day. So a few lucky players in New England, Texas, and Iowa walked away from the events with some very exclusive prizes!

At each of those 3 events today we revealed one final figure, and for those of you not attending, here they are!

Moltenclaw:

Moltenclaw might look like just a short range Mimring at first. However, once you play on a battlefield with him, you'll realize he completely changes the way your opponent thinks about placement!

Ice Troll Berserker:

The Ice Troll is a quick, low cost hero for the Arrow Gruts to bond with, and a really force on any snow filled battlefield!

Master of the Hunt:

The master of the hunt is the final new sculpt in the wave. Since he's in the common pack, he's an Uncommon Hero that fights for Einar. He's a perfect addition to Einar's forces, and a very exciting figure to field in an army.

Moltenclaw is a badass.
He seems larger than 8, though. Master of the Hunt seems like he will decimate your opponent's heroes. The berserker is cool, but he looks like he has a claw on his nose...
@Grishnak: I think the MofH is very big
@Heros Cape: I agree, Utgar now has three dragons... :P

I do not get Molten claws power. Either he's just like Memring except with 4 range less or i'm missing something. Can someone tell me if it works like Memrings special attack?

unless I'm mistaken, he can attack any figure in his line of sight, and then 4 spaces in a straight line from there, hence the 4+ symbol?
Either that, or it's a range of 4 to the figure, and then an extra 4 spaces, being Mimring's attack...

So basically he's just like Memring with the fire special attack?

True, but yes. He's also cooler looking. However, if it is any figure in his line of sight, he's considerably better

Moltenclaw: Interesting variation on Mimring's Fire Line, and I think he is priced very well. Whether or not he will do well in the tourney scene, it's hard to say. B
Ice Troll: This one is hard to guess. I think the deciding factor in his popularity will be next year's tournament, because he could be very meta-game dependent. (By the way, his jacked up nose is a defect.) B-ish?
Master of the Hunt: Can't see him being used much outside of casual games, but over-all a decent fun unit. Can't say the same for the sculpt though... B-

This wave likes Bs, me and Shockma ranked almost every unit of the wave as a B.

(Shocky helped me write this. )

GO MOLTENCLAW!!!!!!! 'Nuf said. Master of the Hunt looks cool with his Mortal Strike and Ice Troll Berserker I can just picture raiding with others of his kind with the arrow gruts close behind. Cool.

I'm not so sure about the Master of the Hunt being uncommon, simply for thematic reasons. I mean, we used to have figures that were unique, but there were lots of them thematically, most notably the deathwalkers. Would they have been uncommon if they came out since D1? I would guess so. I just feel that there's a little too much uncommoning going on, both in how many and in this whole unique/uncommon thing. I love the idea; I was wondering what to make a certain custom like before the uncommons, and they bring a lot to to the gameplay and the thematic values. But starting with wave 1, I felt we may have been going a little overboard with uns; I thought maybe since it was new we were making up for lost time, but this is the third wave and we are still being swarmed like New Gettysburg. It also seems we should be getting more Aquilla. I don't know, I personally don't mind that so much, but it seems odd that she comes out and we get 2 cards for her, but when Valkrill the DnD general comes out, we get a few in the first wave. *shrugs* Maybe none of this is anything, just though it a bit odd. Not sure why the uncommon thing is so uncomfortable; maybe not wanting things to change, or maybe something more legitamte.

But also, with this being the third DnD wave, I can almost hear the DnD conspiracy theorists on this site talking, and I wouldn't blame them. I have never written their concerns off yet, and with this third wave, it's beginning to look weird. Don't get me wrong, lots of great ideas and skulpts! I just am voicing concern over the DnD take over hypothesis. Out of all of the new figs in wave 3, I look forward to using Moltenclaw, most definately (see previous sentance ^_^). If there is one pack I would buy out of the 3 DnD waves, it is the one with Moltenclaw (yep, don't own one yet, havn't had the pleasure, but look forward to it). Anyway, just voicing my concern. I hope we see many more figures (classic, Marvel, DnD, and maybe others?) in the future.

As I understand it, Moltenclaw can target any figure within 4 spaces of him and start the 'line of fire' from that point in any direction in a straight line for 4 spaces. Definately some similarities with Mimring but much more versatile while it can't hit as many at once it can do some very interesting things to your opponents field position.

Great work design team. I look forward to getting this wave. I do hope we see a return to classic scape though. I feel that this may be my last wave to buy into. More because I just don't play anymore than anything else but I think if we were still getting classic Scape I would continue to buy into it whether it was getting played or not. I just don't have the same feel for the DnD stuff.

Also, I really don't like the uncommons. They are a rip off to me. They play like uniques in every way including (for me) in that I would only field 1 of them in most situations. It is frustrating to have to buy 4 uncommons in order to get the 4 commons you want for your collection and end up with a bunch of uncommons you'll never field. I guess that's always been a concern though whether it's having to buy a theme you don't like to get the one you do or buy a less competetive squad to get the more competetive squad or the cost differences in packs like the Drones and Minions which felt a lot like the uncommons situation now.

I look forward to this release and to see what the future brings (although with a little trepedation).

Ooo, for future figures, shall I suggest, Morrigan as a new kyrie hero? Like, the first 250 point kyrie? lol I guess she'd be....Hey! the first Valkrill kyrie! It'd be perfect! He's all about death and zombies, anyway, right? Pefect!
......
Well, if I was a designer, that's what I would do.

Very nice wave! This makes me really happy. Moltenclaw and the Mater of the Hunt look extremely cool. (The Ice troll Berserker looks like his nose is dripping).

Does anyone else find it weird that Moltenclaw is a Huge 8 dragon, on a single space?

Ouch! 'd by Eirikir about Moltenclaws power. Sound's nasty either way. But there is one thing that scares me. If Moltenclaw is only a prince, sounds like we'll be getting another big King/Queen dragon for Utgar.

I don't like all the new single-hexed large and huges. It's the only DnD change I'm against so far, but I'm really against it. I might just cut them off their huge bases and slap 'em on double-hexers. Moltenclaw's sculpt is also rather awful.
