Scaper of the Week # 55

Scaper of the Week Interview # 55

Well, here it is, SotW interview # 55, my final interview. It's been a long time coming for me, and quite frankly, I look forward to reading these as a member again, and not as the interviewer. It has been fun. It's been real. And it's been real fun.

But all good things must come to and end as so my time here does, too. But I do leave you in capable hands. As a matter of fact, ********** is rarin' to go and is doing his own interview even now.

Don't worry. You're in good hands with *e******e*!

(And yes, that's still the right amount of stars )

But enough doodling (), without further adieu, I present to you:

lefton4ya

-Scaper of the Week # 55!-

Who are you?

David Lefton, a wierd person from Cleveland, OH

Who, or what, is your avatar and how did you come up with your username?

Green Arrow - specifically a heroclix image fig I put on a card from one of an early set of SuperHero customs I made and was the favorite to play among me and a group of friends at the time with 3 awesome attacks. I was playing with GIMP when making cards then and thought it was really cool you could do colorized shading for backrounds. For christmas I made it Green Arrow & Speedy to give it Green+Red. LeftOn4ya is a userneme I have been using on the interwebz since my AOL IM days - uses my last name, but also is "Left On for you"

Age:

28

Occupation?

IT Jack of all Trades working at a department at Case Western Reserve University, which entitles me for free tuition to get my MBA wich I am not even 20% done with.

Allegiance and why?

I usually like mixing up armies when playing but if I need to play one general it is a toss bwen Jandar and Vydar. However my final pick is Vydar because I like fighting for good, but Vydar fights good and is cool. New heroscape players young and old, men and women, always like starting with vydar too.

When did you get into HeroScape and why?

From Players who got hooked through Marvelscape:

Was at a retreat around 2004 and someone said a few people were playing a nerdy game. Checked it out, though it was cool and nerdy at same time, but did not play since I never played RPG or strategy game other than Risk or Stratego because I didn't want to be associated as a "Gamer". Anyway, did not even remember the name of the game till later and decided not for me.

Late 2005, roomate got job at ToysRUs and bought Master Set 1 on company discount. I played it and liked it, and actually got real into building maps for it, but still did not want to buy own set for fear of being "Gamer"

He mentioned Marvel Version was coming out, so I thought "That can't be too nerdy to play with Superhroes" (I know it defies logic) and bought Marvel Set. I wanted more land, so also bought Lava set at same time. Soon bought an oversized Batman and Superman action figure on clearance and made hand made cards of Bat & Supand was a custom Hero junkie from then on.

Later I bought Marro set for land and figures as more of friends played with official characters. I also buy HeroClix figures and design my own Marvel customs, however its harder to find anyone I know willing to play comic heroes as many friends all buy the expansions and feel comic heroes are too powerful. Now am hooked on playing non-comic 'scape, buy expansions, and visit this site a lot.

So I guess I started playing official set, "got hooked" through Marvelsacepe, and am now hooked on normal Heroscape. Put me in the YES list.

Favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?

It is easy and fun enough for previous non-gamers to get into, yet intricate enough for hardcore gamers, has cool figures from all genres, and is relatively cheap and has little to no "power creep" compared to "collectable" games

Favorite Hero and why?

Raelin. I know it's the cheap answer both to this question and to winning games, but I use her in about 50% of home games and 75% of tournament games. It is actually challenging to use her because you HAVE to be good at order management and map control when using her, so having her in your army actually can improve your game because you practice those skills every time you use her which is useful for other parts of an army.

Favorite Unique Squad and why?

Nakita Agents - they go great with any army as they add range and defense to a melee army, plus I simultaneously hate it and love it when when respectively I or an opponent forgets about Engagement Strike until it is too late (we have a rule that you get a friendly warning the first time but after that like chess if you take your hand off a figure that you moved to engage - STRIKE!)

Favorite Common Squad and why?

10th Regiment of Foot - I have done best in tournaments with them - they are a combination range & melee squad not tied down to a general or personality (ahem 4th) so you can use Raelin and any Hero with them.

Favorite Special ability and why?

Bonding - I have been known to be an advocate of bonding, but I just like the idea of using some weak squad figures and strong hero in one turn and also having the ability to field multiple heroes at the same time without having to think too much about order management.

Anything you'd change about the game - a unit, rule, or mechanic?

I really like what the Competitive Unit Congress is doing. I know that people like saying "the designers knew what they were doing" or that some units were more designed with scenarios or drafting in mind and agree with that. But for pre-made army games especially tourneys it would be great if 217 different units were a possibility in any winning army - it would almost eradicate metagaming and players skill and luck would be the only deciding factors. Make Raelin v1 worth 125, Rats worth 55, Q9 have 6 defense and you'd be halfway there as those 3 changes would completely change the ranking of every other figure.

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?

Almost every week there is some great contribution to the community that forever changes the site and/or game. I also like to see when new people come on board, are welcomed greatly, slowly move from asking questions to answering them, and start making great contributions - all in less then a year.

Favorite HeroScape moment:

In a NorthEast Ohio Valentine Weekend tourney last year, I won the first three games and played the undefeated Heath (in a game that would decide the champion) with my 10th X4 and Rats X2 vs. his 10th x 2, Cypren & Sonya, & Marro Warriors and it came down to 3 rats and 3 10th vs. a full health Cypren. When I had 2 10th left and attacked with both in one turn, I got his Cypren down to one life, but then he Chilling Touch/Life Drained the rest of my 10th and then finished off my rats. Closest game ever! I then went on to play a MattserTruckRally only killing one squad of dwarves and 3 marro warriors (70 points), and him knocking out 75% of my army (300?) in the time limit, knocking me down to 7th/14th in the tournament (if SOS was ranked ahead of points, it'd be 4th). If I had one more skull against Heath I would have been in 1st (champion got bye last game) but I would have never learned why Mattser won Gencon twice and how much I needed to improve in facing melee armies, so I am grateful for the loss.

Another board game you enjoy and why?

I have been getting into Dominion (which is technically a card game) and it is pretty fun although I have never won because friends always beat me, but I miss Risk which I used to play a bunch and I would not play to win but just screw with the current person in the lead, which is coincidentally what I do in multiplayer Heroscape Free-For-All games.

Three true things and one lie about yourself:

At 28 years old:
  • I have had 12 or more jobs (full-time, part-time, but not counting temp jobs)
  • I have lived in 12 or more places (homes, apartments, dorms, but not counting extended vacations)
  • I have had 12 or more pets (dogs, rabbits, gerbils, but not counting fish)
  • I have belonged to 12 or more spiritual/religious congregations of different denominations/sects (churches, synagogues, college religious/spiritual organizations, not counting home bible studies or prayer groups)
  • Bonus: One is 20 or more!
Other interests?

International sociology and anthropology - By that I mean trying to hang out and befriend international students, reading up on and watching documentaries about cultures past or present, and hopefully one day live and work in and/or help a non-profit organization in another country.

Any Heroscapers member you'd really like to play against?

Raudulfr Shieldcrusher - I have been to 4+ tournaments with him, have traded with him and got some of his custom terrain and a hex bowl, talked with him about our similar job interests, but never actually played him. Hopefully the next tourney I can.

Five Fun Favourites
(because, let's face it, you won't find these things out in the middle of a Competitive armies thread or the What's In An Order Marker discussion )

Favorite food:

Stir-Fry of chicken, vegetables, white rice, and a different sauce every day of the week.

Favorite book:

The Book of John (or the bible as a whole). If excluded, anything by C.S. Lewis such as the Space Trilogy

Favorite Sport:

Ultimate (Frisbee) to play, Football to watch.
Favorite Movie:

Get Shorty

Favorite TV Show:

Current: The Office
Past: Star Trek: Deep Space 9

What message do you have for the community?

Organize and play more games, especially trying to get new people into the game. I think it great with all the custom stuff and community contributions, but if we don't get new blood and invigorate ourselves by keep playing, the game will slowly die out.

Thanks again to all the interviewees for doing all the interviews. I've really enjoyed my time doing this. Good luck, ***a******!

Wow. Totally didn't know I could edit other people's comments in my own blog.

Wish I would've known that sooner.

Oh, and good guess.

Did lefton4ya get to pick the next interview, or is *******v** starting with an interviewee of his choice?

It seems like every Scaper of the Week anymore plays Ultimate. And dok - I actually had a disc at GenCon last year. At Origins a couple years ago, we threw it around in the halls at 2 in the morning, but we never did break it out at GC.

BTW, I'm on the homes.

Lamaclown is next on the list since Dad_Scaper picked him. Lamaclown picked someone to be next but so did I. This was my response to who to pick next:
Quote:
Who do you pick for the next 'Scaper of the Week? (if someone else picks it up):
killercactus - He organized half the tournaments I went to and he may not have the best results in tourneys, but I admire him trying to get undervalued units more rep.
So I think *e*a*i*ve* might go with you next.

As to my truths and lies, it is kinda cheap because one is 11, one is 12, one is around 15, and one is 20+ (guess which one is that too)

And, yes we do need to get a game of Ultimate going after our next event.

Thanks again rym for all your work and I am honored to be your last interview.

P.S. The link to my Comic Customs are off in case anyone cares (I created an account just for this - my 1st post)

Thanks, David! If selected I promise to give as good an interview as you did. However, I think my tourney results are pretty good (69% - I'm no dok, but it's respectable).

Alright, I'll give you guys 50/50.

I have had 6 dogs, 2 rabbits, and 4 gerbils (so 12 pets, not counting fish).
I have belonged to 15-16 religious/spiritual congregations/organizations including Reform & Conservative Jewish temples, Messianic Congregations, many non-denominational college groups (Hillel, InterVarsity, Campus Crusades, ACT, H2O), and churches ranging from lutheran, evangelical, Vineyard, Assembly of God & Church of God, and non-denominational, not counting home prayer groups & bible-studies.

That leaves Jobs and Housing - I'll give you a hint, one is 11 and the other is 26 - I have to keep a database for both so if I need to fill out applications (Work or Housing) I don't have to rack my brain thinking of contact info and start/end dates for each.
