You are never too old for toys!

Posted June 2nd, 2010 at 03:26 PM by Nadi
Let's face it... HeroScape may brand the
'8+ years of age on the box', but I don't know anyone (outside of my 8 year old nephew) that plays that isn't under 18 years. In fact, in all the years that I've been playing HeroScape, I've hardly known any children (or young teens for that matter) to play HeroScape in our sessions. And here lately, it seems that older adults (35+) seem to be the main focus.

So, that has gotten me thinking about my latest 'thrill ride.' A few weeks ago, I was at my mom's house visiting and my niece (5 years old) and nephew (8 years old) were there, spending time with 'grammie' and 'big daddy.' During the course of the visit, I managed to pick up a set of 'StrikeFire' Nerf guns that these two had gotten this past Christmas. They looked pretty cool (I'm a sucker for toys... I learned from a guy much older than I was at the time that you are NEVER too old to play with toys. I used to think he was crazy, until we went to Big Lots one evening, bought some toy lightsabers on sale, and had a 3 way saber battle in the parking-lot right after we bought them. He had me believing. ) and figured I would take a few rounds with the kids... just have some fun.

Well, needless to say... I had a blast. (And my nephew won on top of that... that little brat.) So, I was surprised that a few weeks later, my wife got me the same Furyfire set for my birthday as kind of a 'fun' gift. Well, a few more rounds of playing with the kids... and I'm hooked. I've been doing some research online and I've discovered that Nerf communities are pretty popular on the web, with full out organized Nerf wars and events, to custom modding and upgrades for Nerf products.

I never realized that people were so into it.

Well, not to be out-done, a group of my friends a few others have started to purchase some Nerf guns and we plan on having our own official 'Nerf War' in the next few weeks. Our church has access to a gym behind it and we have already begun to layout the 'floor plan' of tables, chairs, bleachers, and other obstacles to make our own little 'in-house' war zone. I found an interesting link on the web that kind of showcases the different type of Nerf games that are played at these events, HERE.

So, that got me wondering: Is there anyone else here in the community that participates in Nerf related activities? I have to admit that I'm really looking forward to our first event. (We all are.) I know I have friends and such that are big into AirSoft and things like that.. but Nerf seems to just be a great solution for not only adults, but something that my niece and nephew could play along with us as well. If any of you are out there and do stuff like this, you have any advice / suggestions for participating / planning our first event?

I had no idea there was such a dedicated Nerf community. Two of my cousins (both boys) have a veritable arsenal of Nerf guns, as they get them as gifts for every occasion. I got them the Iron Man Nerf blaster this Christmas (shoots something like its entire 12-dart clip in about 2 seconds) and we had a blast, along with three of our other cousins, two of them girls.

I've always love NERF but never got into the 'community.' I just collect the odd gun here and there.

Modifying guns is popular, I know, and I've seen some that are cool looking and others that are impressive as far as fire-power goes. The only mod I've ever done was the "Roulette" mod on the Maverick. All it does is make the barrel pop all the way out so you can spin it. Although I would like to increase the air pressure at some point (longer range).

I own a couple non-NERF Storm guns as well, which I'd like to spray-paint matte green to look like the Enforcers from Unreal Tournament.

As for lightsabers, I both won a fight at Wal-Mart at 3am (due to my long reach) and had a brief 3-way battle on my university campus at 2am.

(Oh, and the Iron Man [1] gun fires 10 shots, singly or as a burst. )

I think that community you found is to Nerf is as this site is to Heroscape: plenty of people just play within their family/friends whatever, but there's a small sect that's competitive about it and makes all sorts of custom stuff for it and organizes events.
