Battle 1: Ambush on the Hero Encampment

I meet with my group of friends weekly for a Heroscape game. Lately all we’ve been playing is Heroes of ‘Scape. Although the scenarios don’t necessarily progress in any order, I try to connect them if I can. I’m going to start today by trying catching you guys up with the weeks gone by and to announce that I’m going to post my weekly games here. I would post them in the Battle Reports thread… but they aren’t exactly “Battles” and I don’t think people over there would care too much for these updates.

Battle 1: Ambush on the Hero Encampment

The small group of Heroes has set up a camp amidst some old ruins. To the North is a forest and to the South is a small river. A fire pit stands in the middle of the ruins where the champions were resting when they are alarmed by the sound of movement from the forest.

The four of them, a Dragonborn Warrior, a Dwarf Rogue, an Elf Wizard, and a Human Fighter, are surrounded on both sides. From the North a pack of Wolves of Badru close in on their location, with Brandis Skyhunter (who’s just an Elf in my world) stalking behind them.

From the South, Syvarris and a small squad of Aubrien Archers prepare for the flank as they set up on the hill on the opposite side of the river.

The Heroes quickly take the high ground just outside the encampment facing the forest. The Wolves of Badru make their strike, but to no avail. The Heroes quickly dispatch the Wolves.

However, a Sahugin Raider from the river hops out and decides to give the Heroes some hassle.

He is quickly dealt with.

The Heroes decide to take out Brandis before he can cause too much trouble.

Unfortunately for the Heroes, Brandis was just a distraction as the Elf archers forge the river and take to the high ground on the opposite side of the encampment behind a wall.

After Brandis meets an unfortunate end (life as fodder never goes well) the Heroes make their ways back to the camp and engage in battle with archers. However the band of Heroes have forgetter that Syvarris is an excellent sharpshooter and starts to peg down the Elf Wizard.

Seeing as the only ranged unit is the Fighter (with only 1 attack at range and 5 range) the party doesn’t stand much of a chance unless they engage the archer in hand to hand combat. As the melee units close in, they take a few wounds and eventually engage the archers at the wall.

With the height advantage, the archers live long enough to eliminate the Human Fighter, but not before the Dwarf Rogue was able to sneak around behind the archers and take out Syvarris.

Just when the Heroes thought they had achieved victory, a Wyvern swoops in and makes an appearance.

None of the Heroes knew what to expect, as they’d never faced a Wyvern before (I had only gotten D1 and D2 waves a few weeks prior
) so they were taken greatly off guard as the Wyvern flew over the pack, snatching the half dead Elf Wizard along the way, eliminating the Rogue and Warrior’s defense support.

The Wyvern is slain shortly afterwards, and the Dwarf and the Dragonborn gain enough experience to become level 2.

At the end of every report I’ll post what the Heroes were and what abilities they took. If I feel it necessary I’ll give a quick analysis of some of the Heroes in how they performed, especially if I feel a change is required. So for this game…
Spoiler Alert!

Battle 2 coming soon! In order to get revenge against the Elves for ambushing their encampment, the Heroes prepare for an attack against the elfin base!

Looks like a lot fun. I'm going to have to try these over the winter. I always enjoy new games that I don't have to pay anything for.

quick question, you mentioned a fire pit in the camp, what did you use for it?

Pretty simple, just take a road tile, put battlements on all sides, and put a fire elemental in the middle

I actually recreated the map (from what I could remember) and took some pics. I'm gonna update this page with the pics tonight and start the blog entry for Battle 2!
