TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry #40
Recently, I mentioned how my study of character arcs was proving a lot more expansive than I had original anticipated. It keeps getting larger, but at least I feel like I'm finding a ton of new information I was previously missing. It's kind of all hitting me at once, so I'll need time to sort through it and figure it all out.
Here's what I see happening: There's no way I'm not going to practice creating character arcs. I think practice is the best way I'll be able to get a firm grip on how the different character arcs (and parts of the arcs) work together. I thought for a bit about what characters I could use to practice with, and naturally decided on characters I had been toying with for Eternity. Namely the Valkyrie.
The Valkyrie are perfect test subjects because their primary traits are already somewhat defined by the game. All I had to do was create backstories for them which explained how they became the people they are, and when I worldbuilt Valhalla for Eternity, I had already done that for about half of them (Einar, Utgar, Vydar, and ideas for Valkrill and Ullar).
I was able to take the basic idea of who they are, plus the basic backstories I had created, and apply the process I've learned so far from studying character arcs. I was able to create a rough outline for an origin story of sorts for one of them, which with some work, I think could be pretty good.
So am I going to post said story? Maybe. Probably. But most likely not right away. I've successfully created an outline using one of five possible character arcs, and I want to explore the other ones more first, and make more rough outlines using them. I don't feel very confident in my grasp of character arcs as a whole, and I want to try creating some more stories with them before I start actually writing anything.
Once I DO start writing, then yes, I will probably post these stories as a sort of 'prequel series' to Eterntiy (since they would take place well before the rest of Eterntiy).
I will keep you updated.
