Thormun's Journal - The Swarm of the Marro Scenarios
There have been some recent updates to Thormun's Journal. These recent entries directly reflect the events played out in the scenarios that are included in the Swarm of the Marro Master Set.
Thormun's Journal has taken on a far more mature tone. I wrote these current entries back during a time when the game was still at Hasbro and I fully expected to have to tone them down in a second draft. You see, Craig and I had an ongoing deal, I would write the stories raw, I would write them the way I thought they should be told and he would just reel me back in where he thought I had gone too far for Hasbro's younger audience. However, as many of you know, the game has moved hands to Wizards of the Coast where Hasbro felt the game could be better marketed toward the hobby gamers (that would be us, we are mostly an older demographic here), and as a result I get away with things like this:
Quote:
My boot splashes into standing water and is sucked downward by the spluttering mud. The water is murky, an awful shade of rancid-green with a smell to match. I glance down at my slowly sinking foot and my eye catches on a floating object bumping itself up against my leg. Some itch in the back of my brain has me stoop over to make a closer inspection. I lift it slightly out of the water, the clinging algae drips away, and then I drop it in gut-wrenching horror. A bloated arm lies there in the dim pool, lurid, and streaked with blue veins. I take a step backwards and look over the water’s surface. More of the same morbid bits bob their way around the stagnant puddle. The dead surround us, left here to rot in the mire.
Before I can even begin to react to what I’m seeing, a new terror seizes me. I stand transfixed, as a pale arm reaches itself up out of the slime. Raelin screams. Raelin, who is always unmoved in the face of battle, always brave, always bold, is now gripped with fear. A dripping torso pulls itself out of the water. Then another body emerges, and another. It is as if the dead rise from their slumber to rejoin the living. But these are not the faces of the dead. These macabre faces belong to the marro. They’ve hidden themselves among the corpses of their previous victims, laying in wait to ambush us.

Nice article Truth! I'd be curious to see what the journal entries would look like if you tried to be even more graphic.

Great job truth, they're really well done. I really enjoyed the flash back Drake had to his home, I love hearing the back stories of Characters.

What would be really cool would be if you could use the raw journal entries instead of the old ones that were used during hasbro's control(the ones that had to be toned down).

This is the sort of direction I had hoped that Wizards would take for a more mature demographic. With the guts to allow those graphic writings on their site, they give me hope that they will continue to take bold moves toward changing their targeted audience. Furthermore, having a company that is seeking to please the loyal fans ..well....pleases me. Thanks to Wizards, Truth and all the Powers to Be.

Nice write up Truth... I was curious to know, do you write for the journal in your spare time or are you given specific deadlines to have material present?

Thanks for all your hard work and that of all others who have made this what I consider to be the greatest game system of all time. Can we now finally say (what many of us learned long ago) that, while this game can easily be learned by children, at the higher levels (as chess) this is an adult "gamer's game"? Will anyone deny it now?
Thanks again Truth and Moderators/others. |

I love how we get all these emotions and details of characters from these. It really gives you more of an understanding when playing

The Marro hiding in the water with the dead bodies... so awesome! That is exactly how I picture them to be. Keep it up!

By game I mean videogame. They could really have fun with that. I'm talking not being able to see everywhere on the battlefield all the time. The only parts of the field lit would be where your figures have stepped, in a range relative to their hieght. 'Course, then it'd be exactly like Age of Empires but without biuldable units and resource collection. Still extreemely awesome though. Never seen scouting before, and all those figures with good move but bad atk/def would have another use.

Looks good, I like the new tone! I agree with Pickledpie, they should make a game and call it... Heroscape.

If they made a video game, they should base it off of Fire Emblem, but with hexes. It is very similar with terrain and obsticles.
