C3G
Many Universes, One World: A History of C3G

Chapter 1: BG (Before the Guild)

In the beginning, there was a picture and a promise of things to come. A promise left unfulfilled. Yes, I am talking about the Marvel Reinforcements pack, a horribly evil tease of what the gentlemen in charge of this game could do if given our beloved Marvel Universe. But really, I need to go even further back to the release of Marvel: the Conflict Begins. This was when our eyes were really opened to the potential that Heroscape has/had, when we got a glimpse of what could be done when a licensed toy was combined with our magnificent, seemingly fledgling game. Little did we know that Marelscape’s demise would only foreshadow the demise of the manufacture of the game as well, but I digress.

After Marvelscape, came the influx of comic book based customs. Pioneers like hi1hi1hi1hi1, AllSkulls, Greyowl, Sherman Davies, and IamBatman had entire threads full of the characters we loved (some more than one thread) and all of them had a wealth of skills that made them stand out. AllSkulls nailed down Marvel, while IamBatman took on DC. GreyOwl spearheaded shared resources offering lists of Species, Class, etc. while also offering amazing templates in a myriad of colors for public consumption and use. While Sherman Davies and hi1hi1hi1hi1 tackled the most popular characters from both Universes. These men formed a brotherhood of sorts by which they could bounce ideas off each other, offer advice and feedback, and generally just enjoy the game we love. (Writer’s Note – I am quite positive that someone of importance is being left out, but unfortunately I was not present at this time. I have just been able to glean most of this info by sifting through the Customs Threads for Marvelscape. It is not my intention to slight anyone. In the event I have slighted you, please accept my sincere apologies along with a heartfelt Thank You for laying the groundwork around here.)

Eventually, someone noticed that, although there was brilliant work and collaboration going on, there was no real way to know which Wolverine to play or which Batman, nor to know if they were really fair to be played with the original Marvel figures and cards. It’s at this time that someone introduced the TNT (Tried N True) process to Comics Customs. TNT was pioneered in the traditional customs forum and basically provided a means to work out issues and playtest customs. Only nine designs ever made it all the way through this process and received the stamp of approval. Before too long, an alternate was introduced, NM24 (No More than 24 hours). It eliminated playtesting for the means of expediting the process. It focused on wording, point, and stat tweaks to get something approved. The problems with this method were that a) it was all theoryscaping, b) the randomness of those involved kept the approved customs from being looked at in reference to new customs, and c) there was no quality control here, meaning that the same mechanics and power might have two different names. After a few years of this, a couple of very involved customizers began to PM back and forth about their dissatisfaction with the process. From these PMs sprung the original concepts and ideas which would eventually lead to the birth of C3G (Comic Custom Creators Guild).

VC
This week, we bring you Kantono Daishi from SoV.
Kantono Daishi can activate either 1 Ninja squad or 2 Ninja heroes after taking a turn using his Dishonorable Leadership special power. He can use his Phantom Walk special power to avoid leaving engagement attacks and his Counter Strike special power allows him to cause damage via extra shields. Add 5 defense and 6 move to this and you have a nice leader unit for the ninjas.

HoSS
This week, we bring you news upon the newest release scheduled for HoSS! As the newest set from HoSS is nearing completion, a map contest was held to decide which maps would be included in the set. All six maps did a wonderful job in portraying the locations requested and everyone who submitted a map has received +1 HoSS Reward Points for their efforts. Check out this post to see all of the maps together and feel free to comment upon them in this thread.

Custom of the Week
Of all the figures possible in Heroscape, the Aquilla flagbearer is one of the most popular. One version of this figure is the dwarven flagbearer, Dorrund Greatstone, created by Scytale.
Dorrund offers a +1 defense to all adjacent allies with his Defensive Aura 1. He can also allow allies who follow Aquilla within six spaces to ignore leaving engagement attacks with his Tactical Freedom Aura special power. Overall, this figure fits in perfectly with the previous flagbearers given Aquilla the figure she's needed.

Map of the Week
This week we bring you a different side of the Maps & Scenarios forum.
DanieLoche's Millennium Falcon is a well designed map thrown together with: 1 Marvel Set, 2 FotA, 2 RotV (water only: 42 hexes).
Though the inside of the ship is small, the cartographer DanieLoche seems to have nailed the concept with such little terrain and with all of the windy hallways and dead-ends included. You can check out more of DanieLoche's Star Wars maps and others by visiting this thread. You can also download the Millennium Falcon by clicking here.

Custom SuperScape Creation
This week we bring you the Rhino from Grishnak.
The Rhino can Charge at his opponents from a distance, causing increased damage to his target. Being Indestructible, he can add an automatic shield when defending against an attack. Just watch out, being Dimwitted, you can only give him so many orders a round.

Editor's note
Sorry for the long delay, but we at Week@HSers are working to bring this back to a weekly release .

What, no dice power on the flag bearer? Lame… (just kidding--the disengage aura is a really cool idea)

Matt Helm is one who definitely deserves some recognition for being one of the all-timers.

I wasn't around at that time either, but I believe that the guy you have a feeling you left out of the History of C3G thing was Matt Helm.

Yes, my pal Matt Helm was definitely there at the start, and I am also one of the 'forgotten customizers' from the early days of C3G - in fact, I was a founding member of the group!

The beginning of C3G is Chapter 2. (Patience my young padawans.) I sincerely hope that everything moving forward is historically accurate as I was present and active for all that. (I have not forgotten my old pals MattHelm or Garada, they just have yet to enter the C3G picture.) But both were left out of the Pre-C3G era unintentionally yes. Mea culpa.
