Well met! . . . or Not (and a few other issues)

Posted December 14th, 2009 at 03:15 PM by kolakoski
Well met!

A poll in the forums on such a personal issue seems to me to be out of place in the general forum, so I'll put it to you all here: Is my salutation offensive to a significant portion of the community, or merely to a few (one)?

"Suspension of disbelief" is a term usually applied to fiction, but I find it appropriate for games too, specifically Heroscape. Licensed characters break this for me as I "know" they are fictional. Generic units similar to licensed ones, for example, a generic Dwarven hero as opposed to the LotR one, do not. As I am ignorant concerning D&D characters, their inclusion does not break it. Thus, I am generally against licensing units in Heroscape.

There seems to be some concern about the level of discourse in the forums or the current state of the game, particularly as they relate to "Old Timers" versus "Noobs". It is one thing to gripe about standards of behavior not being maintained, or the game evolving in ways that are disappointing to you. It is another to quit participating in the forums, or the game, as a result. The former happens as a result of a lack of understanding concerning the nature of people and communication among them (IMHO, of course). The latter is a shame, akin to throwing the baby out with the bathwater (again IMHO).

By the way, my 3 weeks at Blue Cave Castle in Negril, Jamaica were wonderful. Re-entry is hard.

I don't see how starting a post with "Well Met!" could ever be perceived as insulting or offensive. I know that I don't mind it at all. I also think that the title was more or less a joke, not any attempt to be mean or anything.

Hmmm, your next point....I am not sure on that one. I do kind of like the generic-ness of units in Heroscape, but I am not sure that I would be opposed to more specific/licensed units in the game. I would certainly be opposed to them only doing specific/non generic units in the future, though. That would just break kind of the flavor of the game.

And with the next point, I definitely agree. A few people are blowing things a little bit out of proportion, most notably the "Heroscape is dead OMGOMG!" kind of person.

Well met!

The salutation is not an issue at all. It's your thing, just like supporting Runa is mine. I also think the title is meant to be funny. I chuckled the first time I read it, but not in a "laughing at you" sort of way.

My title spawned from my GenCon 08 Battle Report, where I mentioned that R˙chean called me a beast. I think that was meant to be funny too, as most of the titles around here are.

Well met!

"Well met!" is a greeting used in many fantasy/medieval novels I have read. I didn't know it was used by Salvatore's Drow hero, but I believe its used in LotR. Consider yourselves lucky that I don't do long form variations like "Well and truly met" or even more flowery greetings I have seen in print. (I am a voracious reader.)

I have had the opportunity to meet ya and you are a really cool guy and not once did you say it in person

The "Well Met" thing is a little played out though only because you use it for everything so it kind of loses it's lustre. Although it is nowhere near as annoying as typing in all red like some people do.

Perhaps using it sparingly will allow you to still "be you" without incurring the wrath of those that are annoyed by it.

I really don't care either way. I use the first person pronoun all the time in writing, even though my 9th grade English teacher told me not to.

I think it bugged me a bit when you first started posting, but by now it's just your thing. I think you should keep it.

I agree about generic characters being better. However, once any character is Scape-ized, he's no longer who he was, but a Scape piece, as the better customs are. So with a figure translated into our game well, its a moot point.

I don't care one way or the other about the greeting.

I'm fine with licensed scape to a degree, but I wouldn't want to see only licensed figures in the future, especially as that would mean the loss of the soulborg storyline, which is my favorite in HeroScape. Also, we would lose Marro, Kyrie, and anything else that is pretty much exclusively HS.

I hate text speak. I can't even bring myself to do it in an actual text message, unless I'm running out of room to get my point across and need to make more space, and even then it makes me feel unclean. I have absolutely no problem with some of the harsher methods of discouraging text speak and other poor forum behavior, though I do think the nicer methods are better.
