The Roman Army . . . Not Today

Posted July 21st, 2009 at 12:00 PM by kolakoski
Well met!

See previous blog entry.

I give up. The Islandscape (GenCon Main Event) format does not permit me to create the kind of Roman army i desire. Therefore, I am going with the following:

150 2 x 10th
120 Kaemon
100 Krav
80 Kumiko (I insist)
50 Marro Warriors
500

575: add 1 x 10th; 600: add Raelin v1 & Marcu; 640: add Krug & Marcu.

The Roman Army Today

Well met!

RoninValentina posted recently, asking for help constructing his Main Event GenCon Roman army. Coincidentally, I am entering Islandscape, with its Main Event format, with just such an army. There seems to be a Consensus about certain things, but most issues are subtler and more subjective.

1. Take Marcus. The Romans are very slow. Marcus gives all soldiers +1 movement. Romans are soldiers, which brings us to . . .

2. Be a soldier. AE, 4th Mass., and 10th Reg. are soldiers and thus staples in Roman armies.

3. Take Raelin. Consensus might make this number 2. Roman armies clump.

4. Take Me-Burq-Sa over Ne-Gok-Sa. In a 500 point army, you need the 40 extra points. and MBS is great as the Fifth Attacker.

So the core of a 500 point Roman army is some combination of Marcus, MBS and 2 (or 3) squads of Romans, depending on what units you want in the 200-300 points remaining.

I believe Consensus...

Going to My First Tourney!

Posted July 13th, 2009 at 10:15 AM by kolakoski
Well met!

On this Friday just passed, Chas and I began preparing our friend, Ken, for Islandscape '09, by playing on re-creations of GenCon maps. I had thought that I would be unable to attend, due to the proximity of my 19th wedding anniversary. However, as it turns out, we will be celebrating during the first weekend in August, so I am free to attend. I am looking forward to meeting some fine people I know only from their posts, in particular Onacara, who offered me a crash site in his hotel room when it appeared I might be able to go to the tourney in Provincetown, not too long ago.

I apologize for my technophobia. I have still not tackled the task of uploading pictures from our digital camera for my battle reports.

Looking forward . . .

Tomorrow Night's Extravaganza - Hold the Fort Morale Buster

Well met!

The battlefield is the same (see previous blog entry). However, this time power creep is represented by the point total (850). Victory conditions are control of the Courtyard after [?] turns or breaking the opposing army (killing 425 points).

The various armies I considered contained the following units.

Braxas
Q-10
Mimring
Kaemon
Krug
Raelin v2
Airborne Elite
Kozuke
Marcus
Tornak
Me-Burq-Sa
Marro Warriors
Marcu Isamu
Blade Gruts
Romans

I am, at the moment, fielding the following, but am opening the floor to suggestions. (I have other units, but these are my core preferences.)

[210 Braxas
150 Mimring
120 Krug
100 Kozuke
100 Tornak
80 2 x Blades
80 2 x Arrows
10 Isamu
850]

It is Wednsday morning, and I am tweaking. Took out Braxas, Tornak and Isamu. Put in Q-10, Grimnak...

Last Night's Action

Posted June 11th, 2009 at 10:45 AM by kolakoski
Well met!

Once again, Chas and I are met at his residential gaming monastary. Although I had been given a brief description in advance, I was totally unprepared for the splendor as I approached the Table of Chas (He Who Owns All of Heroscape).

A long, rectangular courtyard was laid out before me, surrounded by a sparsely rocky forest. Within were two spacious areas. The first, on my left, contained a high double-spaced column, and numerous ruins. The second, on my left, had the as yet unknown glyph centered on an island in a large pool.

We fought three battles this night. I shall tell you what little I remember, but most is shrouded in a blur of blood. Hopefully Chas will chime in with any salient details I may have missed.

In the first game I had the following against Chas's Guard army:

150 Mimring
100 Syvarris
100 Marcus
100 2 x Romans
40 Theracus
30 Eldgrim
10 Isamu
530...
